Can't relaunch CharGen

Feb 25, 2009 16:47:54 The Character Generator won't relaunch after it's been run once. Here's what happens:

1. Boot computer.
2. Launch CharGen (no problem)
3. Close CharGen
4. Relaunch CharGen again later (hangs)

The program appears to start, a button is placed on the Start bar, but nothing else happens. Task Manager shows the following:

Task: Dungeons and Dragons Insider: Updater
Status: Running

No problems there. When I click the application's button on the Start bar, the mouse freezes, but it becomes functional again after a minute or so. No CharGen window appears.

I run WinXP SP2. I've uninstalled/cleaned and reinstalled once. Didn't change anything. This happening to anyone else? It's a pain to have to reboot just to launch this thing...

Feb 25, 2009 23:09:33 Did you perchance save an invalid character? I had a similar problem when I selected a power to lose for the Novice Power feat but did not select a power to replace it with and then saved the character. I could not get the thing to work until I wiped out all of my Character Builder files and re-installed from scratch. In hindsight, I am wondering whether deleting the bad saved character file would have done the trick?

Feb 26, 2009 17:03:14 You might try looking in the process lists for the associated processes and kill those too. Easiest way is to right click on the program under applications in task manager and chose go to process. Before you kill it, try sorting them by name by clicking the image name heading at the top of the list. See if there are any other processes that look related.

On my vista machine, launching the shortcut started the RealCharacterBuilderUpdater.exe process. After that it just launches CharacterBuilder.exe. So I would look for either of those processes and make sure they have been killed off and then try again.

Feb 26, 2009 21:51:25 Finally discovered the issue. The Character Creator doesn't like Civilization (and perhaps other games/apps) being run concurrently. I can run various productivity apps, browsers, etc, but it doesn't like sharing the computer with games, apparently.
