| #1nightshade1Nov 01, 2010 23:27:57 | You see what happens when you lie to the customers? Can you feel it yet? Can you feel the money slip through your fingers as people are demanding refunds and cancelling DDI subscriptions left and right? When will enough be enough? Perhaps if you kept your word on keeping your products a good value and up to date, this could be avoided. The longer you treat us like mushrooms by keeping us in the dark and feeding us (snip), the more people will simply walk away from you and your products. Remember, what starts with DDI will eventually turn to your books and other accessories. That is how D&D will die. Not because people got tired of the game - but because people got tired of the lies and the horrible customer service. It won't be us that fails D&D - it will be you. I always feared what the world would be like without D&D to play. It looks like my fears may yet come to pass. Sleep well WotC. |

| #8GazraNov 02, 2010 0:57:33 | Wow, you're like those Anonymous Scientology videos, except you'll follow through on your threats even less than they did. They're late on their updates and are giving full refunds for those months while giving you the magazines for free. They've told us as much as they can about why the updates are late and why they aren't allowed to say any more than they have. Now you can be a good boy and wait it out with the rest of us, or you can act like a child and make empty threats. Either way, D&D will still be here, the Character Builder will be updated when it's possible, and you'll still be giving WotC money. TL;DR: WotC doesn't need you to tell them they need to update the CB, and the rest of us don't need you to act like the D&D end-times messiah who will shelter us through these dark times. |

| #10RedSiegfriedNov 02, 2010 1:59:50 | Something is in the works for 11/2 according to Paolo. No precise info but Compendium will be down tomorrow morning for (hopefully) a short time for server upgrades (7-8am PST estimated, I trust that even with the update he described they can pull that off quickly) and then there were hints that it might be a good idea to check back here sometime tomorrow morning around 10am PST. So something's going to happen, but we don't know what yet. I'll wait with great anticipation. Just be patient isn't ringing quite as hollow with me at this point, but I'm sure eager to see exactly what's going to happen and my decision on whether I renew or not in a couple of weeks is going to be based in some part on what happens tomorrow. |

| #15DungeoneeringNov 02, 2010 6:20:43 | The 'server upgrades' refer to moving to a new version of the database. I don't think they're rolling out their cloud-based virtual tabletop quite yet. The OP was a bit melodramatic, but practically speaking yes, this is what will happen if WotC continues to fall behind. Most people don't like paying money for nothing. I would be very surprised if WotC wasn't losing customers and that trend will accellerate the longer this drags on. That said, D&D is too powerful a brand not to exist and I am sure word of its demise is, as always, greatly exaggerated. |
| #16Dane_McArdyNov 02, 2010 6:30:11 | You see what happens when you lie to the customers? Can you feel it yet? Can you feel the money slip through your fingers as people are demanding refunds and cancelling DDI subscriptions left and right? I'm gonna send them lil Billy's college fund. |
| #17mrmythNov 02, 2010 8:16:16 | And the award for 'Egregious Overreaction In A Forum Post' goes to ... "This is how D&D will die" isn't an overreaction? Man, this is absolutely a crappy situation, but his post goes waaay past that. "This is how D&D will die - not with a bang, but with a post fueled by nerd-rage on the internets." |
| #18Style75Nov 02, 2010 8:33:31 | D&D can only die when WotC sends their ninjas to take all of my old books, just as was predicted when Essentials was released. Anyone else hear Phill Collins singing while they read the OP ? |
| #19The_JesterNov 02, 2010 8:44:19 | You see what happens when you lie to the customers? Can you feel it yet? Can you feel the money slip through your fingers as people are demanding refunds and cancelling DDI subscriptions left and right? 1) They're not suffering. DDI numbers are still going up. 2) We have no evidence sales of physical books are suffering. The books continue to rate high on Amazon. 3) Just because people are dissatisfied with DDI and cancelling that does not mean they'll stop buying books. Most players of D&D are not DDI subscribers. 4) The world with never be without D&D. Even if WotC dies and Hasbro doesn't re-assign the brand name there's Pathfinder, which IS D&D with a new name. |

| #23RedSiegfriedNov 02, 2010 12:45:59 | Good news. There will be an update soon for CB, though it's going to be online. Not sure how I feel about that yet but I'm glad there's going to be an update in a couple of weeks. So for those who said there wouldn't be an update today, you're right! But at least we know now, and that's good enough for me. I'll be renewing my subscription soon. |
| #24nightshade1Nov 02, 2010 19:54:51 | Wow, you're like those Anonymous Scientology videos, except you'll follow through on your threats even less than they did. Either way, D&D will still be here, the Character Builder will be updated when it's possible, and you'll still be giving WotC money. No I don't think so. As it was announced, there is a new CB coming on the 16th. According to the reports it will be all online. So now, I wouldn't even be able to control my own files? They will be housed on someone else's server? Hmmm...so in order to access my own character, I'm now going to pay a monthly fee. Hmmm....sounds very World of Warcraft like to me. What's next? Are you going to charge us little fees if we want to change the name of our character, or their race perhaps? You couldn't make a stand alone program work properly, and yet you expect us to believe you are going to make a living online program function, which tends to be alot more difficult? The lies thicken and twist...careful WotC they are starting to look more and more like a noose. Is that the grave bell I hear ringing? It rings for thee....Rest in pieces..... |
| #25nightshade1Nov 02, 2010 20:04:49 | This thread made me laugh! I'm glad you found this amusing... What's comical here is that you seem to have enjoyed the fact that products and services that we pay for and that were promised are not being delivered as promised. "You know, history is a passion for me and in Ancient Egypt if you're speaking under oath, you will require to say 'If I'm lying , take me to the quarries'. That mean anything to you ? " - John Kramer, to a very naughty liar, Saw 3D. |
| #30AaronOfBarbariaNov 02, 2010 22:57:14 | So if you buy a product online, and it is supposed to be delivered on November 2...how long would YOU wait before asking wtf? See, everyone keeps forgetting (or intentionally ignoring) that there is more to the DDi subscription than just the character builder. I see a lot of people going "oh my god, no update?! I want all of my money back for this month!" and WotC providing a refund no questions asked. I then see people complain that the service "sucks." To adapt this to your example I would have to say I bought a product online that was supposed to be delivered on November 2, and all but one piece showed up - a piece that isn't actually all that important because it is just added convenience. The service being sold is one of convenience, and it isn't my (or wizards of the coast's) fault that people have grown impatient and irrational and are treating it as if they are missing a service of necessity. Anecdote for the sake of anecdote: I have 3 friends that are DDi subscribers in my group, and not one of them has posted anywhere on this forum expressing any "wtf?" because they have patience - and also pencils and paper, which seems like something we have been taking for granted based on some posts I have seen recently. When I specifically talked with them about the delays they said "I don't even care - it's not like writing down a character for a few months is hard." |
| #31NyarlathotepNov 02, 2010 23:02:48 |
And people like you keep assuming that the reason people are upset is that they can't use pencil and paper. Forgetting (or intentionally ignoring) the fact that if one is having to do so, then there is no need to pay WOTC for a character builder. |
| #32Alter_BoyNov 02, 2010 23:13:32 | Hmmm...so in order to access my own character, I'm now going to pay a monthly fee. Hmmm....sounds very World of Warcraft like to me. Store clerk: "That'll be 80 cents for that notebook you'll use for your D&D character." OP: "Hmmm... so in order to access my own character, I have to pay money for it." Store clerk: "Yeah, that's how it works. Do you want it or not?" OP: "Hmmm... sounds very World of Warcraft like to me." Store clerk: "Are you okay?" Is that the grave bell I hear ringing? You should get that ringing in your ears checked out. |
| #33AaronOfBarbariaNov 02, 2010 23:28:06 |
Again, you aren't paying for a character builder you are paying for a number of different things, which happens to include a character builder for your convenience. Do a lot of people feel they are paying for the character builder? sure. Just like some people order fish & chips because they wanted some chips. |
| #34NyarlathotepNov 02, 2010 23:38:24 |
And if you are buying fish & chips solely because you like the chips, then the only thing that matters is the quality of the chips. The fish means nothing in that case and telling that person "Hey, the chips may be cold and soggy, but the fish is great." is kind of pointless. It wastes your time and annoys them. Lots of us bother subscribing to DDI solely because of the CB. So responding to complaints about the CB by appealing to the rest of the package is equally pointless and annoying. |
| #35dbmeboyNov 02, 2010 23:41:30 |
And then they just get fish and are justifiably unhappy. There, I finished your illustration for you. It doesn't really matter if the problem is with part of the "order" or the entire thing, it's still a problem. |
| #36AaronOfBarbariaNov 02, 2010 23:46:29 |
Waiter: "Here's your fish... chips are running late, sorry about that. I'll bring them out when they are done." Customer: "I don't want any fish! Go get my chips!" Waiter: "...then why did you order the fish & chips?" It's all I can think of every time I see someone throw a fit about the character builder being late and how that's "all they are paying for." You might think it is, you might even want it to be... but it just plain isn't. And just like a restaurant might say "sorry, we only do fish & chips - you want just the one, you have to buy both," WotC provided very clear terms as to what the subscription cost covers... and yet people will claim it is something other than what it is. |
| #37drowbattlemindNov 02, 2010 23:47:23 |
NO! Perhaps *YOU* paid into a DDI subscription of more than just the CB, but as for me, I couldn't give two flying figs about what has become of Dragon Magazine and Dungeon since WotC took them away from Paizo and rendered them down to PDF's that are becoming less and less useful per issue. *I* subscribed for the Character Builder, plain and simple. QUIT CLAIMING TO SPEAK FOR ME AND EVERYONE ELSE. You are NOT me, and you don't know why I did something until AFTER I tell you. CUT IT OUT. |
| #38dbmeboyNov 02, 2010 23:49:40 |
Followed by: Waiter: "Here are your chips now." Customer: "These chips are not as good as the chips you've had in the past, the chips advertised on the website (the main page still advertises the "classic cb"), or the chips you told us were coming." Waiter: "We're upgrading!" |
| #39NyarlathotepNov 02, 2010 23:53:26 |
And if there were a way to only buy the tools we want and not pay for the rest, I am sure that those of us who don't give a rat's hind end about the rest of the package would do so. But there isn't. So, surprise, we are going to complain about problems with the parts we use and telling people that they shouldn't complain because the rest of the package is just fine (to you) fine doesn't work. |
| #40lord_rockNov 02, 2010 23:53:59 | I know what I'm paying for... I can't order "just chips" at this point and even if I could I don't know if I would. Right now the fish is starting to get a little old and stinky and the chips that I actually do want only come plain with no salt or vinegar. Nope, can't even bring my own salt and vinegar... And they told me it would be ready 3 hours ago. Sure they comped the check but they still didn't bring me my chips and that was the whole reason I came in today. And they told me the next people who order chips get them right away... if they eat all thier vegetables first... only sit at one specific table... buy each chip individually and have to pay the same amount of $ for chips every 10 minutes that they want to use them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now that we're done with that... this is disheartening. People have the right to be angry just like you have the right to be angry at people who are angry. I'm angry but have decided this isn't a battle worth fighting online. Poor form WOTC's, again. Not that you care or anything. |
| #41nightshade1Nov 02, 2010 23:54:08 | So if you buy a product online, and it is supposed to be delivered on November 2...how long would YOU wait before asking wtf? When you buy a product you are expected to get the entire product. If I go to a restuarant and order a steak dinner platter that comes with a steak, mash potatoes, a salad and a drink, and they bring everything except my salad - i'm not going to sit back and say well 3 out of 4 isn't bad. I will have them bring my salad which I paid for. I don't care what their excuses are, if it's advertised as part of the package deal, it better be there. |

| #43NyarlathotepNov 03, 2010 0:00:14 |
Actually the conversation at the WOTC fish and chips shop goes like this. Waiter: "Here's your fish!" Customer: "Hey, I paid for fish AND chips. Where are the chips?" Waiter: (stares blankly) Customer: "Hello? Chips?" Waiter: "..." Customer: "Am I even getting chips? Are they still in the fryer? Where are my Chips? They're the main reason I come here." Waiter: "Enjoy your fish." Customer: "Yeah but what about the Chips?" Waiter: "Soon" (45 minutes pass, finally the waiter delivers a tiny bag of stale Doritos) Waiter: "Here are your chips!" Customer: "Okay, that's it. I'm out of here" Aaron of Barbaria: "I don't see what he's compaining about, the fish is great!" |
| #44MockNov 03, 2010 0:01:22 | That has to be the best analogy so far. I laughed. |
| #45dbmeboyNov 03, 2010 0:03:27 | Yep, Nyarlathotep just showed up my meager analogy skills. Well done. ![]() |
| #46drowbattlemindNov 03, 2010 0:06:54 | As Conan would say "To Arallu with your 'Terms of Use'!" Even IF they deny it in the EULA, they have repeatedly come onto the site and promised updates at times X, Y, and Z. Screw the EULA, we want them to give us THE SERVICES they promised, otherwise THEY HAVE NOT EARNED OUR MONEY. It is MY money, not theirs, and if they want it, they must prove to my satisfaction their services have warrented it. |

But would you care to explain why almost two year old content is still missing? (Hint: Paolo won't explain). It's like the waiter saying: "Well, technically, we only serve food, technically are not bound to serve the food on a plate of some sort". |
| #48arobichaNov 03, 2010 0:46:23 |
I'll agree that a service that touts itself as an online companion should get all the content, and I really have no idea why some content from 2 years ago hasn't popped up yet, but if you'll entertain it I'll hazard a guess... Say you've got 2 restaurants owned by the same person: One of them buys new and interesting ingredients to make new and exciting recipes that they boast every week called "PrintPlay", but the menu doesn't "exist" per say. Let's say the other takes the most successful dishes and offers them in a very customer friendly environment. (Call it... uh... "OnlinePlay" ... Points for effort?) Say until a point, all the dishes are so successful that they all make it to "OnlinePlay". Then say a week served a dish called (oh I don't know...) "Monster Mash-ed Potatoes" (a lack-luster halloween themed performance) at the same time as "Faerunian Un-death by Chocolate Cake", "Faerunian Strawberry Gelatinous Cube", and the "Faerunian Orc Cheese Platter" - all of which were relatively huge hits that people eat all the time. The "Faerunian" dishes all hit the top of the "add to the menu at OnlinePlay", and "Monster Mash-ed Potatoes" takes a back seat while "OP" gets their stuff together for the top sellers. Then 1 month later, "Dark (Chocolate) Sun-dae" hits the menu, and there's a huge outcry for more - "Monster Mash-ed Potatoes" takes another back seat to the Dark Sundae, when "Essentialy Salt" comes out (Kids love it) - same deal. I could see "Monster Mash-ed Potatoes" taking an indefinite back seat this way. Pure, delicious, (joking) speculation... Also, if you're ever in Ottawa, Canada - "Play" and "Taylors" are the model I based this off of... They make amazing food. Now if you'll excuse me, I've developed a small case of the munchies. |

| #50arobichaNov 03, 2010 0:53:56 | Oh my. I think we have drawn these analogies too far, I have trouble following them tl;dr - Big, important things like monsters, items and the like from campaign settings and hardcover books trump the stuff nobody uses from things that generate no real revenue. Edit: ... Thinking back on the last update... hmm... Well this is the only one that makes sense to ME. Like I said, the circumstances are likely not what I described. |
| #51cathakNov 03, 2010 0:56:43 | Oh my. I think we have drawn these analogies too far, I have trouble following them Thanks. ![]() There's probably some truth to what you say. I just think that since there is already an interface in Character Builder for mounts then adding mounts from Eberron, Adventurer's Vault or Draconomicon or some of the other books would not be too time consuming or difficult. |

| #53mudbunnyNov 03, 2010 21:46:53 | Really? You don't think WotC is feeling this? Have you even READ the forum pages, there are dozens upon dozens upon DOZENS of people telling WoTC what they can do with their lousy service! I've actually lost count with the number of people in these forums that have said "Screw you WotC, I'm cancelling my accounts" People need to be careful when taking the posts on a forum and attempting to extrapoplate them over a much larger population. A forum population rarely, if ever, is indicative of the population as a whole. See when 4E was announced as a prime example. Another example was when DDI went to subscription from free. In both cases there were countless posts and page upon page of people saying things that mirror what is being said now about the CB change. In both of those cases, the general opinion of the forums were wrong. Now, that is not to say that WotC won't lose subscriptions over this, because they will. However, what we can only guess at (and what WotC can more accurately predict) is the number of subscrioptions that they will get due to this change, as well as the nhumber of people who will change from an occasional subscription to a full-time subscription. Then, one must also take into account that, the tools now being web-based, the ease that eventual integration of the tools will have and the advantages that could possibly come from that. |

| #56ArtifactNov 04, 2010 14:00:13 | My D&DI subscription expires early next year. I don't plan to support a web-based, online only CB. Where I live, the connection isn't always on, not always available. Such a CB will be of less use for me; I use the current CB offline a great deal however. I'm not mad, just disappointed. The CB is a wonderful tool. I like it-- a lot. I still plan to support D&D (Insider just won't be a part of it). I enjoy the game, I think WotC puts out some good stuff, so why not? I doubt I'm alone. There no doubt others who will cancel their DDI sub yet continue to buy D&D hardcovers (or whatever). As is often the case I believe, things have a way of balancing out. It just looks really bad on the 'net ;). /\ Art |
