Canceling DDI on October 12th.

Oct 09, 2010 14:36:11 I am going to get the meager updates for CB which is my primary reason for DDi, and then I am cancelilng DDi. No sense in re-iterating what everyone else is voicing which is the feeling of rip-offedness from not having Dark Sun in the CB yet. I will only say that the sole reason for me canceling my subscription is because Dark Sun is still not in the CB yet, and we are not told when it will be.

I just want to comment on one more thing. Anyone commenting that the EULA does not legally guarantee that the CB will be updated with new information from WotC products is missing the point entirely. There is a difference between the legal obligation of a company, and an obligation a company has in meeting reasonable expectations of their customers.

A company meeting it's legal obligations is a necessary obligation. It does not mean it is a sufficient obligation. The legal requirement is one key, essential requirement in customer satisfaction. It is not the only one.

When other major Campaign Settings have been updated in a timely manner (Forgotten Realms/ Eberron), those of us that bought the Dark Sun Campaign Setting and have DDi expected it to be updated in a reasonable time period. Obviously, we have had this expectation dashed. Regardless of the reasons, good or bad, this must be considered a failure of the company.

Hopefully, WotC will realize that it is much better to set expectations low and then exceed them rather then setting expectations high and failing.

They didn't fully inform the public about what was going on, and so people were allowed to speculate.. and speculation always goes to extremes. On one hand, you have people who believed the whole thing would fail and the entire company would go under and crash and burn in fires of burning fire. On the other hand, you had people whom believed this would be the dawning of a new age: a revolution of tabletop gaming that would be shouted from the mountaintops.

What we have is something less extraordinary. We have the same subpar products that Wizards always seems to produce, when it's not a main line. They have a longer track record of failures than successes, but when they succeed, they exceed. In this case, they have failed to meet their obligations entirely. EULA or not, the community will judge not on legal grounds, but on ethical grounds. Ethically, they have not produced what they said they will produce, and they have not upheld a unified standard.

This isn't a high expectation. This is just.. an expectation. Most companies should be held to these standards.

This is precisely the point IMHO. I have used the CB for two years and throughout that time I have bought D&D books every month, waited for a short time (2-3 weeks) and downloaded the CB update so I can incorporate the new features in said books in characters I am creating. Now, I have owned the three Dark Sun books for the best part of two months and I have no electronic support for them whatsoever. I could revert to PnP character generation if I wanted to but having done without that for two years thanks to the CB, I don't see why I should have to.

When I bought the DS books, I fully expected to only have to wait 2-3 weeks before I could use the new feats, themes, powers etc. in the CB. Now it seems I will have to wait the best part of 3 months (assuming the DS update happens in November) before I can use the books I've bought in the CB. The update schedule may not be a legal requirement but it is certainly an expectation and had I known the September update would not happen it may have affected the book purchases I made.

As I have posted elsewhere, this is why I have sought (and got) a second refund in October. Not for any legal reasons but because I feel let down, having paid good money for books that currently I am not using.

I just renewed, so I might as well wait until it expires 11/9.

Im sure by then the CB update will be up.

I'd be willing to take that bet. If a CB update with Dark Sun and Essentials has been released by the 9th of November, you win. Otherwise, I win.

Loser has to sport an avatar of the winner's choice (nothing that breaks the rules of the board, natch) for a week.
