Error 1317.An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Documents and Setting\Mikael\MyDocuments\MyPictures

Sorry, but I already had a look through that thread. Nothing similar there.

I pulled out the MSI file and tried to install it manually. Same error message. So I started up a copy of Orca and began to modify the MSI database.

It seems it fails on the step when its trying to create the ddi\Character Portraits folder under My Pictures. For some reason the installer wants to create the My Pictures folder also, even though it exists. When I changed the parent of Character Portraits to InstallDir, I got it to install. Then I just moved the folder over to My Pictures\ddi\Character Portraits. Very simple.

There's something strange in that MSI database, but I can't see what it is. It shouldn't try to create a folder that already exists. Maybe it gets confused because My Documents is not under C:\ ?

Time to start playing with this program.

Since there is no error number or error screen, here's a description of what's happening:

I get through the installation seemingly without issue. Then, when I click on the shortcut icon that appears on my desktop, I get the "Character Builder" splash screen. It goes away and another window appears, but it never finishes loading. I would see the title bar of the window and the section of the opening window that gave me the links to send in bugs and get to this message board, but none of the other "buttons" would appear and the program would freeze in this position.

I tried redownloading the installer file several times to different locations on my computer and when I downloaded it this morning, it seemed to be a different install. After this new install, I get the new "Character Builder" splash screen (without the "beta" seal). The splash goes away and another window appears to load, but this time, not even the title bar shows up.

I am running Windows Vista Home (32bit) on an Intel Pentium dual-core 1.6 Ghz processor with 1GB of DDR2 Ram. I've got plenty of hard drive space for this software.

I should point out, that I have another system that is very similar to this one with almost identical software loaded and I got it to install just fine on the other machine. I've tried quitting every other piece of software loaded on this machine, but it still will not load the software on this machine.

Any pointers?

Then do the clean install?

You don't need to download the install from our web page any more, just remove everything then run it.

Jan 26, 2009 15:08:23 After you do the remove, you might wanna install 3.5 framework manually from Microsoft before you install, i had a problem where it wouldn't install it from the character builder program on a couple of computers.

Jan 27, 2009 13:49:37 Cute. The released version has the exact same installation bug as I described in my OP. Why not fix bugs that get reported from the beta. Isn't that kind of the idea with a beta release?

I'm not sure I can be bothered with fixing the MSI database for you again. I seem to remember paying for this...

Since I read your reply, I have tried uninstalling all install of .Net, rebooting, installing directly from Microsoft, rebooting, installing the CB, rebooting again, then trying to run the program. I have tried every combination of those things listed above and am constantly getting the exact same response every time.

I have posted the technical details of my install in the new post requesting this data. It's frustrating because I have gotten the program to install and run correctly on another machine running almost identical software and can find nothing that might cause these errors.

I will gladly try any other solutions that anyone else might have.
