It is, as suspected, a web enhanced GUI, using a program (Silverlight, which you can get the info about when you right click and select) that is front-loaded onto your computer. (Win7 already had it, I think, it didn't ask for it when I first got in) The menu is simplistic, and though that may be a feature for some it seems to lack something in the process. Having the roles be chosen at the beginning (without actually listing their names) is frustrating to me, I want to make this or that and the roles are secondary to a player (or they should be). I like that the "custom" character maker can choose all of them and essentially skip this step. My initial confusion was that there was no other choice at this point, it was choose something or go back. After this, though, you can skip around by clicking on the various steps. Some are grayed out until you choose a class and/or do up your stats. I have to do point buy for now, since you can't choose where to put the array stats. (Or it wasn't obvious for me) The whole presentation seems built to go A.B.C. and done and doesn't seem to be any sort of actual personal feeling for the character, just a "build" for use. I hope that there are more choices in the future other than "quickie essentials," "Custom," and "load" at the start, and have a "generic" character that can use any option instead of having to choose a "setting" to go through. I am not impressed with this first offering and don't see much improvement coming anytime soon. |
