Working on a slayer and tried looking at differnt armor options. Leveling this class to 8, I noticed that if I equip hide armor with a +2 enhancement bonus that I have 24 AC. If I do the same thing with a set of scale mail, you get 24 AC. I dont know how this works since there is clearly a 4 AC differnce between the two.

Anybody know why this is?

Could this be the masterwork armor bug? The last update seemed to have broken AC calculations.

I'm not sure but it doesn't seem right that lighter armor would give me the same AC as a heavy armor.

It's probably due to the fact that hide armor is light, and scale is heavy. In light armor, you'll be adding your DEX to AC, and a slayer's DEX tends to be pretty good.

I was talking to a friend about this and you might be right novacat. I think you take a penalty to DEX for wearing heavy armor. I dunno though.

No you dont take a penalty to Dexterity in Heavy Armor.  Heavy Armor's AC is just what it states it is, it does not take into account your Dexterity or Intelligence ever.  Light Armor's AC does take your Dexterity or Intelligence score into account.

For instance Scale Armor is AC 7 and someone in Leather Armor with a 20 Dexterity or 20 Intelligence will also have an AC of 7 (2 armor + 5 from stat)

I've noticed a similar problem with a couple of Battlemind and Ardent class characters.

It seems like the tool did not think these classes are proficient with this type of armor even though chainmail is listed in the class description, because when I look at armor-related feats there's a feat for hide armor but not a corresponding chainmail feat.

For chainmail for these characters, the AC does work out to 10 + level/2 + enhancement bonus without the armor bonus. If I select hide, however, the armor AC bonus is included.

According to the class description these classes are supposed to be proficient with chain and scale. (battlemind is a defender after all!)

Lack of proficiency for armor will not affect the AC you get when wearing it.  Not being proficient in that armor will only incur a -2 to REF and to attack rolls.

My guess is if the armor bonus works right when you equip Hide, but not Chainmail, that means the Chainmail you're selecting is masterwork of some sort (Forgemail or Spiritmail, for example), which is bugged right now.

Yes, both Battleminds and Ardents should be proficient in Hide and Chain armor so AFAIK, you shouldn't see the feats for armor proficiency for Hide or Chainmail on the feat selection list because you already have them.  When I make up a Battlemind or an Ardent, regular Hide and Chainmail both work normally and they are not red to indicate non-proficiency.

I came to this forum to inquire about this particular topic. Seeing Mock's comment, I tested it out and it does appear that masterwork armor does not get the base AC (that is, leather +2, hide +3) added to the total.

Right - it's broken since the last update.

Take a look at your armor item card.  You'll see it is wrong.

Wow, they really broke AC...  I was messing around with my battlemind for my current campaign and noticed the AC calculations were way off.  Took me a while to figure out what was going on, but I tracked it down to a zeroed armor bonus.

Repro steps:
- Launch Character Builder
- Create Custom -> Home Campaign Character
- Choose Battlemind Class
- Skip to Step 8 and hit marketplace
- Select Drakescale Armor under the "Item" drop down
- Add "Magic Armor +2"
- Return to Inventory and equip the armor
Note: AC only goes up by 2.
- Click Character Sheet and go to page 4
Note: Magic Drakescale armor

  • Armor Bonus:

  • Speed: -1

  • Enhancement: +2 AC

Impressive...  Wonder when this is going to get fixed.

This issue IS listed near the top of the Known Issues list, so CS is aware of it.  Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update.

I found that if you equip standard armor with the bonus you're looking for it will total your AC correctly.  This does only work for AC, I couldn't get it to work with Fort/Ref/Will unfortunately.
