Well, social science, anyway.

Hi, I'm a graduate student in library and information studies, and I'm doing a paper on user acceptance in social informatics (basically the social side of computing).  I've become really interested in the response to the online character builder that was just launched, and I would like to use it as a case study in my paper.  But in order to do that, I need to find out who uses the character builder.

To that end, I've set up a short (16 questions, less than ten minutes) survey.  You can take it here:
www.surveygizmo.com/s3/412615/D-D-Player-Demograpic-Data

I'm not associated with WotC, not making any money off of this, and I couldn't retain or identify your data in any way even if I wanted to.  So please consider helping a fellow geek out.

The survey will remain open until December 5th.

Mods, I know this is probably only tangentally related to this forum's mission.  I'm sorry about that.

Thanks,

Emily

I filled it out, but I do hope you realize the people on this board are almost certainly an unrepresentative sample of D&D players; not to mention a self-selecting one, as far as actually doing the survey is concerned.

Done. You certainly have this social thing down, because I never would have taken some stranger's quiz on a messageboard without it being for SCIENCE!

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your basements, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our character builder, but they'll never take... OUR SCIENCE!

Done.  Though I'm sure you're aware, as someone studying social sciences, that online surveys are wildly inaccurate.

That's one of the limitations of the study.  I had to weigh the problem of getting a lot of D&D fans to take it with the problem of self-selection bias.  We'll have to see how things shake out when all is said and done.

As someone pointed out up-thread, online surveys are/have the potential to be wildly inaccurate.  However, a lot of studies have been done of online communities (or are beginning to be done--I've found at least two papers written about WoW, for example).  Since these communities tend to be pretty geographically diverse, methodologies like online surveys are one way of reaching people.

Anyway I'm tired of reading theory-based papers which never talk to users to find out how they feel.
