Hi, I'm a graduate student in library and information studies, and I'm doing a paper on user acceptance in social informatics (basically the social side of computing). I've become really interested in the response to the online character builder that was just launched, and I would like to use it as a case study in my paper. But in order to do that, I need to find out who uses the character builder. To that end, I've set up a short (16 questions, less than ten minutes) survey. You can take it here: www.surveygizmo.com/s3/412615/D-D-Player-Demograpic-Data |

| #7jeff-heikkinenNov 17, 2010 3:18:38 | I filled it out, but I do hope you realize the people on this board are almost certainly an unrepresentative sample of D&D players; not to mention a self-selecting one, as far as actually doing the survey is concerned. |
| #8GazraNov 17, 2010 3:20:55 | Done. You certainly have this social thing down, because I never would have taken some stranger's quiz on a messageboard without it being for SCIENCE! ![]() |
| #9duck_of_doomNov 17, 2010 3:30:30 | For Pony..... erm and Science |
| #10MockNov 17, 2010 7:07:49 | A fledgling librarian! Excellent. Happy to help. |

| #14cathakNov 17, 2010 9:09:32 | Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your basements, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our character builder, but they'll never take... OUR SCIENCE! |
| #15dracomax1981Nov 17, 2010 9:49:32 | For Science! wait, what are the potentials of this for mad science again? |
| #16malphaeusNov 17, 2010 10:22:08 | Hooray for social science! |

| #19melloredNov 17, 2010 12:02:05 | Make sure to post the results. |
| #20poseidon88Nov 17, 2010 12:17:23 | Done. Though I'm sure you're aware, as someone studying social sciences, that online surveys are wildly inaccurate. |
| #21pzychotisNov 17, 2010 12:25:40 | Done and done. |
| #22knightoftheasterNov 17, 2010 12:39:27 | For the sake of SCIENCE! |

| #24DragonsWrathNov 17, 2010 17:00:31 | *obligatory cheer for Science!* |
| #25quiz_mistressNov 18, 2010 10:53:45 | I filled it out, but I do hope you realize the people on this board are almost certainly an unrepresentative sample of D&D players; not to mention a self-selecting one, as far as actually doing the survey is concerned. That's one of the limitations of the study. I had to weigh the problem of getting a lot of D&D fans to take it with the problem of self-selection bias. We'll have to see how things shake out when all is said and done. As someone pointed out up-thread, online surveys are/have the potential to be wildly inaccurate. However, a lot of studies have been done of online communities (or are beginning to be done--I've found at least two papers written about WoW, for example). Since these communities tend to be pretty geographically diverse, methodologies like online surveys are one way of reaching people. Anyway I'm tired of reading theory-based papers which never talk to users to find out how they feel. ![]() |
