This has already been discussed, but it bears repeating:

WotC, please consider releasing the Character Builder for free.

I consider the Character Builder a basic service for any D&D game. A character sheet is the basic expression of any character. A correct, rules-conform character sheet is a basic element of each and every D&D-game.

To make this service available in the most expensive DDI-package only is extremely customer-unfriendly.

Personally, I don't mind paying a subsription fee for extra services (the magazines and bonus tools), so it wouldn't hurt me if the Character Builder would be included in this package.

But I am very happy to play D&D in different groups in my dining room and I'm not interested in virtualizing the experience.

So why exactly do I have to pay for the Game Table, when the Character Builder is the only service I really need?

IIRC the character bulilder open beta will be free. Once the full version is ready, you can download a demo of it that will let you make a character of levels 1-3.

Once you sign up and download the character maker, its yours, you will be able to use the full version of it when you stop subscriibing to DDi. You just won't be able to get any of the updates for it when you are no longer subscribing. I think thats how it will work.

this is an assumption, i'm not gonna take. like that, one could get updates for the character builder once a year (one month sub), getting almost all options released without having to pay much, and then terminate the subscription again.

odds are:
- maybe wotc will require you to be logged in to ddi to use more than lvl 1-3 and updates. (internet connection mandatory for creation of characters)
+ maybe wotc will not do that. this would allow you to download and use the builder as long as you want. (with the current updates)

option 2 clearly does not involve further profit than 15$ from some people, mostz likely including me. i believe that they are more greedy than that.

My money's on that option.
