| #1rickvigorousAug 09, 2010 9:54:29 | My character builder has developed a new error. It was working yesterday evening. This morning, though, when I try to run it, it crashes. The "looking for update" screen comes up and tells me I'm up to date. When I click "Launch," it crashes. I get the following error message: "Configuration system failed to initialize." It gives me the option to send an error report. If I try to send one, it says it can't connect to the server (b/c the config. system failed to initialize). Whether or not I try to send one, it gives me another error window that vanishes quickly. The new window says "System.ArgumentException: Parameter is not valid" and then continues from there; it's not up long enough for me to transcribe it. It starts with something about System.DrawingFont.getHeight(), but degenerates to seeming gibberish like "↑..☼(Exception.Boolean)." While (Exception.Boolean) makes some sense I suspect there's no function called ↑..☼. I've tried unistalling and reinstalling, as well as repairing the installation. I've also rebooted, which doesn't seem to do anything. The character sheet viewer seems to work fine; it will let me open and view saved characters. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, and as I said before I wasn't having problems yesterday. I haven't installed or removed any other software in the interim. Any thoughts? |
| #2rickvigorousAug 09, 2010 9:57:01 | Also, I've got the Monster Builder; it's still working fine. |
| #3rickvigorousAug 11, 2010 9:47:34 | Bump. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I can add a bit more information. I uninstalled the builder and reinstalled it. It ran, but once I updated it the problem started up again, so I suspect the problem has something to do with the August update. I was able to run the builder with the August update in the past, so I'm not sure exactly what the issue is. Running the program as an adminstrator doesn't fix the problem. I have the .net framework (3.5 SP 1) installed; I deactivated it, reinstalled it, and rebooted before reinstalling the builder, but it didn't seem to make a difference. |
| #4jordanhemlockSep 05, 2010 20:59:35 | I have the same problem. I can run it on a different computer, but all my development machines cannot run character build at all, even after multiple uninstall/reinstall attempts. I start it, and it immediately goes to the crash error dialog: CharacterBuilderUpdater has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. |
| #5LargeGoblinSep 08, 2010 20:45:47 | Still nothing on this? I started getting this error today. I tried to repair the install and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've had no luck. |
| #6neo-otyughSep 14, 2010 20:06:21 | And the same for me. Even the "Send Error Report" button fails just as it did for Rick. This is followed by a window with some gibberish about GetHeight and such. When I re-download, the program works until I apply the update. Then the problem returns. Oddly, it was working fine up until today. It was fine just three days ago. |
| #7duilinSep 25, 2010 15:49:49 | Oh geez.... this does not bode well. I'm having this problem now and was hoping to find a solution here. This thread is 2 months old and still no solution?! Come on..... |
| #8waxman80014Sep 25, 2010 19:59:16 | Do you have the Microsoft .net Framework 4.0 installed. I installed it to my pc that's what broke my Character Bulder and you can't un insall it fully. It works on my notebook and I will be carefull not to insall Microsoft .net Framework 4.0. |
| #9duilinSep 25, 2010 21:28:17 | I don't know if any of you have Sims 3, but after looking at waxman's post I remembered that I did do a patch update on it right before the problems started. So I restored my system back to a couple days and my character builder is now working after I reinstalled. Think back to what you may have updated or installed when the problems started. Something attached to it may be causing these problems. |
| #10dracomax1981Oct 13, 2010 13:57:25 | I am now having this problem too, after finally getting the program installed and updated( I had to uninstall all .net framework, and reinstall 3.5, in order to do THAT. I haven't installed anything, and I haven't purposefully changed anything since this happened. I got the program to open up and work once, and upon trying to reopen it 6 hours later, am here now. |
