Feb 25, 2009 18:57:32 Hi all, I've tried getting Character Builder to work on my Dell laptop with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) installed using Wine and Mono, but so far I've been unsuccessful. Has anyone been able to get it to install under Linux? I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has could share their experiences or maybe point me to a discussion where other people are trying to figure it out... Thanks!

You can use virtual box for linux to get it to work this way.

The problem with the CB being ported is that it uses IE as its base.

Unless I'm mistaken, VirtualBox requires you to actually install Windows (which I don't have). I hadn't heard that the D&D Character Builder uses IE as its base. I had read that it uses the .NET framework, but that's why I installed Mono. It seems crazy to me that World of Warcraft can run on Wine, but the D&D Character Builder can't...

Warcraft doesn't need IE though.
the 3.5 framework it does need as well.

But without IE it wont work

Oh and god help you if IE is corrupt and doesn't work right. You have to reformat to fix it.

Feb 27, 2009 9:09:06 its not IE thats the problem IIRC it's the need of a .net forms handler that's coming in one of the upcoming mono releases.

Jul 13, 2009 0:07:46 Even if it was IE, you would be able to use winetricks to install IE in wine, which would solve that issue. It doesn't for me over on my Mint install.

More on why we cannot have nice things.
