Character Builder stops updating at last second

When I run the updater, it will sit when the installation bar is at full and not do anything. This is after it would crash everytime I clicked the update button, which I fixed by repairing .Net framework. Now it just stops at the very last second. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times. I have tried this on 2 different computers one running Windows 7, the other Vista. It was working perfectly fine when I updated it a few days ago after subscribing to D&DI, but now I'm stuck with just the basic stuff. Can I at the very least just get a copy of the update from August so I can have something that works?

Mine's doing the same. It's been doing it for a few days in fact. I've been trying to figure out a way to fix it, including uninstalling then reinstalling it multiple times, but it's still refusing to update.

I am also having this issue.

Happening to me as well.  Slowly crawling to 100%, then stuck there for 25 minutes.

just fyi, i was having the same issues.
I ended up having to uninstall the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and the Char Builder.
I re-installed the Char Builder, letting it install .NET for me, and everything worked like a charm again.

I can't really do that as I use Windows 7 and it's included in the OS now.

i finally got over this problem by just letting it run overnight. somewhere between 4 and 9 hours after it hit 100% it finished updating.

Of course, now I have other problems....

I'm having this same issue. I've tried reinstalling and everything.

Windows XP. I am definitely 100% sure I have admin rights. Adventure Tools updated and installed 100% fine from a fresh install.

Same problem here. Updated yesterday and CB wouldn't open no matter what - a pity I don't have screens of the error messages. I decided to uninstall CB and download it again, and now I'm having the same problem above :P.

I'm pretty sure this was a corrupted data issue. I was able to fix this on Windows XP by:

1.) Opening Add or Remove Programs and uninstalling Character Builder.

2.) while in Add or Remove programs checking to make sure I have "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1" installed since it is required for Character Builder.

3.) Turning off my virus scanner. (I use AVG. If you don't know how to turn AVG off go here: www.ehow.com/how_5052104_disable-avg-ant... )

4.) Disabling Windows Firewall (if you don't know how to do this go here: windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vist... )

5.) Turning on my DMZ. This is probably overkill but I did this anyway to make sure I don't have any firewall at all messing with the update. Your router's webpage should have a page on how to do this.

6.) Redownloading the .exe from the site.

7.) Run it, install it and update it.

this worked for me. Hopefully it can help someone else.

I managed to get the update by letting it donwload "overnight", just like the poster a couple of pages back did. It took forever, but it is installed .

I'm having this problem, as well, on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. I tried the steps SymbolicBear went through above, but no luck.

I guess all there's left to do is let it run all day...?

I sent a "bug report" in to Customer Service and will see what they come back with.  In trying to get this installed on my new computer (Windows 7, 64-bit), I've used up all my downloads for the month...  Hoping they will get reset and I can try the long update tonight.

I've had this problem several times in past months and have resolved a "hung" download by cancelling the download and then using the "continue update" option.  Things seem to be working fine with the latest update (one hour ago) on XP 64 bit.

Update: I followed Customer Service suggestions for a clean build and then let the update run overnight.  Came down to the following screenshot this AM:

I "launched" and everything is working with the current update.  Will try same method again this evening for the Adventure Tools.

Here are a couple of tips from my experience:

1) If the progress bar has not moved in several minutes, disconnect your computer from the Internet, cancel the download, reconnect, and then try again.  The last time I did that, the download completed almost instantly.

2) I have also noticed that the Character Builder will accumulate garbage data and start acting funny after a few months.  Completely removing and then reinstalling the program from scratch will usually fix the problem.

I've been fighting with this all week and I finally fixed the hang up problem by starting the CBI by right clicking the desktop icon and then clicking on "Run as administrator" and it update without a hitch.

the update has been the biggest pain in the a$$ for me!

i've contacted wizards so many times to reset the 5-download limit because i have to uninstall/reinstall over and over again!

i have a few computers and got it to update properly once on one computer. i'm doing it now and, like all the umpteeth time, it just sits at the finished-download screen (that someone posted a pic here).

and now, i've used up the limits *again* without any update success.

major pain!

another thing: i thought it might be just cb, but adventure tools does the same thing -- it just *sits there!!!*

argggggg!!

Affecting me, too. CB I am not too surprised about (I assume it will shortly be unsupported). Adventure Tools I am somewhat angry about, because I re-subscribed specifically to get it again, *after* I had checked that it was still available on the site.

None of the suggestions above working for me, would be nice to know if we get more accurate diagnostics/fix . . .

After about a week and a half of trying to get it to update it finally said "Success".

I've tried just about every trick thats been suggested like leaving it overnight and uninstalling .NET 4 (didn't work). Tried an older computer that's never heard of .NET4 - didn't work.

In the end I re-installed .NET4, uninstalled CB, reinstalled, rebooted, tried to update, failed, pressed cancel, tried again, failed again, try, fail, try, fail, success!

Like somone else said, the only solution seems to be persistance...I have no idea why it suddenly worked, but in the end it did.

And I don't belive it has anything to do with .NET4 as has been suggested...when it finally did succeed it was with .NET4 installed.

While "stalled", the updater is downloading MASSIVE amounts of data. Far more than is reasonable. My update has been running for about a day now, and so far I've received 3.2GB. Maybe there is a full-length movie in there somewhereSmile

WoC does not seem to be concerned about burning bandwidth...

Update to Adventuring tools is the same story - MASSIVE download, even for the latest "update" which claims it has NO DATA!
