Now, my laptop goes down, so I install the CB on my wife's laptop, which isn't a very good laptop, but it meets the specs. But the CB won't update! If you just double-click a .dnd4e character file, it will open the character, but if you try to open it from the main icon and let it look for updates, it'll sit there for hours saying it's "checking for an update". Thinking it might just be her laptop, I decide to hell with it, I'm installing ti on my fairly whiz-bang work laptop. It's an XP Pro machine with 2GB of RAM and tons of hard drive space. It installs like a champ...but it STILL won't update!!! I've been letting the bastard run for probably 4 or 5 @#(*%& hours, and it's still on the @(#*&@( splash screen, saying it's "checking for updates". These two laptops couldn't be more different; the only thing they have in common is that they're both Dells. Surely the CB doesn't discriminate against a manufacturer. Granted, I hate Dells too, but come on! Is there some known bug about that? |

| #3theandoJul 02, 2009 9:43:56 | I did that last night and it still won't actually pick up the update. And the worst part is since it seems none of the tech team are paying any attention to this board and haven't given me any kind of support, I tried to go E-mail them using the links along the top of the forum, and the page won't come up for me, just a never-ending string of warning dialogues about sending data over an unsecure connection. I try my best to be patient and understanding when it comes to technology, as I work in technology myself and understand that issues happen. but I paid for this subscription and I am not getting my money's worth out it if the program won't update itself, and I'm not getting any kind of support on this. Now, I'm reasonable, but at a certain point I also want some results. Does the team not ever actually read these boards? |
| #4MachusJul 25, 2009 15:58:07 | If it makes you feel any better I have the same issue. XP, and it won't update. Mine simply won't connect to the update server. I did all the troubleshooting threads, re-installed 5 times, (never had the beta), updated frame, java, etc., firewall investigation, virus scans all off/uninstalled, nada. Installed it on my old XP laptop, nada. Installed it on my wifes Vista computer? Worked first time no issue (all same router/modem as my 2 XP machines). Still no resolution for the XP machines, really unfortunate. If there is a trick you end up finding post or PM. |

| #6MachusJul 30, 2009 18:21:28 | TheAndo, To my surprise I installed XP Service Pack 3 (again, just downloaded it), for a different reason, and low and behold the character generator allowed an update. That's after having tried re-install, net frame updates, firewall settings, virus scan nonsense, etc. |
| #7theandoAug 01, 2009 9:41:22 | Huh, fancy that. Well, this being my work laptop, I can't manually install XP SP3, but our home office is planning that mass upgrade, but not until late August/September, and I've already been without the full CB for several months, and I feel like my money is being wasted since I can't use it. I can't access that help E-mail Us link, but I went and posted to the thread, so hopefully somebody can do something for me. This is ridiculous! I'm into my second month DMing a 4e campaign, and my players just hit Level 4, making my "demo" CB version worthless. |
