Character Builder Won't Start

I have looked through dozens of pages of problems regarding installation and updating the CB but my problem just dosen't seem to fit what I've read so far, and since I really don't have the time to read hundreds of pages of problems, I thought I would start a new thread instead.

Here goes...

I have installed the Charactr Builder onto my PC with out any apparent problems, however, whenever I ctually try and run it it freezes up on me.

The initial screen that asks you if you want to 'search for an update' or 'launch character builder' comes up just fine. whenever I actually choose one of those options however is when the program freezes on me. In the case of looking for an update, the inital screen remains, the orange bars start to appear, and then every thing stops. When I select the 'launch character builder' option, the first page comes up with the buttons for 'create new', load character' and 'quick character'. None of the buttons work. they don't light up, nothing, zip, zilch, nada.

I have a Dell PC with a intel Pentium D processor.
currently running Windows XP with Internet Explorer7

The thing that is really frustrating is that until 3 weeks ago, it was working just fine, when for no apparent reason it stopped working when trying to download an update. I have since uninstalled and re-installed the CB on three different occasions with the same result.

Can anybody help out a (barely) computer literate player?

Thanks in advance-

Hi TC,

On the Known Issues page, there is an Addition under the Installation section. Have you tried it? I must admit, I don't know if it's the reason behind your issue or not. I'm no computer person myself. I'll post the section below. The Known Issues can be found here: http://wizards.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wizards.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1543

Addition – In some yet unidentified cases, the Character Builder Demo installer set some files as read-only. This can cause issues on the update. If you have updating issues, check that your Character Builder Demo files are not set as Read-Only (Right click, then properties). If some are set this way, go to the Demo folder, right click on it, and select Properties to set the folder to not be read-only. Then confirm you want to apply this change to sub-folders and files, and then run the update again.

I've just updated with the march update and Character Builder is also not loading. I tried removing all the read only in the Wizard of the Coast folder and that didn't work.

In my task manager, it should up as around 50% CPU usage and around 110,000 K of memory usage.

Having this issue myself, for the second time. Got it to work after about a month and then this update destroyed all the progress. Tried to set the folders to not be 'read only' but it just resets when I close the property windows and still didn't work. Just about out of updates at this point as well.

Interestingling enough, I have finally gotten my CB to run again. I tried installing the latest (PHB2) update and now it works fine ?! (for now...)

Beats me. If WotC if having this many people with problems downloading/updating their products, then mabye they should look at having another company doo the work instead.

You just tried the install again and then it worked?
