Apr 01, 2009 21:05:43 Well if there was one out there as indepth as the actual character builder, that was also free, and not supported by WotC, it would be in copyright breach, so I don't like your chances, really.

Though I wish we could have a slimmed down version that was free...

Apr 01, 2009 23:14:13 I've never had a monthly subby to anything online before, but $5 a month for the Character Builder, compendium, both magazines, and everything else was just too good to pass up. Hell, I'd have paid that JUST for the CB. Excellent program.

Apr 02, 2009 10:24:04 For WotC's Character Builder, you only need the 'subscription' for one month. I subscribed for $8, then immediately canceled, and got two 'updates' out of the CB. Granted I'm not up to date now, as I don't have any PHB2 content beyond the previews. But I can still build a PHB1/MP character. Rather than risk losing it during a computer crash, I installed and updated it in a virtual machine, and archived it, so I can continue to use it from any computer.

After a few more books come out, I might drop another $8 and update it.

It's not free, though, and for those on a really tight budget, it's not close enough. I thought it was worth it though.
