I just wanted to inform y'all about a few small problems on the character sheet that I just noticed.

1. When printing in horizontal view the power cards are duplicated for some odd reason (I get two full sets of the exact same sheets).

2. The Player Name does not appear on the power card summary (first power card).

3. Similarly to the above comment, the character class does not appear on that same power card.

On a positive note, the horizontal sheet is AMAZING!

Actually each time you switch between landsacpe and portrait and addition set of cards is added to the character sheet.

Seems like any time you do anything with the character sheet now it adds a whole new set of power cards.

Hide blank power cards, gain new set
Show optional cards gain new set of power cards

My first level wizard ended up with a 19 page character sheet with the same set of power cards repeated about 8 times.

lol seems they broke something in the Patch too bad it'll be a month before we get a fixed version. Why do they give us 5 updates a month if they only bother to patch the thing once a month

Haha, I'm up to 54 pages just trying to make them go away! I really hope they patch this soon. Shutting down the application and relaunching does not reset your character sheet.

I'm having the same issue. None of those options seem to be functioning properly. Pretty inconvenient.

agreed. I don't print the whole thing, but it is rather very annoying.

The only above problems I'm having are the character's class not showing up on first card and "Default Horizontal/Vertical Layout" adding a duplicate set of cards.

I had the same power card duplication issue with applying custom sheet layouts.

For me, most any layout edits are duplicating power cards, including optional and basic attack cards (if displayed), but *not* magic item power cards. I even tried de-leveling and removing all powers, checking the sheet, then re-adding the powers back in... no success.

if this is not fixed BEFORE the next monthly update, I will be dropping my paid subscription!

Yes, this is VERY annoying, and I'll be very disappointed in WOTC if I have to wait a month before this is fixed.

Yes, I encountered this problem today, too.

That's a great question... why do they give us five updates if they only patch once a month?

I don't come here often, the WotC people respond to this board much?

In case there are problems updating. In case you uninstall the program. In case you decide to break the license agreement and put it on more than one computer.

Not often, but they seem to read more than they post.

Any other company that broke their own program with an update would have a patch to fix it available to everyone in a week or so.

I can understand only giving us new Content on the update day but Fixes to broken parts of the program should be ASAP.

Not a lot of offense meant, but have you narrowed down the problem causing it? Is it a function not getting called? Is it something wrong inside a function call? Is it a foreign OS causing problems again?

Other companies don't have a monthly deadline for brand new content, and probably have a lot more people working on the project.

I have a feeling that no matter what the team does, people will find something to gripe about. If they focus on squashing bugs, people will complain about not getting the new content. If they focus on the new content, people complain about bugs not getting fixed. Bah, humbug.

At least I'm rooting for the team on this project. You guys are doing some amazing work!

Agreed that the team is doing a great job.

But this (Bigby's Ever Duplicating Power Cards) is a pretty horrible bug, easily repeatable. I certainly agree that it would be nice to have this patched prior to the data patch because it is unclear what this might be doing to the saved character file.

There is some evidence that the CB saves data in a unclean way. I first noticed this using iPlay4e to display character data: weapons I tried just for a moment (and then got rid of) are apparently are still saved into the data file which may mean the data gets dirtier and dirtier with every option you check out.

Maybe someone else can speak on this more knowledgeably?

Oh please don't misinterpret my frustration with this bug as a slight against the team making this product! I LOVE the character builder, and I'm so overwhelmingly appreciative that they took the time to not only build a program that is so useful and all-encompassing, but that it looks great and is easy to use!

I only seconded the opinion about the power cards because this has become a program breaker for me. It now takes 1-2 minutes every time I make a change in the character, as it readjusts my now 181 pages of power cards. I cannot get the cards to go away, and if I want to see how the change has affected my character I have to go to the character sheet.

I have a session tomorrow that I am not ready for because I cannot decide on a feat for my next level!

Even though I'm fairly good with technology, I don't know the first thing about programming, as I'm a Middle School English Teacher, so I don't know if it's an OX fault or callfile parameter fluxuation, or what. I do know that the only two options I have are to stop using the program until it is fixed, or try re-entering the whole character and hope that resets the character sheet. I haven't tried that yet as that's my last resort!

But again, I LOVE the program, and I thank all those who work on it ... you really should be proud! (And, if it makes you feel any better, I haven't found any spelling or grammar errors!) ;)

Ugh.

As soon as I hit enter I realized something:

"Hey dummy, turn off the power cards"

I haven't tried that yet. I'm embarrassed that I just thought of that. I'm going to try that this evening.

I've been grading too much.. my mind is mush. :D

But then you don't have power cards.

This needs to be fixed. Period. It's a very bad bug that severely limits the program's usefulness.

I had tried that and it works, kindof. If you already have duplicated cards, it is still a bit slow and it does not remove the extras. If you turn off all power cards before making any changes, then turn them back on afterward, it does indeed prevent the duplication. but that workaround is not an excuse to not fix this major bug!

[edit]Another workaround (but yet again, *not* an excuse to not fix the bug ASAP) is to open your character's file (name.dnd4 file found in the my documents/ddi/ folder) in notepad or wordpad, and find the offending powercard text and just delete it all. I tried to delete everything, in hopes it would rebuild the missing data, and it worked. Here is what I deleted from one of my 1st level characters... (who, if you show optional cards AND melee basic cards, should only have a total of 12 power cards)...

I just had this problem, and I fixed mine by terminating the program in Task Manager, and then re-opening it. I hadn't saved the character after adding the 8+ pages of power cards, though.

HELP ME!!!!

I just rolled an 8th level bard for a new campaign my friend is running. We were already irritated that we had to wait so long for the PHB2 classes in the CB.

So CBuilder finally updated and YAY I can make my bard!

Only I now have TWENTY-FIVE PAGES of duplicate power cards. Hiding them works, and presumably hiding them before editing the interface WOULD HAVE worked had I known about this bug in advance.

I've got a bunch of test characters I just rolled for fun and they look great. The one character I want to play looks like total crap. And each time I do anything to edit the layout, my PC momentarily freezes while it tries to figure everything out, even though I'm running 4 gigs of ram.

Am I going to have to wait another month for a viable PHB2 character sheet?

Is Wizards laughing all the way to the bank?

Well this is just great. I tried the method of opening in Wordpad and deleting the powers as suggested above.

I used the character summary card text string as my frame of reference for when my "real" power cards started and when all the extra sets began to delete all the extra sets.

When I reloaded my character sheet, it copied even more powers.

My bard is now 84 pages long after trying that fix.

In addition, my "Hellish Rebuke" power granted by my Hellfire Wand +2 is showing as an At-Will power. The magic item card correctly has "Encounter" checked, but there is an actual "at-will" card for the power among my power cards (well, several of them if you've been paying attention). I do not have this power any other way; for Dilettante I chose Eldritch Blast, and for my Warlock multiclass feat I have Eyebite. Both are showing correctly as Encounter powers for the bard even though they were originally at-will powers.

Try deleting ALL powers, don't leave anything that you think may belong there - just as in the above post, delete everything from to ... and t will repopulate with one copy only. At least, it has worked for me on 6 different characters that had become corrupted.

WOOHOO! It worked!!

Thanks, Karossi!

Very annoying to have to do but at least I got a real charsheet back.

I pray to the gods that it is so. This is an unacceptable major flaw even for a one-time fee type item.

To perpetuate these problems for a month at a time for a paid subscription is like spitting in the face of your paying customers.

This worked for me as well. Thanks for posting this!

Now if the program worked as intended... that'd be great.

I can't believe someone at WOTC didn't catch this before release. Likewise, I can't believe someone hasn't responded to our complaints.

Crap like this makes it really hard to keep paying a monthly fee.

Just adding a "me too" post. Just went in this morning to update my sheets after having run the update, and started the (rather comical) process of creating unwanted extra power cards. I'll try the config edit tonight to resolve temporarily.

Another option - cuteftp. Just save the file as .pdf and print what you need from there.

Add me to the list of folks that want this fixed ASAP.

The issues I have had found so far.

1) Often times the damage and to hit calculations are blank.
2) Switching from vert to horizontal layout adds another set of cards. (However as this thread already mention, hiding the power cards seem to work). The first thing I do now is start a character, switch to Hide power cards and then set it to landscape (if it is not that way in the first place.)

Yeah, I just subscribed today and was almost ticked off enough about this to try to get my money back. Luckily I found this thread and could fix it temporarily. But between this and the lack of tactics or lore in the compendium, and the absence of the visualiser, WOTC is not off to a good start with me.

*ahem*

WOTC is giving new meaning to the term "Customer Disservice".

It'd be one thing if they aren't developing new tools because they aren't sure how they'll sell. But these are known, obvious, hindering issues in a product we not only ALREADY paid for, but are asked to CONTINUE paying for.

wow. Calm down people...really. The first post of this thread was on March 24th. It's April 6th. Any half-decent software company is going to have to replicate the problem, locate the function that is misbehaving, create a fix, review the fix, put the fix into test environment and then send to deploy for download. At a minumum this will involve three or more departments and a dozen or more people.

After finally putting out a really good character generation utility (face it, pre 4E they all SUCKED) give 'em a couple weeks. Imagine if they put out a fix that broke more features because they didn't go through testing. Yeesh you people would FREAK.

Yes, this problem blows. Yes, you can argue it should have been caught before they released it. But seriously, there's a work around and a fix. Stop throwing a tantrum over something that should clearly be fixed in the next patch.

Of course, if it's not fixed in the next patch, I'll be right there with ya.....

Same problem here. I do certainly hope that WoTC fixes this.

I actually have another problem where a selective few of my character's attacks are duplicating, but the rest are not... It appears to be a seperate bug. For example, my half-orc character has his Furious Assault power twice, even though it's an encounter power.

Actually each time you switch between landsacpe and portrait and addition set of cards is added to the character sheet.

I had this same issue when adding Journal pages. I fixed it by hand editing the XML file -- nothing I did within the editor itself would fix it.

To fix it, look for this tag within the XML file:
<CharSummaryCard Visibility="Visible" IsInSpellbook="False" />

If there are more than one of these tags, it means you have the duplicate powers pages. By comparing the line immediately before the second copy of that line, you can determine the entirety of the block needed to cut to fix the problem. In my case, the block ended with:
</PowerCardMagicItem>

Remember to make a backup copy of your xml file BEFORE hand editing it, however, since it is possible to render it unreadable if you are not careful.

It appears that many people here are disappointed with the lack of a "response" from WOTC. That's funny... how much hand holding do you want?

Why don't you post issues in their Help system? (Don't post this issue, they have already acknowledged this problem by putting it on the "Known Issue List - D&D Insider Character Builder")

I suspect they don't have time to craft a gorgeous "Thank you" reply to every post...

It is far from "hand-holding" that I asked for.

I first reported the issue in the help system. After several days of no response there, either directly to me (an email saying we're aware of the issue and are working on it) or indirectly (adding it to the known issues list), I came to the forums - this thread had been posted... so I chimed in.

I simply wanted them to fix what was once working, which they then broke. I wanted it done immediately. It wasn't. I canceled my subscription. Simple.

I hope I am not the only one, perhaps they will figure out they need to get things properly implemented before releasing them. I would rather have bi-monthly or quarterly updates that are 110% working, instead of monthly updates that break my old content.

As stated earlier, and in many "bug" threads: The wizards want you to use the bug reporting system they've set up instead of the forums.

It's unreasonable to expect immediate fixes. It's unreasonable to expect more than an automated "thank you" response message to a bug.

With an estimated 6 million players world-wide, if just 1/2 of 1% sends an email with a bug report, that's 30,000 emails. Even taking 1 minute to respond to each one consumes 500 hours or about 21 man-days of labor.

Vote with your dollars (as some of you have) and leave it at that.

I did vote with my dollars, and I did report the bug first - I came to the forum only a few days after when it was still not yet listed in the known bugs section. I did not expect an individual email, but I did expect a general listing in the known bugs section, acknowledging the problem. It took 4 days after my report (and I am sure I am not the only to have reported it since it is a universal bug) before they acknowledged it.

Besides, quit griping about people coming here to complain. There is no way to vent frustration, anger, loss, etc. in the bug reporting. People come here (and tech support forums in general) for two reasons - to find fixes to the problems wizards hasn't yet fixed (as presented in this thread), and to vent.

Fixed! Thanks! I had one hundred and twenty four pages... Good god D:

There was 446kb worth of power cards in my .dnd4e LOL!

They didn't respond in four days? *gasp*

Maybe you should try developing software sometime. The amount of things they are fixing/adding is astounding. Yes, something broke in the last update. Big deal. There's a work-around and a fix posted earlier in this forum. I'm not saying you need to re-subscribe, but your expectations are ridiculous.

I have worked as both a software developer and a game (hardcopy) developer. And when I have done so, I was part of a team. And another member of that team was tasked to handle customer service issues. Now my team had one member, but we were a much smaller company than WotC so it is my expectation as a customer that they provide enough people to handle such issues that I won't be waiting for four days. That is hardly unrealistic (much less ridiculous), in fact it is heavily based in reality. You don't provide customer service, you lose your customers - it is one of the key principles of commercialism.

And if you read back, you will notice that I am the one who posted the workaround and the fix. I am quite aware of it (and since I came up with it first, it was unavailable to me until I found it on my own).

Because so far the indication is that you posted on the Fan Forum and expected a customer service reply... good luck.. ;)

Yes, as you can see from my earlier post, I first reported the issue through the help system, which is a part of customer service. I've mentioned that two or three times now.

[edit] This post should not be focused on me. I didn't ever mean for it to be. I'm not sure why these last few days it seems to have gotten on that path. I reported things properly and they didn't handle things as I felt they should. I am dissatisfied, I canceled my subscription because of it. That should be the end of it.

The patch is out, it has corrected the power card duplication issue. I don't know if it fixes previous duplication since I already used the fix that was posted earlier in this thread.

@karossii: Sorry if my sarcasm was a bit much, but I've been an online gamer for years (unreal, battlefield, battle.net, etc, etc) and to expect a response within 4 days does seem ridiculous to me. In my experience with these companies a reported bug would be addressed in the next patch, perhaps months in the future, unless it was causing system crashes. And at most you would get a cookie-cutter "We got your message, it's a bug, wait for the patch" type response.

IMO, the character generator is leaps and bounds over their previous products of similar type and a monthly update that includes rule changes and new books is just fantastic for the price. Granted, if it were much more I wouldn't pay for it, but where it is, it is worth the price.
