I sure hope WOTC makes the character visualizer a downloadable program that is periodically updated through their website. I guarantee if it's come crap that you have to do online, then the constant usage by the online masses will make it a slow and hard to use system. I can't get over the fact that this online game table and character visualizer, if done correctly, will the biggest thing to hit D and D since...well....since DnD began. Imagine no longer having to spend 6 months trying to find a gaming group in a new city!!!! All I can do is hope everything works great but I keep getting this feeling, maybe it's because i'm pessimistic, that the game table and visualizer will be garbage and a completely useless system with cheesy graphics and huge gaping holes in programming. PLEASE WOTC PROVE ME WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The character visualizer, as well as the character builder, the D&D Game Table and the dungeon Builder will all be downloadable software. The D&D Game Table will require that you are online and a subscriber to be used, but the client application will be installed on your computer. The others have various range of functionalities, some available only when online and being an active subscriber, others like the dungeon builder fully usable offline even for non subscribers. Only subscribers will be able to get updates online.

Well of course you have to be online to use an online game table...just like with maptool or FG, the game table is useless without internet and a server. And to use WotC servers, they can require you to subscribe...and that is the plan.

And many of us continue to be ignored...

"Oh no! A company expects PAYMENT FOR THEIR SERVICES! The end of the world nears!"

"No, the exaggeration was not needed, but neither is the whining..."

I don know about FG, but you do not need to be on line to use Map Tool. I use it stand alone with my projector, and I also use it on my LAN. The internet is not required.

And a subscription is even less required!

Huh??

I'll respond to mudbunny since I respect him, and Kyros_Tachyus pretty much summed up my response to the other...

What I meant is there's a great deal of us that want to be able to use the Game Table offline without a subscription fee, but with a higher initial cost. More of a standalone application than a client application.

I am only answering questions that are related to current functionalities of the client applications. You are asking questions about change of business decisions, and I have no answer for those. GZ, myself and others do read the comments, and GZ make sure they are being heard internally, but that is all that can be said about it.

Fair enough.

Although if I came off like I was attacking you or GZ, I apologize. I was not targeting you, just quoting you. I was saying the "higher ups" were ignoring us, not you.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

Hmm, well in this situation, I haven't heard what the game table's function is, and would like to know. Maptool does work offline, however the draw of the game table is online play (also the draw of maptool, which is why I use it). If you didn't connect to a server, there's no reason to pay for the game table.

If DDI doesn't provide this function, don't be surprised if the software is hacked and private servers built for just this kind of purpose. And DDI should take into account offline usage of the software. It's my understanding, however, that it is an online only game table.

I will carry this into another thread.

We are taking in account the use of the application in a normal game, but this will still require the DM to be online and be a subscriber to use the application this way.

We particularly want to support DM using two monitors or one monitor and one projector, so there is a player view in a separate window that will be available.

This said, our main focus is indeed online play, where the players control their characters directly. If the DM controls all the characters, this is possible, but our focus is not on this type of use.

This is certainly an area that we will improve based on the community feedback during the beta test or after launch.

I think that the concern is the requirement for being online.

I know you aren't the one making these decisions, but still there are a lot of people who would prefer a more initially expensive, standalone application that doesn't require you to be online and can be used via a LAN.
