Are there any chat or message programs that I could install that would allow me to not only send messages to the players more covertly then handing them a piece of paper, but also allow me to see what the players are saying to each other?

This would be for an in-person game where all the players have laptops.

The ability to send files would be nice as well.

Any suggestions?

Because certain checks I may only want the people who succeded on the check to know about it, and passing a note to 2 players is obvious that something has happened.

Also, sometimes characters keep secrets from each other.  Such as two characters that are having a secret love affair and they don't want the other characters to know about it, and some of the players are poor at not meta-gaming.

There are a lot of reasons to be able to type a message to someone even though they are in the same room.

I would use MSN and simply require them to add you to any in-game conversation they are having...
