Class Compendium spread out over months? Whut?

Am I the only one disgruntled by this?  I would have bought this book on release - and gotten all the class updates at once.  Now we have to wait as they trickle in, a class per month - for months? I appreciate that we are at least getting the material, but a special, single PDF release would have been kinder...

My 2.

Carry on.

Seeing as there's nothing new in them?  I don't see why anyone would care one way or the other.

Eh.

I'd've preferred to see proper errata or an actual published book, rather than padding Dragon out with errata, but as long as what IS essentially errata remains freely accessible, as it should be, I don't really mind.

If they start putting these erraticles behind the paywall, then I'll start getting annoyed.

But, then I wonder – why are both free?  I mean, why is both Class Compendium: Warlords and the CC: Warlords Addendum free?

The Addendum is essentially eratta, and should always be free.  But the entire article should be for subscribers only, because otherwise it's like giving away a part of the Player's Handbook for free.  And when they're done with it, it'll be like they gave away that entire book for free, minus what's present in Player's Essentials.

This.  I know they have already done most of the work of writing two or three sentences of extra fluff for each power, and providing step by step instructions for everything else involved in leveling the character.  But is 31 pages of that really the best use of space in Dragon?  It seems almost to provide an excuse for shorting on the actual new (be it fluff or crunch) stuff.

I agree the fluff heavy format should be paywall, while the straight Errata should be free.

The fluff is actually new stuff.

That said, it is kind of silly that this article took them so long to get out, for little less than a page of changes, and some of the errata was already given months ago.

From the sounds of it they are doing a more thorough job on the warlock.

It does feel like padding, though.

I agree that the full write-up should be behind the paywall.  Even though I'm not subscribed right now!  :D  I think it could act as good bait for non-subscribers like myself.  But oh well, I got to read it already... Yay!

I don't think it took them a long time to get it ready for print.  I think they have a schedule for getting these things out that considers more than when the article is print ready.  It's part of their business strategy, whatever that may be.

Looking forward to the rest of the CC.

It's probably free because the addendum is not particularly complete - it tells you in general what changed, but not the exact wording, and that's critical. It's not the "normal" style of errata, where the changed element is reprinted to show it's new, official state.

Is there any sort of confirmation that they are going to do this for the Warlock? (Or at least a source for these rumors I see everyso often?).

I certainly hope they are, but I'm not sure where this info is coming from. Every time I see the Class Compendium articles described they only list the Fighter, Warlord, Rogue, Wizard, and Cleric. (Seems weird to leave out the Warlock but I never see it listed in any of the official stuff...).

I believe the original Class Compendium (which was first designed as a print product) was just for those classes listed above - no Warlock. Given they are mainly just porting the unpublished material over to Dragon, it seems unlikely they would expand it to cover more classes, so I'd say odds are against seeing anything for the Warlock along these lines.

That was my original assumption (still it seems weird not to just put one together, and weird that it wasn't going to be included in the original book) but people keep saying they've heard about Warlock stuff coming at some point, just trying to get to where those rumors are coming from so I can decide for myself if I think they're credible or not.

I suspect that the real reason this book was cancelled was that it just wasn't up to scratch. (ie. quality control issues) Perhaps they're doling them out because they need to do major rewrites and with most of their writers already comitted to other projects they don't have the manpower to get it all done quickly.

OR.... they want to pad dragon magazine. Either way, I don't care. From what I've seen of the warlord, the changes aren't significant enough to make sell my PHB1 on ebay. I'll get them when I get them, I'm in no hurry for little changes.

Will there be any update to the original warlock class features of Warlock’s Curse and various powers (similar to the rogue’s Sneak Attack and the wizard’s spells received in Heroes of the Fallen Lands)?

The warlock from Player’s Handbook will receive the same update treatment as the five classes mentioned above—which will include ensuring that the warlock’s class features and powers inflict enough damage. Expect this update treatment to appear in Dragon, with a target date of June. (We might need to push that date back, as we’ve just kicked off the project, but that is our target date.)

Oh thanks! Somehow I'd missed that in the past!  Excellent news/find.
