I am really shocked that Wizards has not developed a simple API that allows one of the, oh 200+ companies out there building apps for the iPhone, iPad, to pull an electronic version of the character data.

Are you really that concerned that someone is going to steal all of your silly power data?

We had a discussion about an API recently (about 2 months ago?) and Mudbunny was going to throw the conversation thread over to the DDI peeps.  Haven't heard anything since, but Mud said as much could happen.

No.  It uses the XML from the character save files and scrapes the Compendium if you provide username/password.  An API would be a direct interface to the rules engine/database that the CB uses.

I thought the part that used an API was where you had to sign in to DDi to see the powers etc.

Let me clarify:

The above posters are suggesting that WotC release an API for the Character Builder.  iPlay4e uses the Compendium API.  Two separate animals.  The idea of an API for CB would be to allow the community to develop a GUI for other platforms like iPhone, Kindle, Android, AppleOS, HTML 5, or pretty much whatever and just have that GUI interface with the CB API.

So...while you are right that iPlay4e does indeed access a WotC API, it is not the one being discussed.  Let me further add that no such API exists at this time.

No, iPlay4e just uses the URLs that are embedded in your dnd4e file. It would be the same as you copying and pasting those URLs into your browser address bar. No API is used by iPlay4e, nor does it scrape any data.
