I am trying to create a companion for my ranger within character builder.  However, whenever I click "Next" under the "Companions and Familiars" tab, it takes me to the "Generate ability scores" portion of my ranger insstead of any companion-ish functions.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Slight change.  I created an archery ranger, but I selected some  beast master attacks and have created a companion for myself.  I can see that, if I create a beast master ranger, I can add the beast, but how do I do it if I want an archery ranger w/ a companion?

You can't.  Archer Ranger and Beastmaster Ranger are two completely different builds.  You can't add a companion to a character just because you want to.

Ah, didn't realize that.   Thought you could just dip into the beastmaster powers like you can dip between an archer and dual wield ranger.

Thanks for the clarification.

The Archery Ranger build only actually provides you access to free Defensive Mobility and some paragon paths IIRC, so you should be able to just build a Beastmaster Ranger, and stat yourself for Archery.

It occurs to me just now how much I would like it if the Beast powers didn't show up in the CB unless you were actually making a Beastmaster ranger.

Yes this would be nice.. if you don't have a Beast (which is conscious and present in the encounter) you cannot use Beast powers afterall.
