| #1Plaguescarred1Jan 22, 2011 22:30:00 | Tools such as the Compendium and the OCB have serious discrepencies between some of their content and the printed books they claim as source. I am not talking about Erratas. But about supposedly latest content VS the info archived. Some people re-arrange content as they see fit without actually making proper entry. I am talking about the changing of Powers and Features which this Tool claim Books as Sources. Take Blood of Vengeance www.wizards.com/dndinsider/compendium/po... The Compendium list a weird Encounter Power attached to it rendering it usable once in the encounter. If it is anything, it`s an At-Will Attack it should have been. And it list the source as PHB2 ! Compendium: Blade of Vengeance Blade of Vengeance Attack VS PHB 2: Blade of Vengeance Daily - Conjuration, Divine, Implement Standard Action Ranged 10 Effect: You conjure a blade of vengeance in an unoccupied square within range. The blade lasts until the end of your next turn. The blade occupies 1 square. Enemies cannot move through its space, but allies can. The blade can flank enemies with you and your allies. In addition, you can make the following attack with the blade. Immediate Interrupt Melee 1 Trigger: An enemy within 10 squares of the blade hits your ally Effect: Before the attack, you move the blade to a square adjacent to the triggering enemy. Target: The triggering enemy Attack: Wisdom vs. Reflex Hit: 1d8 + Wisdom modifier damage. Sustain Minor: The blade persists, and you can move it 5 squares. Others include: Duelist's Prowess Secondary Power is a Daily too yet it is supposed to use it whenever an enemy attacks the Rogue. Combat Challenge appear in Power format in the OCB. Serpents of Flame Opportunity is set as a Daily in the Compendium and the OCB. Dancing Bolts is 3 Encounter powers breakup in the Compendium and the OCB. Cinder Storm is 3 Encounter powers breakup in the Compendium and the OCB. Bubling Acid shows an At-Will Secondary Power in the Compendium and OCB. All Leader Multiclass Feat Healing Words Powers (Bardic Dillettante -Majestic Word, Student of Battle - Inspiring Word, Initiate of the Faith - Healing Word, Student of Divine Runes - Rune of Mending, Fervant Talent - Ardent Surge, Student of Artifice -Healing Infusion) are Encounters Power usable once per day, yet the OCB turn them as Daily Power. Rod of Deadly Casting has a Property line for the 10's reroll instead of being into the Critical line. Resurgent Wilder's Volatile Surges Feature says your At-will Psionic attack Powers can score a Critical Hit on a roll of 18–20 while the compendium and the CB it just says, "at-will powers." White Well Transformation Secondary Power is a Daily too yet it is supposed to be used once per round, not once per day. Blessing of the Storm is an Invoker 16th level Daily Utility Power listed as a 16th level Daily Attack Power in the Compemdium and the CB. Call Celestial Steed is as Paladin Utility 4 Power in D393 but the power has no level in the Compendium and CB version, simply being called paladin Utility. (D393 Stealthily Updated in April 2011) Shattered Time Opportunity is set as a Daily in the Compendium and the OCB. And so on....the list is long. Especially older Powers with secondary attacks. They got changed for conveniences purposes its clear. But some are screwed or changed big time. I have no problem with the changes for some. Help better understand their working. But they need to make an entry in the Update document first if they change anything. Same for Combat Challenge as a Power in the CB. There is a significant difference in Combat Challenge being handled as a Power or as a Feature when knowing that a creature know all effects a Powers affect them will do for exemple. The Compendium is supposed to be a Database. A Database regroup datas from various sources archived. It`s not a test ground for building or changing stuff. Its supposed to be a reliable Database. Ok typos may happen and books should always take precedences. But here its deliberate changes. Wizards hear me please this must stop, your guys gotta stop the creative trend here. Please tell the Studios to stop changing stuff and stick to the books. Or make the appropriate changes through the proper Rule Update channel. I like those tools a lot. But they should be consistent to say the least. Especially if they are Rule Source for LFR and other WPN or Organized Play Program. Thanks Plague |
| #2Style75Jan 22, 2011 22:42:49 | This is really wierd and quite worrying. I hope these changes are simply errors and not some sort of unofficially errated revision. Are these changes turning up in the character builder? If so, it's going to create some unwanted chaos. Clarification on this from WotC would be greatly appreciated. |

| #4thewokJan 23, 2011 3:26:40 | Blade of Vengeance I guess whether this is in error depends on whether or not the attack can be made more than once. The Sustain line doesn't say that the power can be used again, but it's a very likely assumption. Duelist's ProwessSecondary Power is a Daily too yet it is supposed to use it whenever an enemy attacks the Rogue. I'm going to agree here and say that the secondary power should be an At-Will power. Combat Challengeappear in Power format in the OCB. It also appears in power format in the offline Character Builder, which is fine. Combat Challenge is a Fighter feature that also grants a power. That power is an Immediate Interrupt that has an effect of "make a melee basic attack." Serpents of FlameOpportunity is set as a Daily in the Compendium and the OCB. I think this is more an issue with their choice of format, rather than a change. The attacks are usable only once, unless the power is sustained. This information appears in the power block. Dancing Boltsis 3 Encounter powers breakup in the Compendium and the OCB. I will assume that this is to break up the power so that it will all display in the power cards. It does seem strange, but it's not a huge deal. Cinder Stormis 3 Encounter powers breakup in the Compendium and the OCB. Cinder Storm is formatted exactly like Bubbling Acid (more below that power). it is not three separate encounter powers in the Compendium. It's a Daily with an At-Will that can be used only when the Daily is active. Bubling Acidshows an At-Will Secondary Power in the Compendium and OCB. It has an at-will secondary power in Arcane Power as well. It's just not listed as a separate power. The power hasn't changed--only the format in which it is displayed. According to the PHB, these powers are usable once per day. There has been no errata to change this. Perhaps you're thinking about the hybrid classes? Those are usable once per encounter. Rod of Deadly Casting has a Property line for the 10's reroll instead of being into the Critical line. This is semantics. The Compendium makes it clear that rerolling 10s is possibly only on crit dice. It doesn't specifically say "crit dice only," but the crit dice are the only dice that would be rolled on a critical hit. |
| #5thespaceinvaderJan 23, 2011 4:03:39 | The compiled source for Dragon 393 has Call Celestial Steed as Paladin Utility 4, meaning that, regardless of how it's obtainable by the Cavalier, it can be taken by the Paladin in a utility slot of level 6 or later. But the power is not levelled in the Compendium (and, presumably, the CB - I can no longer check) meaning that it's not accessible to the Paladin as it should be. Clarification would be greatly appreciated. |
| #6Plaguescarred1Jan 23, 2011 18:14:27 | Blade of Vengeance Its not an error. Blade Vengeance has originally let you use the Blade of Vengeance Attack power with the blade everytime enemy within 10 squares of the blade hits your ally but since its an Immediate action, you're use it once per Round but every Round you'd Sustain it. Nothing implied you'd use it only once in an Encounter (the new one is an Encounter Power) Combat Challengeappear in Power format in the OCB. It also appears in power format in the offline Character Builder, which is fine. Combat Challenge is a Fighter feature that also grants a power. That power is an Immediate Interrupt that has an effect of "make a melee basic attack." Combat Challenge is a Feature, not a Power. There can be a difference since a creature know it all when affected by a Power, such as Divine Challenge but not if its a Feature Marking you. Its not fine. The Compendium is screwed in the sense that it only has a part of the text, with the other half contained in the Power which is absent from it but is in the OCB...(Specifically this: "In addition, whenever an enemy marked by you is adjacent to you and shifts or makes an attack that does not include you, you can make a melee basic attack against that enemy as an immediate interrupt") Compendium = COMBAT CHALLENGE In combat, it’s dangerous to ignore a fighter. Every time you attack an enemy, whether the attack hits or misses, you can choose to mark that target. The mark lasts until the end of your next turn. While a target is marked, it takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls if its attack doesn’t include you as a target. A creature can be subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark supersedes a mark that was already in place. In addition, you gain the Combat Challenge power. ????? Serpents of FlameOpportunity is set as a Daily in the Compendium and the OCB. I think this is more an issue with their choice of format, rather than a change. The attacks are usable only once, unless the power is sustained. This information appears in the power block Format ? No While this effect lasts, you can make the following secondary attack ....but the new power says The effect persists until the end of your next turn and you can repeat this power’s attacks. Serpents of Flame Attack is a Daily power and thus not usable again. Serpents of Flame Wizard Attack 15 VS Serpents of Flame Your arms become twin serpents of pure flame with which you harry your enemies. Daily Arcane, Fire, Implement, Polymorph Standard Action Melee 2 Target: One or two creatures Attack: Intelligence vs. Reflex Hit: 3d6 + Intelligence modifier fire damage, and you slide the target 1 square. Effect: You transform your arms into fiery serpents until the end of your next turn. While this effect lasts, you can use the Serpents of Flame Attack power. Sustain Minor: The effect persists until the end of your next turn. Sustain Standard: The effect persists until the end of your next turn and you can repeat this power’s attacks. Serpents of Flame Attack Dancing Boltsis 3 Encounter powers breakup in the Compendium and the OCB. I will assume that this is to break up the power so that it will all display in the power cards. It does seem strange, but it's not a huge deal. Format and wording was changed. Even if better explained and laid out, the point is that it should be subject to Rule Update like all of the similar changes. No Discrepencies should exist between Powers from various sources claiming the same reference as source. Cinder Storm and Bubbling Acid got new format. At least At-wills. It should be in a Rule Update. If i was under an effect saying i could not use At-Will Powers, i would not be able to use Cinder Storm Attack for exemple. So it impact the Rules that such reformatt are given a Power format and Usage Frequency. Those Healing powers as originally obtained through Multiclass never become DAILY Powers. They are Encounter Power usable once per day. It impact on the Rules that will call for such Powers and uses Frequency. Daily is a Keyword. For exemple, The Archmage Features Spell Recall and Archspell affect Daily powers. Student of Battle (or any other similar Leader MC Feat) doesn't give you Inspiring Word as a Daily Power. It give you the Encounter Power Inspiring Word once per day and thus would not be affected by it. Rod of Deadly Casting has a Property line for the 10's reroll instead of being into the Critical line. Enought clear to incite legitimate question on the Rule Q&A Forums. community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... Semantics ? Rules in 4E do what they say they do, no more no less. As is in the Compendium, any d10's rolling 10 on a critical hit would be get to roll the die again and add the result. Ex. Devastating Critical and any Magic Item Crit Property who'd be d10s I like those tools a lot but they need to be reliable and act as they claim (by sourcing) But i see discrepencies here that should not be. I only wish to have the tools be made better. |
| #7thewokJan 23, 2011 19:10:47 | Plaguescarred, I used my books, the update docs and the Dragon articles (and in one case, the offline CB) in question to make my post. I stand by my previous statements. Regarding the difference between an "encounter power usable once per day" and a daily power, there is none. A power usable once per day is a daily power. It is the same with the Half-elf's dilletante feature. An at-will power usable once per encounter is, by definition, an encounter power. Spell Recall would not work on Inspiring Word (or any other of the Leader healing powers) because it specifies "attack powers." If someone wants to turn Inspiring Word into an encounter power via a level 30 epic destiny feature, then I'm all for it. Of course, I don't think I would allow it since Inspiring Word, Healing Word and the like are not powers, but features that act like powers. Check it out. They are listed as "Warlord Feature" and "Cleric Feature." Where's the concern for the inconsistent use of the word "power"? |
| #8Plaguescarred1Jan 23, 2011 19:23:01 | Plaguescarred, I used my books, the update docs and the Dragon articles (and in one case, the offline CB) in question to make my post. I stand by my previous statements. A Encounter Power usable once per day is not a Daily Power, even if Daily Powers are themselves usable once per day. It's an Encounter Power usable once per day. At-Will, Encounter and Daily are usage frequency Keywords. Half-Elf Dillentante is a good exemple of what i try to illustrate. It takes an At-will Power and turns it into an Encounter Power both in printed books and Compendium. Keywords changes, contrary to what you think Dilettante: At 1st level, you choose a 1st-level at-will attack power from a class different from yours. You can use that power as an encounter power. Spell Recall would not work on Inspiring Word (or any other of the Leader healing powers) because it specifies "attack powers." If someone wants to turn Inspiring Word into an encounter power via a level 30 epic destiny feature, then I'm all for it. Archspell use a Daily Power as an Encounter Power (spells are Arcane Power). Again, it was to illustrate when something specific calls for a Daily or Encounter Power, it refers to the Power Usage Frequency Type Keyword (RC P. 90) Majectic Words obtained through Bardic Dilletante would not benefit from Archspell not being a Daily Spell. Archspell (30th level): Your comprehension of the ultimate arcane formula and of the spells that constitute it reaches a new threshold. Choose one daily spell that you know. You can now cast that spell as an encounter spell (rather than as a daily spell). |
| #9thewokJan 24, 2011 0:30:38 | Let me add something to your list here: Knights and Slayers in the Character Builder get access to "Knight Stances" or "Slayer Stances" at level 1. In Heroes of the Fallen Lands, these two classes get access to "Fighter Stances" at level 1. The lists should be combined, and both Knight and Slayer able to access all stances, as the book describes. |
| #10Plaguescarred1Jan 24, 2011 1:42:34 | Nah, one cannot take the Stances of another since they don’t have level. They are all Fighter Utility each received by their own respective Class Build. Perhaps they did it to facilitate the OCB the job to differenciate them each. May be the books should get an update to add Knight or Slayer Fighter Stances. But i see this as trivial. The By Level Utility Stance choice of name doesn't impact much on P. 130 & 153. (Level 1: Fighter Stance) |
| #11thespaceinvaderJan 24, 2011 3:48:26 | Yeah - most of the stances are shared, but the specific lists are different, and that is as intended. They should still be recorded as they are in the books, though. |
| #12ppaladin123Jan 24, 2011 13:39:34 | And of course there is the issue with the Resurgent Wilder's level 16 feature. In the book it specifies that you receive an 18-20 critical range with psionic at-will powers. In the compendium it just says, "at-will powers." This has been incorrect for months now. |

Thanks ppaladin123. List updated. This one may not be deliberate....might simply be an ommission though. |
| #14Plaguescarred1Feb 05, 2011 21:57:04 | List updated with White Well Transformation. |
| #15CrodocileFeb 07, 2011 3:05:47 | I noticed one a couple of weeks ago. The Invoker 16th level utility power Blessing of the Storm Father from Dragon 383 is listed in the compendium and CB as a 16th level daily attack power. Not that 16th level daily attack powers exist in the game, but whatever. |
| #16thespaceinvaderFeb 07, 2011 3:56:07 | Aren't you going to mention Call Celestial Steed? I did post about it a long time ago, and it's definitely wrong. |
| #17Plaguescarred1Feb 11, 2011 1:46:29 | Oops sorry thespa. Call Celestial Steed and Blessing of the Storm Father added it in the list of errors. Thanks guys |
