| #1dirty_trollkinJan 17, 2009 12:56:36 | My Character builder was working and then failed, I was unable to get it working again so I uninstalled and reinstalled. No I get a messag saying Configuration system failed to initialize, Send error report to Wizards, but when I hit the button to send I get an error saying it cannot connect to the server |
| #2falcongk81Jan 19, 2009 1:39:19 | I am having this same issue, although it was never working for me. I uninstalled .NET 3.5 SP1, downloaded it again from microsoft, installed .NET 3.5 SP1, rebooted, installed the Character Builder, rebooted, and tried to run and it is STILL happening. I'm on Windows XP Service Pace 3, Intel 2.6 gHz, with 2.5 megs of ram. Help please, I'd like to try this thing, and I'm thinking of becoming a subscriber, but this isn't filling me with warm fuzzies. |
| #3dirty_trollkinJan 19, 2009 16:28:50 | I am a subscriber and was really looking forward to the use of this tool. I also run XP sp2 core 2 duo 2 GHz 2 gig ram, .net 3.5 also reinstalled. |
| #4falcongk81Jan 20, 2009 17:31:47 | It would be really nice if we could get any help here. Thanks! |
| #5tnbankerJan 20, 2009 20:39:37 | Same problem here - it has been working fine until today. Today when I try to launch it, I get ERR: 2001: Configuration failed to initialize. Where do we get help for this? |
| #6tnbankerJan 20, 2009 21:01:30 | Same problem here - it has been working fine until today. Today when I try to launch it, I get ERR: 2001: Configuration failed to initialize. ![]() This is what happens when you try to send the report. Reinstalling the program did not help me either. Don |
| #7tnbankerJan 21, 2009 6:30:01 | [QUOTE=tnbanker;17676952Reinstalling the program did not help me either. Don I have emailed customer service and I am waiting for a reply. If anyone gets a response or finds a solution, can you post it here please?! Thanks Don |
| #8dirty_trollkinJan 22, 2009 16:37:18 | Bueller??? Bueller??? Really even an acknowledgement that someone from WoTC has seen this post would help. Not being able to use this, after using it for quite awhile is very frusterating. |
| #9tnbankerJan 22, 2009 18:47:07 | Bueller??? Bueller??? I received an initial email that Wizards got my question/problem but I have not heard back. Nothing, notta word. This is day 3 with no character builder and I have D&D this weekend. URGGG! CB is why I bought the DDI Subscription! Is there anyone out there?? |
| #10salickJan 23, 2009 12:37:15 | I also have the same issue with the program including the inability to send the error report. I figured if more people with the same problem post it increases the chance they come up with a fix. |
| #11newpwnageJan 23, 2009 17:47:13 | Same problem here - it has been working fine until today. Today when I try to launch it, I get ERR: 2001: Configuration failed to initialize. I just tried to use this program yesterday and got the same problems as you all, but with a nice little bonus on top. I grabbed the download managing file while it was still in demo mode, before the 20th or whenever it was released as open beta to non DDI subscribers. I then downloaded it yesterday, and tried to use it. Here's my problem. 1: when I download it, it gets 100% complete, and then it fails right after, saying the file doesn't exist where I saved it to. 2: I then find the file exactly where it was looking for it, and can proceed to install it. 3: I then try to run it and get this Config failure error you all are getting. I uninstalled and removed the demo file download manager, used the link to get that file again and re-download, and the exe ended up being the same one as before (12112008 or something) |
| #12tnbankerJan 24, 2009 16:14:05 | I just tried to use this program yesterday and got the same problems as you all, but with a nice little bonus on top. Still no resolution, still no CB. Am I supposed to call them? I never got a reply from the email I sent requesting assistance. Any Wizards folks reading this? |
| #13icornwalJan 25, 2009 17:52:44 | I can't get mine to work either. I have a fresh new install of windows XP Pro SP3. |
| #14mudbunnyJan 26, 2009 12:29:45 | I will poke this up higher. That being said, the release version of the CB is scheduled to come out this week, so your problem(s) may be something that has been fixed. |
| #15dirty_trollkinJan 26, 2009 14:41:34 | I'm happy to hear WoTC is on schedule to release the full version, I really am looking forward to this tool. But I am worried about spending money on something I thought would be part of my subscription without knowing its been addressed. Thanks Mudbunny |
| #16dirty_trollkinJan 26, 2009 19:42:56 | My son and I are doing a happy dance in the kitchen! We have the full version and it is working. I did an uninstall and deleted the folders created by the demo. The pulled the full version. It downloads a 40 Mb exe and then a large update file- it did require my subscription login. Followed the link to download the demo put it pulled the full version. Woot Woot!! Staying up all night long makin chacters |
| #17mudbunnyJan 26, 2009 22:22:20 | celebrates my awesomeness!! |
| #18falcongk81Jan 27, 2009 19:04:30 | My son and I are doing a happy dance in the kitchen! We have the full version and it is working. Can we get a link to this "full version" download? I still can't get this (bad word) thing working. I'd really like some help here, I am a paying customer now. And of course WotC cust serv is doing absolutely nothing. |
| #19mudbunnyJan 27, 2009 19:29:54 | Can we get a link to this "full version" download? I still can't get this (bad word) thing working. I'd really like some help here, I am a paying customer now. And of course WotC cust serv is doing absolutely nothing. Have you looked in this thread here? The download link is located here. If the instructions in the thread I mentioned don't work, post in that thread. You say that CS isn't doing anything. Have you submitted a ticket to them? |
| #20falcongk81Jan 27, 2009 23:04:03 | Have you looked in this thread here? Yes, I submited a ticket, got the regular canned "we received your question" email and then nadda. I've read in that thread, and done everything asked, as described in my earlier posts. I've uninstalled .NET 3.5 sp1, got a fresh download from microsoft, reinstalled it, reinstalled the character builder, and still the same issue. EDIT: And that download link is the same one I've been using. I'm getting a tad bit irritated, although it looks like others are having the same issue, so at least thats a bit of a sanity check. |
| #21skraigFeb 24, 2009 8:57:36 | I get this error now too. (Configuration system failed to initialize) I removed the character builder and reinstalled it. It worked fine until I put in the update. Then I got the error back ![]() How do we get it working with the latest data? Skraig |
| #22ORC_WyvernFeb 24, 2009 11:42:56 | I get this error now too. (Configuration system failed to initialize) Hi, I'm sorry you're having this issue. I would suggest contacting Customer Service with as much information about your operating system and the circumstances surrounding your Character Builder problem as you can. The more such direct reports they get, the easier it is for them to figure out what's going wrong. To make sure your report gets to the right place, when you click on the "Email Us" tab, please use the following topics: Roleplaying games>D&D Insider>Character Builder>Requset Technical Support |
| #23jstrong2May 17, 2009 12:33:30 | I'm having the same issues. I did the uninstalls and reinstalls of both CB and .net frame thingy and still nothing. :S Very frustrating, as I just renewed my subscription to D&Di pretty much DUE to the character builder! |
| #24yarthokJun 12, 2009 21:58:22 | Note that this is *not* an update issue. CB *was* running fine with the June '09 update. Character Builder has been working for me since the full version was released. Then two days ago, I got the "Configuration system failed to initialize" error. I followed this procedure to attempt to recover: 1) uninstalled CB 2) updated .Net 3.5 3) reinstalled CB 4) upgraded it 5) started it and still got the error a) uninstalled CB b) rebooted 3 times c) reinstalled CB d) did NOT upgrade it e) started CB. f) worked fine...without any of the June 09 update, but all previous updates seemed to be there. g) restarted CB h) this time I upgraded CB. i) The 'configuration system failed to initialize' error has returned. NOTE: The June 09 update *did* work prior to two days ago (I was playing with hybrid character builds.) When I try to send an error report I get a failed status for the 'connecting to server step' (ERR 2001:Configuration system failed to initialize) Note that other dot net apps work fine. Note that I ran "sfc /scannow" as admin and no errors were reported. I am running Vista 32 SP2 Just to add that: I get an error message, similar to 'Fiendish Dire Weasel', that flashes before the program finally crashes, after canceling the failed attempt to report the error to wizards..."something about font height". I also note that the tail end of the message is garbled square blocks, as if the message is printed from a string that contains non-printable characters. The message appears for a moment, then disappears. Character Builder Unexpected Error System.ArgumentException: Parameter is not valid at System.Drawing.Font.GetHeight(Graphics graphics) at System.Drawing.Font.GetHeight() at System.Drawing.Font.get_Height() at [],[]..ctor(, ) at .[] () at []..[](Exception, Boolean) Note the string '[]' above represents a single "box" character (maybe a null in the print string. Incident Number:090612-000400 Any help is appreciated. |
| #25fiendish_dire_weaselJun 13, 2009 0:12:51 | Having this problem as well. I can run the non-updated Demo (levels 1-3) version fine. If I try and update to the full current version I get the "Configuration system failed to initialize" error. Another error message flashes before the program finally crashes, something about font height? It doesn't stay on the screen to read it. |
| #26sidareusJun 16, 2009 14:50:27 | I'm having the same problem on my windows xp system, but so far not (crosses fingers) on my vista 32. have tried uninstall-reinstall of both CB and .NET. Getting the same results otherwise as Yarthok (have replicated his steps with identical results). |
| #27fiendish_dire_weaselJun 21, 2009 0:38:44 | So it has been over a week I have been without a Character Builder. Combined with a few weeks of useless articles, why am I paying Wizards money again? |
| #28yarthokJun 21, 2009 7:44:15 | I did this very carefully and it worked for me. |
