| #1justdanceFeb 27, 2010 18:43:57 | Hope this is the correct forum - I'm still new to all this. Joined today and thought I'd give the Character Builder a shot, but I've encountered something I can't explain... as I leveled and selected powers, it started stopping me and telling me that I couldn't select a new power until I had 'lost' a power of a similar type (encounter & daily). Essentially it wouldn't allow me to have more than three of each, though it did not seem to affect selections assigned to my spellbook or my expanded spellbook. Is some setting I'm unaware of, or am I just that clueless about the rules? |
| #2Negflar2099Feb 27, 2010 23:11:46 | What level is your character? I ask because the only thing I can think of is the rule that says that when you get to a certain level (13 I think) you have to swap out some of your old encounter powers for new more powerful powers. The thinking is that your character will never have so many powers you're overwhelmed. If that's not it then I don't know what's going on. |
| #3justdanceFeb 27, 2010 23:14:30 | You are probably going to laugh at this question and I'm embarrassed for asking it... but is it the rules that you will only have 3 encounter powers and 3 dailies at a time (not counting Paragon Path powers)? If so I never realized that and assumed you kept everything you got in a cumulative fashion... could I have actually been that dense? |
| #4fcjamisonFeb 27, 2010 23:42:15 | From the Player's Handbook, page 27: At 13th, 17th, 23rd, and 27th levels, you can replace any encounter attack power you know from your class with a new one of your new level (or an encounter attack power of a lower level, if you choose). From the Player's Handbook, page 28: At 15th, 19th, 25th, and 29th levels, you can replace any daily attack power you know from your class with a new daily attack power of your new level (or a daily attack power of a lower level, if you choose). |
| #5justdanceFeb 27, 2010 23:46:18 | I read that as meaning that you could swap out existing powers to better compliment th enew ones you had acquired, letting your character evolve from top to bottom rather than just with the most recent power. How does all of this affect your spellbook? I get a daily at level 1, and another for my spellbook and another for my expanded spellbook... when I lose the initial daily, what happens to those spells stored in the spellbook? I assume then that you keep all of your accumulated Utility powers? |
| #6fcjamisonFeb 27, 2010 23:51:28 | Player's Handbook page 158: If you replace a spell because of gaining a level or through retraining, the previous spell vanishes from your spellbook and is replaced by the new spell. Utility powers are kept throughout your career unless you retrain for a new one. |
| #7justdanceFeb 27, 2010 23:55:27 | Sorry if I'm being dense, but maybe if we use an example... Let's say I have Sleep as my level 1 Daily, Horrid Whispers in my spellbook and Acid Arrow as my extended spellbook spell. Then level 15 comes around and I drop Horrid Whispers for Ball Lightning. Do I have to switch out all three at the same time... or can I mix and match, like keep my daily spell but switch out the two in my spellbook...? |
| #8fcjamisonFeb 28, 2010 0:04:32 | Ahh...now I think I understand. The real question here is do you just get to swap out 1 power or (in the case of spellbook and expanded spellbook) 3 powers. I don't know the answer to this. Let me do some more reading and playing with the character builder. Initially, I'm thinking you just get to swap out 1 power. So in your scenario, you would simply rep;lace the old spell in the spellbook with the new spell. |
| #9fcjamisonFeb 28, 2010 1:30:00 | OK...you only get to swap out 1 power at 15th level, so drop one and select a new one. In addition, you get to chose an additional 15th level power for your spell book and one more 15th level power for your extended spellbook. |
| #10justdanceFeb 28, 2010 9:46:18 | OK...you only get to swap out 1 power at 15th level, so drop one and select a new one. So I at level 15 I would be able to cast 3 daily spells (from 1st, 5th and 9th with one of those getting swapped out for my 15th) and would have 11 total daily spells in my spellbook (those 3 as well as 1 for each of 1st, 5th, 9th and 15th from my spellbook plus 1 more for each from my extended spellbook), giving me a total of 11 to choose from? Does that sound right? |
| #11fcjamisonFeb 28, 2010 15:09:10 | Sounds about right |
| #12dmdrolkradMar 01, 2010 14:11:47 | You know it says you "can" swap out a power. What if you don't want to? Say because of the flavor or just liking the power you had. |
| #13regin_lyngsoeMar 01, 2010 15:35:23 | I would like to be able to houserule that you are not forced to exchange any powers, ie being able to keep the old and gain new ones |
| #14justdanceMar 01, 2010 21:28:13 | I would like to be able to houserule that you are not forced to exchange any powers, ie being able to keep the old and gain new ones Thats actually how I assumed it worked at first. |
| #15fcjamisonMar 02, 2010 0:44:10 | You know it says you "can" swap out a power. What if you don't want to? Say because of the flavor or just liking the power you had. Then you keep the powers you have and forego taking a new power. |
| #16justdanceMar 02, 2010 7:51:28 | You know it says you "can" swap out a power. What if you don't want to? Say because of the flavor or just liking the power you had. For some reason, in the character builder, I can't find the option that will allow that. It requires my losing a power before it will let me take a new one. I end up losing it and then re-selecting it. Still can't figure out how to work multi-classing power swap feats either. |
| #17dmdrolkradMar 02, 2010 16:42:00 | Same, I have to lose it and re-choose it. |
