| #1guangAug 21, 2008 13:09:57 | ok, so far we have Nentir Vale, Elsir Vale, Ashenport, and a growing list of smaller places. I understand that I can make up a road that'll take my players from one to the next in an afternoon's walk, but looking for something a bit more.....canon....than that. Is there anything canon connecting any of these places? At least the name of a road or river or forest or something? |
| #2ethilristAug 21, 2008 13:36:18 | The common tongue of mankind. There are roads which PCs walk down which are dangerous or not depending on the plot and whether or not they need to level up before they get to the dungeon in the next town. But, no, there's no world of Generic D&D to connect all the dots yet. |
| #3WolfStar76Aug 21, 2008 19:16:26 | The common tongue of mankind. Nor is there likely to be, from what I've read. It's been stated that the Points of Light "world" is less of a world and more of a concept. A concept for GMs to fill in as they see fit. So, really, PoL is YOUR world, with a sprinkling of their ideas to get you started. I highly doubt (though I've been wrong before, unfortunately) we'll ever see any official maps/backgrounds/plotlines. I wouldn't even be surprised if content from the magazines next year conflicts with stuff being printed this year, since (outside the SoW path) there's no focused effort (that I'm aware of) to "flesh out" PoL and avoid such conflicts. |
| #4hanexsAug 21, 2008 22:15:37 | Looks like there's no effort IN the SOW path either. |
| #5john_paul_stoddardAug 22, 2008 14:18:36 | Meaning that you have to totally scrap the World you created, and convert it to a "POL" setting. You also have to spend alot of time converting it by either change the Names or adding places to your world to match stuff in the settings. |
| #6WolfStar76Aug 22, 2008 14:24:55 | Meaning that you have to totally scrap the World you created, and convert it to a "POL" setting. Yes, you HAVE to. WotC will sue if you don't just alter their content to fit into your home campaign. You also have to spend alot of time converting it by either change the Names or adding places to your world to match stuff in the settings. Or you could run episodic adventures without continuity if you don't want to do all the legwork of running a campaign (like creating names of places, altering adventures to mesh, etc). I know you have a distaste for the magazines as currently presented, but aren't you reaching just a little here? They've just taken what used to be in Dungeon that was world-less, and setup some VERY loos guidelines around them, and called it Points of Light. |

Which is not what people are wanting to do. People are looking for Continuity in available products especially one that is suspose to be designed as such. I know you have a distaste for the magazines as currently presented, but aren't you reaching just a little here? . Presented as in, advertised and delivered slowly and or not at all? That has nothing to do with this discussion. I don't see why you brought it up, other than to start a "heated" discussion over it. They've just taken what used to be in Dungeon that was world-less, and setup some VERY loos guidelines around them, and called it Points of Light. Yea but when they started "Adventure Paths" there was continuity to the Products..Sure there has always been "generic" settings and it was up to the DM to fit them in, People are not having a problem with them. |
| #8WolfStar76Aug 22, 2008 15:02:30 | I would not be surprised if they did I'm going to assume you're kidding and take it as such. ![]() Which is not what people are wanting to do. People are looking for Continuity in available products especially one that is suspose to be designed as such. Some are, some aren't. This is D&D, there are precious few blanket statements we can apply to people's play styles. However, I've seen nothing in Dungeon, outside the SoW Adventure Path, that indicates there is supposed to be ANY continuity whatsoever. Presented as in, advertised and delivered slowly and or not at all? That has nothing to do with this discussion. I don't see why you brought it up, other than to start a "heated" discussion over it. I brought it up because you're presenting PoL which is featured primarily in the magazines as somehow forcing people to scrap their own plans, when instead PoL is designed to be used WITH one's own world. It is my opinion (and therefore it's ENTIRELY possible I'm wrong, as I can only judge based on your comments - giving me only a small peek into your mind) that you're letting your distaste for the magazines color your opinion of the PoL campaign, and the non-canonical nature of Dungeon adventures. Delivery is, indeed, another discussion entirely, and one I didn't bring up in the least. Yea but when they started "Adventure Paths" there was continuity to the Products..Sure there has always been "generic" settings and it was up to the DM to fit them in, People are not having a problem with them. There's continuity within THAT series, no more, no less. If I write a series of short stories featuring parts of "WolfStarWorld" (or even merely, "WolfStarLand" within the PoL setting)that get published in Dragon that doesn't imply that all of Dragon needs continuity with my stories, merely that my stories need continuity with each other in my series. Why would a series of adventures for dungeon suddenly imply all of PoL needs to be canonical? |
| #9john_paul_stoddardAug 22, 2008 15:46:48 | I'm going to assume you're kidding and take it as such. Just as You were, or were you being serious, about the WOTC sueing..:D I brought it up because you're presenting PoL which is featured primarily in the magazines as somehow forcing people to scrap their own plans, when instead PoL is designed to be used WITH one's own world. It is my opinion (and therefore it's ENTIRELY possible I'm wrong, as I can only judge based on your comments - giving me only a small peek into your mind) that you're letting your distaste for the magazines color your opinion of the PoL campaign, and the non-canonical nature of Dungeon adventures Actually you don't know nothing about my mind. I have repeatedly stated that my distaste is not with the content itself but with the delivery of the content itself. I have never claimed anywhere that the actual content is a problem, you seem to be putting those words somehow in my mouth. I don't have a problem with a POL campaign especially since I have been running a POL campaign basically for abut 4 years now. My comment was generic enough to understand, If you use stuff as presented it will be alot of work to adapt. As for Continuity, this discussion is based entire on Continuity of the present and Possible future releases and the Continuity of them. My comments were pointing out presently that conecting them more closely will require alot of work by the DM to do so. Delivery is, indeed, another discussion entirely, and one I didn't bring up in the least. I never said you did. I did to clairify why I have problems with the E-zines since you brought up my distaste for the E-zines. Just to clairify once again, My Dislike for the E-zines is because of deliver problems and not with the Content, except for the Lack of High Res Detailed maps. No I don't believe Every thing presented in adventures or the E-zines should be POL nor do I believe that they should be "World setting" specific. |
| #10WolfStar76Aug 22, 2008 18:36:23 | I never said you did. Really? Presented as in, advertised and delivered slowly and or not at all? That has nothing to do with this discussion. I don't see why you brought it up, other than to start a "heated" discussion over it. To each their own I guess. |
| #11john_paul_stoddardAug 22, 2008 20:16:40 | Yes you did bring up my distaste for the E-zines No you did not bring up the reasons why I don't like the E-zines Once again my distaste for the Quality and delivery has nothing to do with the Continuity issue Need any more clarification ![]() |
| #12mvincentAug 27, 2008 16:31:25 | I highly doubt (though I've been wrong before, unfortunately) we'll ever see any official maps/backgrounds/plotlines. Do the maps/backgrounds/plotlines that have been published so far for them count, or does it need to be a world map or somesuch? |
| #13WolfStar76Aug 28, 2008 5:44:03 | Do the maps/backgrounds/plotlines that have been published so far for them count, or does it need to be a world map or somesuch? Well, maps for each adventure are (semi-)necessary. I was referring to maps of entire countries or, yes, the world. I doubt we'll even see maps that link "this module" to "that module" since the idea behind PoL is that it's "your world". So if YOU have module "A" to the west of module "B" they don't want to make a map assuming that they're north-south of each other. |

That's what I've been trying to figure out. Atleast H1-H3 use the same "setting" as the adventure in the back of the DMG. ![]() |
