| #1RyokuNov 09, 2008 22:54:31 | I have a bit of constructive criticism about D&Di. I have taken to having a laptop up for my games and find the compendium very useful. But I get frustrated as all get out when I go to look something up 20 minutes after the last time I used it and I have to waste time logging in again. The compendium is supposed to be there to quickly look stuff up. Now it takes longer than to grab a book and do it manually. So please make it so I no longer have to relog on in the same window. |

It is supposed to be 30 minutes not 20, if it is 20 minutes it is a bug. On the plus side WotC is considering longer then 30 minutes. |
| #3cruelNov 10, 2008 6:52:28 | Again under the heading of constructed criticism. If the tools arn't useful, they arnt going to be used. If they arnt being used, subscribtions wont be renewed, and word of mouth buzz for the service wont be created. during my game or even during my prep time, having to re-log in every time i lean over to look something up is a waste of my time. Yes, i may spend an hour working on a map before i try to look up the area that my party's wizard can block off with his wall of ice spell. Or we may be playing with the computer behind us, open to the compendium for a quick rule verification, but my session expired, and now i have to log in again to get to it.. either way your adding time and slowing my game. encounter builder - my fervent hope is you hotlink to the monsters stats (for subscribers only of course) because again, if i have to look up the monsters anyway, and make my own sheets/stats cards whatever. Then i have no use for the encounter generator at all. and don't even start me on "download.asp", the compendium opening in a new unsigned in window (when launched from a signed in browser window) and all the other grief we are expierencing trying to navigate the insider Look, I'm a fan. I love 4E, I Love the Game. I buy all your books and I run 2 campaigns (and play in a 3rd). I defend your edition against naysayers and promote your product whenever possible. I'm just asking that you stop working against me, and start working for me a little. Make the stuff work, release it when you say you will release it, and make it useful to the people who love your game. Please and Thank you |
| #4sueilNov 10, 2008 11:21:56 | This bug's the crap out of me too. Even when using Opera, and able to just hit ctrl+enter and it will auto log me, it's annoying. I'm kinda new around here, so does anyone know the reasoning for the short time? |
| #5RyokuNov 10, 2008 17:09:46 | It is supposed to be 30 minutes not 20, if it is 20 minutes it is a bug. I was pulling a number out of my butt and I do have faith their getting stuff done. The point of this thread was mostly just to try and let them know of some negative things without it being an attack. |
| #6asmodeusloreNov 10, 2008 20:49:01 | I have to agree with the original post. The expiring login is a huge nusiance. Keep in the auto-logout after a day, if you must. But please get rid of the 30 minute logout. |
| #7crimson_lancerNov 11, 2008 1:12:27 | I seriously have to ask how DDI can be so incredibly un-intuitive and annoying to use when 4E is exactly the opposite?? ![]() |
| #8koukNov 11, 2008 13:37:20 | Yes, I find it an incredible nuisance as well. There is truly no point to it whatsoever: Are the suits afraid of someone leaving it logged on in a public library, with a line of people just waiting to get all the stuff for free? Please. Even this 2 week login for the forums is plenty bothersome enough for me, because I am fairly competent about who uses my computer and when (i.e. nobody else). |
| #9panicsNov 11, 2008 14:31:07 | I too agree that it should be set to a day long. hope they will listen ! |
| #10soliceNov 11, 2008 17:08:52 | I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that we are looking into adjusting this. I do not have specifics just yet, I just wanted to make sure to let you know that we hear you! |
| #11brainiacfiveNov 11, 2008 19:30:09 | Just to add my support for extending the login timeout. This is especially troublesome when I click on the compendium links in the new Character Builder. The page it pulls up doesn't have a login option, so i have to switch to a DDI tab, logout, login and then reload the compendium tab the Builder opened for me. Repeat each time I click the link (even just 5-10 minutes later). |
| #12Torg_SmithNov 11, 2008 19:50:50 | I use a finger print scanner for my logins. They work great for quick logins. They are cheap also. |
| #13crimson_lancerNov 11, 2008 20:36:40 | Thank you, Solice! :D:D We love hearing from you! |
| #14cruelNov 11, 2008 21:23:57 | the compendium opening in a new unsigned in window (when launched from a signed in browser window) ... bad form to quote myself? Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you.. i noticed that issue was fixed today... i did not have to log in a second time to access subscriber content in the compendium, it carried my login to the new window. happy to see progress being made, even in the little things . |
| #15tufratNov 17, 2008 19:37:42 | Also finding this annoying. Would find 1 hour less annoying and 4 hours to be completely transparent to me. |
| #16KlaumbazNov 19, 2008 2:49:21 | Gotta agree with this one, it logging me out at all, after any amount of time is VERY annoying. Please stop. Nothing worse than reading boards, finding one i want to reply to, and then i have to relog in.... And that's if gleemax isn't having brain fartz again and crashing. |
| #17WotC_CortNov 19, 2008 19:27:23 | I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that we are looking into adjusting this. I do not have specifics just yet, I just wanted to make sure to let you know that we hear you! Just a confirmation of Solice's comment, this is something we are actively looking at. The issue is finding a balance that still addresses our security concerns and an implementation that doesn't impact other systems that use the same shared back-end resources. So if we're not doing it this second doesn't mean we're not working on it, it means we're wanting to do it correctly. |
| #18nonallaNov 19, 2008 20:45:06 | What security concerns? I can think of pleanty of other sites I log into and it doesn't log me out. In fact, my Sirius Satellite Radio internet account doesn't log me out until I log off my PC. Super annoying, guys. |

Copyright material could be pirated. Leaving an open connection on a public computer. User data could be stolen or changed. The other stated concern was server load, this was something I considered more of an issue over a year ago. They however recently indicated server load was a concern to them as well. |
| #20nonallaNov 20, 2008 12:58:32 | Security concerns stated, Those are ridiculous. Anyone who wants to rip DDI stuff isn't going to hang around an internet cafe waiting for someone to leave a session up. Just like pirates who rip music don't sit around waiting for someone to leave their CD in the stereo at the gym. Pirated material comes from inside leaks or someone who actually paid and reproduced the legit copy. As for user data... require the user to re-enter their password before accessing the user control panel section of the site. You know, like every other website does. |

The problem is that no one will be able to Pirate things like the Char Builder or the Game Table, as they run FROM an Online Server WotC controls. Hence the security issues. |

Hence the security issues. I thought you had to download and install the base programs for those on your own machine, along with the latest NET framework, which is why they're Windows only. I can't see any sane operator of a cyber-cafe or other public net access facility like a public library allowing people to come in and install unknown software on their machines. The paranoia level of the current login/security issue is both high and irritating. I suspect they'll lose more money by driving away people who want to be customers but hate being treated like thieves than they save by preventing copying of their IP through such precautions. |

Hey nobody is talking about server load, the third stated point. I do not expect much of a server load from an inactive member, however am not familiar with how Net 3.5 runs. Heck my printer wants to talk to the Internet after I called HP and requested (twice) all such contacts to be disabled, Word and Excel also want to connect to the Internet even when I told my firewall not to allow it. There should not be server side keep alive if user is not kept alive. Thus there should not be much of a server load at all. As for IP protection TSR clearly had the same issue, so the idea is not new to WotC owned by Hasbro. TSR did moderate, going less extreme for a time and WotC before purchased by Hasbro clearly was. I do agree that that much control of IP really will not work IMO and a misguided step by WotC, perhaps at the direction of their overlord. Very few people will use a public computer for something like this, yes the ezines and CB need to be downloaded onto a local computer. I am not aware of any public computer that allows the downloads (except as a temp file , for example to view a PDF. *shrugs* |
| #25nonallaNov 21, 2008 7:09:55 | It's not the ezines that irritate me so much as the compendium. Last night I tried to DM by keeping all my monsters up in different tabs on my browser. Worked great if I did them all beforehand but in the middle of the game when setting up the next encounter it's another annoyance to log in again. Especially because the logins don't seem to take on the first try. >![]() What happens when we're playing with the gametable or dungeonmaker? If we don't wrap up in a half hour is it going to kick us? |

You do not get kicked out every 30 minutes, just logged out if not active every 30 minutes. The plans however did indicate everyone will be kicked at 24 hour time mark, but allowed to relogin if so desired. Dungeonmaker from time to time I DM might be inactive 30 minutes if writing a description, though that depends much on what the DM wants to describe and typing speed. |
