Do 4E monsters even have a habitat?

if I'm trying to populate a swamp and I don't have every 4e monster memorized it would be nice to have such a filter.

the monster builder seems kind of half-ass.  I wish they'd take more pride in it.

They don't.  Some things, by their fluff, seem to fit more naturally in some places than others, but there is no 'official' part of their stat block that gives a habitat.  Their attitude seems to be that if you want desert dwelling Yeti or a swamp full of fire giants, go for it.

Thus a 'habitat' filter would make no sense.

As others have stated, in 4e monsters have no official habitat, so there wouldn't be anythign for the MB to filter with.

As for it being half-assed, I'd be interested in hearing you expand on that.  As to what the program was made to do (help you make monsters) it does a bang-up job.  I would suspect that your dissatisfaction comes from it not doing something it isn't intended to do (be a Monster Manual replacement for example, thus no descriptions or knowledge check info), but I would be curious to hear what other reason make you feel that way.

How about could they add in some features that let me flag monsters with any tags I want and then filter monsters based on those tags.

Also let someone else flag monsters with tags and let me download those tags to use myself.   Thus I or someone else could create some habitat flags and then distribute them to people who wanted something like that.

I'm sure a feature that allows you to create custom flags that are sortable is possible.

As for the habitat issue.

Don't be limited by wanting to only have swamp creatures be in a swamp. Many of the creatures in the books aren't typical creatures, and there can be a wide varity of reasons why they live in a swamp, without having to have them tagged as swamps, or a particular habitat.

Don't limit your potential for a good idea, simply because someone decided they didn't need to tell you that a creature lives in a particular habitat.

Its not so much that its more, we are going into a swamp and I need some encounters.   Let me look at the swamp monsters to get a jump start one what I want.    It has always helped me personally to just start the creative process.

Whats in the Swamp

Lizardmen

Hrm what do the lizard men eat, what eats them, who do they fight what do they do.    Which of those things make interesting encounters.

Maybe they are at war with the Bullywugs including each other.     Perhaps some Aarokotta live in the trees and harrass visitors and then leave Lizardman trinkets in the aftermath so that people blame the Lizardmen hrm.

Thats just how my train of thought works.
