Haven't had any problems with the CB since beta until today. Now when I start the program it loads up and gets to the main screen then any action is greeted with a crash and the following message:

"Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt."

Any thoughts on this?

Hi Wollstonecraft,

same situation here and since quite some time. I have always send an error report, hope you did, too.

What I found out:
- It happens with the old (pre PHB2) Demo and the new Demo
- CB is trying twice to access the internet:
o First to check for updates, which doesn't hurt if done or not
o Second after launching the start screen. If you block that second access, CB starts without this error
.

I'm using IE8 (german) under XP SP3.

I just wonder what that second internet access does...

Hope it helps,
Umslop

I am also running into the same issue just recently. How are you blocking the second internet access? With a firewall?

I had the same issue so after a few days of trying out the demo, I uninstalled it. Then I saw this thread. I reinstalled it, told my firewall that under no circumstances was CharacterBuilder.exe to have any access to the internet. Its worked fine since.

Could those of you who have had, or are still having the problem post your operating system and IE browser version?

I went back through and oppened the character builder directly instead of through the launch button off the update screen and it loaded without issue.

OS: XP Home SP3

IE Version: 8.0.6001.18702

Don't know if the problem still exists, haven't taken characterbuilder.exe off my firewall's blocking list yet.

Sorry for the late reply, but I assume you got the answer from blaster219. Yes, I'm using ZoneAlarm to do so.

Issue fixed!
And sorry for the late reply to you, too. I allowed the Demo Character Builder the access to check for updates and the second one after the launch and it doesn't crash anymore. Well done and thanks a lot!

BTW: Any chance to let us know what that second internet access is good for???

The second access is simply to access the patch notes, so you do not lose any functionality by blocking this connection.

Unfortunately, it seems that the WPF browser control is a little buggy if it has any problems loading the web content and although we catch the exception that should be thrown, it seems that there are still ways in which it crashes in an uncontrolled way.

Excellent!
Even if the server is a bit shaky, with this information we know exactly what we loose by implementing the workaround / blocking the 2nd access. I can live very well with this solution.

Honestly said I was a bit worried what would happen if I subscribe and this issue not being fixed, as my subscription is primarily to be able to use the CharBuilder. Now I just wait for the 29th, so I can get the next months update as well.

Thanks a lot!
