| #1gamer_zer0Jun 24, 2008 11:23:46 | The Compendium that we have available live on D&Di right now is just a glimpse of the full-featured version that is still under development. We'd like to compile a feature request list to help us identify additional opportunities for us to improve the tool for our community. Please post your suggestions and requests here. Thanks! |
| #2SothicusJun 24, 2008 12:47:51 | I tried out the DDI compendium. It appears to be a glorified word search engine. That's fine, but it would be nice to have someway to know that a word or term found is rule related as opposed to flavor text related. Two words I tried: prone and mark Prone got me a number of feats and skill which affect becoming or getting out of the prone state. No where was the actual rule of being prone. In addition, I got the class Warlord because Warlord Tactician's flavor text is that they aid their allies by knocking opponents prone. Mark was similar to above but I also got Dwarf because "To a dwarf, it is a gift and a mark of deep respect to stand beside an ally in battle" Well that is flavor text and has nothing to do with the term "mark" in game. In addition, there isn't a listing of what being marked does. Also, the terms mark and marked are not fully interchangable. So if someone was searching for a power which was affected by a target being "marked" and used "mark" isntead that would be fine. However if the term was "mark" and they used "marked" instead, they would not find the power. It would be nice to have rule-focused words, not simply flavor text words found. And it also would be nice to have the actual rule of some of these terms, particularly for conditions. |
| #3pimpwillyJun 24, 2008 12:58:25 | Monster Stat Blocks Monster Abilities Searchabile (i.e. Goblin Tactics) Fixed PHB inconsistancies (i.e. Humans +2, not +1, to any stat) Boolean Searching Dungeon/Dragon information updated in the Database (though makes sense to hold off until the end of the month, when the entire issue is official released) Monsters Manual PC races included Ability to browse a section fixed sorting tabs (clicking once sorts ascending, second time does descending) |
| #4Keen_ManJun 24, 2008 13:39:59 | Ability to search for specific creature types within a range of levels EG Undead levels 1 to 5; Goblin level 5 to 10 Makes writing adventure materials easier |
| #5DMapleJun 24, 2008 13:42:59 | Get it up to date, keep it up to date. To that end.
*Although I'll understand if you want to delay it for a month for fear of hurting book sales. Personally I think it is more likely to act as a teaser and promote book sales. This is what I'll be keeping an eye on in the next few weeks, currently it's clear that the data doesn't match the PHB, (it has extra information that didn't reach the print release) nor does it include the errata, or stuff from Dragon magazine. If this is fixed quickly then I'll have some hopes that you have systems in place to manage a database like this, if it isn't then I'll worry (even more) about WotC trying to manage the DnDInsider project. Other improvements to the mainly Player support database you currently have (most already suggest by first poster). Boolean Searching Monsters Manual PC races included Ability to browse a section Sorting on tabs fixed. Sorting on multiple tabs (probably to much hope for ie: Class then level). Improvements to make it useful to DM's - REQUIRED. (IMHO) Monsters add by stat blocks (which will allow searching on monster abilities). Desired improvements (that I don't think we'll ever see) Glossary of terms, (Cover, Dazed, etc. etc.) Actual Rules. |
| #6DMapleJun 24, 2008 14:14:22 | You might want to post that in this thread. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1051538 Edit: Does it work now? |
| #7Nemo_the_LostJun 24, 2008 14:35:32 | Right now, when searching powers, "fighter encounter" will give you all of the encounter fighter exploits, and "fighter daily" will give you all of the daily fighter exploits, but "fighter at-will" (or "atwill", or "at will") returns nothing. I'm not sure why that is, but since the search engine is fairly simple at this point it strikes me that it might be something deep seated. I mean, "at-will" is clearly shown in those exploits' descriptions when you find them through other means, but the search engine does not recognize it as a keyword. Also, some DM support would be great. Not necessarily a encounter generator, but at the very least it would be very useful to have the encounter, experience, and treasure tables from the DMG available in a searchable fashion. As for the Monster Manual, it would be fantastic to have the ability to automatically apply +/- 5 levels to the MM stat blocks without having to do the addition or subtraction to all the necessary values ourselves. Taking that to its logical conclusion, automatic application of monster templates and the creation of NPCs could be greatly streamlined with online support. I gather that there is a sense in the community that this is only supposed to be a player's character-generation tool, but I would hope that Wizards is savvy enough to realize that if their GSL blocks the production of third-party software, they are going to torque off a lot of very busy Dungeon Masters if Wizards' proprietary tool is no help to them. Maybe we can expect to see some Dungeon Mastery support in the dungeon builder? |
| #8giantslorJun 24, 2008 14:54:31 | Links: (unless I missed it). If you mention something about another power, feat, whatever in the text, have a link to that keyword/item. Spell Check: I am a terrible speller. Please put in a google like "did you mean ...", especially for common stuff. Rogue vs. Rouge, etc... |
| #9Archus_ForixJun 24, 2008 14:57:21 | Get it up to date, keep it up to date. I second all of that. Wizards, if you are reading, you should do this. You need to come out all guns blazing and cover all of the areas. You may decide to take some things down at a later date, but get everything you can up there, stat blocks, DM compatability, glossary of terms, rules, and the Dungeon and Dragon updates. Furthermore, no delay. Get it up there as soon as it comes (so if you release a new set of paragon paladin powers in either magazine, get it up on the compendium as well). |
| #10gamer_zer0Jun 24, 2008 15:18:31 | I second all of that. Wizards, if you are reading, you should do this. We're definitely reading everything. Thanks for the feedback. It's extremely helpful that everyone has been so specific in citing what they want to see. =) |
| #11epochgamesJun 24, 2008 15:35:22 | Personally, having the ability to launch the compendium in a new window is nice, but I love me some tabs. I'd like to be able to launch this within my FireFox tabs and not have to have another window open. Also, I'd like to see an actual ToC/Index added. Sometimes, one might not be sure exactly what they're looking for and having a list to run through might jar their memory. I'm also hoping for an easier way to get there, such as an addition to the sidebar for DDi or a wholly separate link, rather than just adding the items as a favorite or some such thing. Multiple search options would be nice too. |
| #12DMapleJun 24, 2008 15:49:05 | I'm curious if the mission for the D&D Compendium is still what was advertised at the D&D Experience back at the end of February this year. Is it a "Rules Database" that will offer what Scott Rouse said was "100% content [of all published books] whether you own the analogue book or not." or has the product aims changed? If that's still the goal that would be certainly worth the subscription*, if a cut down version that is of minimal use to DM's like we are seeing now is the goal, I'm not as sure it's worth the money. Alternatively when Scott said "100% content" he could have been mistaken, sure it's 100% access to stuff needed to make the Character Builder work, but nothing else. *Although I can see why before you get the other stuff online and have a subscription up and running you might not want to give everything away for free. |
| #13DMapleJun 24, 2008 16:03:55 | Powers should appear under the powers tab. IE: Search for Elven Accuracy, only appears in the Race and the Feat tab as both mention it, but it is a Racial Power. Same with Fey Step, although you do get an entry in the Powers area that's for Misty Step which is a Fey Pact Warlock Power. Similarly there are several [Divinity] Feats that give powers, but only appear listed under feats when you search for them. Also if you could stop it searching on the flavour text, that would be useful. |
| #14fodiggJun 24, 2008 16:48:17 | All I want from this is:
That's what I want. I understand you don't want to put the whole game up there. I get that, but this is how I envision using this. The same way I use the "find" function in a PDF document, only it's all rules ever released in one place. That'd be worth my $/month. |
| #15PhobosJun 24, 2008 18:08:16 | What I feel it really needs is highlighting the search terms. I searched "cleave" and got back the power, which is short and easy to find, and fighter, which was lengthy and took me a Ctrl+F to find the word I was looking for. EDIT: The thread I posted in was merged with the current, so I removed the first two sentences as they did not apply to this thread. |
| #16taskiJun 24, 2008 18:24:29 | Also, some DM support would be great. Not necessarily a encounter generator, but at the very least it would be very useful to have the encounter, experience, and treasure tables from the DMG available in a searchable fashion. I want this stuff. An encounter generator would also be nice -- something that keeps track of the XP totals and monster levels, and can compare those to party level and number of PCs. If it could give a general idea of the difficulty of the encounter ("easy," "challenging," "impossible," etc.) relative to the party, that would be great too. ![]() Also, links within entries. When I look up Sleep, I want the word "unconscious," "(save ends)" and the keywords to link to their glossary definitions. Or maybe even show brief definitions with a mouseover. Look to d20srd.org to get an idea of the extent of cross-referencing linkage I want. This would really make it worthwhile for me, because I like to browse along tangents to familiarize myself with the rules as a whole. Another DM feature I'd like to see: an Adventure Builder. It brings your encounters (monsters and skill challenges), NPCs, locations, and plot lines together in one place: a customizable notesheet and/or flowchart thingy. This would be especially useful for planning event-based adventures. It should also be compatible with or a part of the Dungeon Builder. |
| #17notacrobatJun 24, 2008 18:44:42 | When you click on the power's tab, I'd like a column for whether a power is a daily/encounter/at-will. Skills have a class column? I understand that you want that linkage, and it'd be nice to show that linkage somehow. But showing "Arcana" many times is not the way to do it. Put the classes all in one cell. Feats have a entry called PreRequisite. Formatting error. Update the data. It seems not to be what's in the PHB, but rather an earlier version (extra build options for Rogue and Warlock?). |
| #18NyarlathotepJun 24, 2008 18:58:37 | I would like to see the power listings with a filter for keyword. Thus I can easily see, for example, how many warlock powers have the 'Fire' or 'Radiant' keyword so I know whether a feat that affects them is worth taking. And on that note, it would also be nice if I could filter things with multiple keywords and have my choice of whether they are treated as ANDs or ORs. I.e to be able to search 'Fire AND radiant' or 'Fire OR Radiant' |
| #19NyarlathotepJun 24, 2008 19:10:41 | Having things filterable by conditions they inflict would be mighty nice too. And on the same note, it would be uber kewl if when a description of a power or ability included certain terms, such as any of the keywords or conditions, one could could click on a link to a description of that keyword or condition. Or even better yet, if a box containing such a description would pop up when you hovered your mouse over it. And a pony...:P |
| #20boggitJun 24, 2008 19:16:22 | Well... Just for starters, having monsters from the MM included in the compendium seems so obvious it shouldn't even have to be mentioned. |
| #21RazzJun 24, 2008 19:35:12 | The Compendium that we have available live on D&Di right now is just a glimpse of the full-featured version that is still under development. We'd like to compile a feature request list to help us identify additional opportunities for us to improve the tool for our community. Weren't you guys supposed to add paragon paths, feats, powers, etc. into the DDI Compendium that are from Dragon and Dungeon Magazine articles? How come I don't see any of Dragon Magazine #364's new Wizard powers or the new paragon path and feat from Wolves of Maldeen on there? Not much of a compendium if you don't add ALL sources of the material. ![]() |
| #22gizmoiscariotJun 24, 2008 19:37:47 | Weren't you guys supposed to add paragon paths, feats, powers, etc. into the DDI Compendium that are from Dragon and Dungeon Magazine articles? How come I don't see any of Dragon Magazine #364's new Wizard powers or the new paragon path and feat from Wolves of Maldeen on there? They are still working on adding more information. And as far as your sig goes, are you advocating that D&D should be complicated? |
| #23pimpwillyJun 24, 2008 21:06:49 | Weren't you guys supposed to add paragon paths, feats, powers, etc. into the DDI Compendium that are from Dragon and Dungeon Magazine articles? How come I don't see any of Dragon Magazine #364's new Wizard powers or the new paragon path and feat from Wolves of Maldeen on there? It's forgivable, considering that the material is released at the end of the month in a compiled PDF. Until that PDF is released, the articles could be considered a "sneak peak" and thus wouldn't go into the compendium. |
| #24EberronknightJun 24, 2008 22:00:35 | Having things filterable by conditions they inflict would be mighty nice too. | #25hellmuteJun 24, 2008 22:19:11 | List all components of TYPE A. Click on a button and list all items for example. Remove the popup window aspect of it. I hate that crap with Gatherer as well, adn the DDM warband generator. Just let it open in a new window/tab for God's sake. Some people actualy are crazy and like full screen without have there windows non-resizeable. How about inline notation of errata? Dilettante: At 1st level, you choose an at-will power from a class different from yours. You can use that power as an encounter power. becomes... Dilettante: At 1st level, you choose a 1st-level at-will attack power from a class different from yours. You can use that power as an encounter power. Appropriate spacing: Daily- becomes.... Daily----- Where "-" = " " since the forums truncate extra spaces. Format powers so that they can print onto card sizes for people wanting to make their own power cards. Reverse lookup for z-a sorting. Set number of items to be display by page either by user, or at runtime. Add other tabs to individual entries. EXAMPLE: Search elf, get shown the races, and click on ELF to be taken to the elf entry. Rather than just having a useless Race tab displayed, also have the other tabs so that people can find the Elf specific feats from the Elf entry itself. Likewise for classes it would be click on the Warlock, and once inside the Warlock entry you have the tab for powers that takes you to the warlock powers list. Of course add any other tabs that belong so that looking up one thing doesn't require search more times just to find the other components of one thing. Of course some thing like items probably don't link directly to other things so maybe no additional tabs are needed for the Ale entry. Get rid of the entire bottom section. [HTML] |
| #26portermjJun 24, 2008 22:22:09 | A side bar/area to drag and drop results to make things easier like having rules ready for a planned encounter. Or for keeping track of an encounter being designed. Not sure if these are in the scope of the compendium or the character generator: A suite of utilities that help do the things descibed in the DM's Toolox section of the DMG: A Monster Customizer, A Monster Creator and to a much lesser extent a random dungeon and encounter generator. Also an Encounter Builder that included traps would be nice and a Skill Challenge Builder. Basically, stuff that helps you keep track of the stuff you put together preparing for a game that also helps you analyze (gauge) what you are putting together. |
| #27the_redbeardJun 24, 2008 22:50:15 | Great suggestions above (for the most part). Page Numbers Save us all a lot of time. Multiple Annotations That's something the database structure needs to be able to handle. Things, even powers, get referenced multiple times in the books. As more content gets added, I'm sure powers will and abilities will get referenced again, the Dragon may 'preview' something that gets added to a future PHB, etc. At the very least, things will get referenced in Updates - and we'll need to know about both mentions of the item! Here's a current Multiple Annotation: An active Perception check on page 186 is a standard action An active perception check on page 281 is a minor action (Of course, that is a rules item that I only HOPE AND PRAY will make it into the compendium.) |
| #28epochgamesJun 25, 2008 0:17:17 | What about allow unofficial information to be input. It could be done with a simple enough UI, and the system would need to be set up to check for duplicates, but adding unofficial content and noting it as such would be a neat idea. Sure there are wikis and such for this, but what would be the overall problem with adding it to "the" place to be for all things D&D? |
| #29pogminkyJun 25, 2008 2:08:53 | Needs to be up-to-date - really up-to-date! Needs monsters and encounter info. |
| #30hellmuteJun 25, 2008 2:30:09 | Came across another one..... At-will, encounter, daily, utilies fields/column for powers would be nice....probably better than action type or along with action type. |
| #31SothicusJun 25, 2008 11:42:36 | From my post in technical discussions: I tried out the DDI compendium. It appears to be a glorified word search engine. And it also would be nice to have the actual rule of some of these terms, particularly for conditions. ****** For that last paragraph, I spoke to my technical writer friend and she told me that it is bad form to use words within the body of text as a general word that also have a defined rule or meaning. For example, the word "mark" was used to describe Dwarven personality. That should have been avoided since "mark" has a defined rule/meaning. Now it is too late, so it would be nice to make up for it somehow in the Compendium. |
| #32SothicusJun 25, 2008 11:44:14 | Yes, I didn't see the thread until today otherwise I would have put it there. And I agree that highlighting the word would be very handy. |
| #33enigmashockJun 25, 2008 11:53:50 | Came across another one..... I came here to say this. Also, Errata, official explanations, FAQ and the like could be listed under the power, or in-line with a different color as some had suggested. I would also like to see a "bookmark" system, so if say I was mobile or at work and I needed to slap together some ideas for a player, or build an encounter, or set up a sheet to clarify rules, it would be as easy as dog-earing an entry or clicking a box or what-have-you. To expand on that, using a clipboard-like drag-and-drop space could allow for an easy encounter builder. Look up "Kobold", drag a minion into the sandbox (or clipboard, or whatever) and drop him. It could then ask you quantity, so say 10 minions. Then drag a Dragonshield, add 4 of them and a couple Skyblades. The sandbox tallies the xp and Viola! You now have a 1100xp encounter ready to print out. In the future, you could even have an ability to modify creatures, recalculate xp and save them in your own compendium space. |
| #34mountcJun 25, 2008 12:02:59 | Desired features Combat rules Monster stats Justification 1. It was what was promised as recently as the week before 4E launch. 2. To make this program useful to people other than players. 3. It will become an invaluable resource, particularly for those people who intend to use the Game Table. Quite frankly, without those two features, the Game Table becomes less desirable to use. A DM would have to have his PHB, DMG, and MM open on his lap or computer desk while running a game on the Game Table. 4. Quick search references for rules and traits like "shifty" or "grab." Those are my wishes and my reasons. This could be something more valuable than d20srd.org is for 3E if it's done right. Seriously, I'd pay for this by itself if it has all the rules and is kept up-to-date with new products. |
| #35the_almighty_onionJun 25, 2008 12:08:12 | When they get around to adding MM material to the compendium, it would be really nice to be able to have more than one item open at a time. Running a blended encounter and constantly searching for the same three MM references will get tedious, if the three could all be open at once it would be a fantastic reference. |
| #36furlugeJun 25, 2008 13:57:52 | I have similar responses to what others have said on this forum regarding adding /all/ the information in there. I've always wanted to have a compendium like this so I don't have to search and search and search through several books for rules information I need. If you can get it all in the compendium then you'll see your subscriptions. Also, one other thing you need is the ability to export data. Being able to take a series of stat blocks, rules info, etc, assemble it on some sheets of paper and print them out as a group will allow the DM to really prepare some great aids for running at their table. Without it you're really cutting down on the compendium's ability to function. We can just use Printscreen do it now, but something more functional will show WOTC's commitment to the concept. |
| #37ariochdmJun 25, 2008 14:01:17 | Whats currently on line is nice. As mentioned adding Dragon and Dungeon content. Also adding monster information and rules is what will really make it useful for me. During 3.0 and 3.5 there was a lot of looking up the rules constantly sometimes you had to correlate pieces of information on a particular rule that came from different sections of the book. So I suspect similar things will occur while playing 4e. THis is where the tool would shine for me and help speed up game play in real time. Also having eratta available and collecting the most common rules questions that come up to customer support and posting examples would be really useful. So if you had a question about prone (or a specific monters unique ability, etc), you look up the rule. You see the definition. Then maybe if your still not clear on it you click on something else and are able to look at Q&A's related to that particular rule. This would be extremley beneficial and save my players and myself lots of time dissecting/talking about the rules during game play and instead put that energy into having fun playing. These are the sorts of thing that would make me want to pay to have access to the tool. |
| #38cantrelsJun 25, 2008 14:41:28 | * Definitely need a tab for "Rules" - so that if a term like "marked", "dazed", "extended rest", etc is typed in, we can have a rules/mechanics reference, not just listings of those terms as they appear in other powers, etc. * The ability for compound searching and precise searching, such as using quotation marks for an exact string search (such as "Fey Step") or +Elf +longbow. |
| #39briskbabyJun 25, 2008 15:46:01 | -If something was mentioned it could be further referenced. -Include everything (monsters, rules, etc.) that is in the books. I basically saw the compendium being this (http://www.d20srd.org/). I'd break out the laptop and do a quick search that would yield the (rules, monsters, etc.) for situation X. |
| #40enigmashockJun 25, 2008 15:54:34 | I would like to see powers listed with Primary and secondary required stats, so I can sort them per build. For instance, A Hellock would not really care about charisma powers, but a Feylock would . . . |
| #41The_Rooster_02Jun 25, 2008 19:08:53 | I'd like to see the rules available in it. I was trying to look up OAs only to find out they are not explained. You definitely need to be able to quick search a rules reference during games with this. rooster |
| #42hellmuteJun 26, 2008 1:33:44 | For example, the word "mark" was used to describe Dwarven personality. That should have been avoided since "mark" has a defined rule/meaning. Now it is too late, so it would be nice to make up for it somehow in the Compendium. I have been saying that for a while now, but they don't understand the problem with having something meaning multiple things in their keyworded mechanics structure. |
| #43decivreJun 26, 2008 3:22:55 | The only thing I wish was that you didn't need to type a search feature. I wish it had a function where it just listed everything in the compendium, without you knowing exactly what you're looking for. Simply press the search button with nothing in the text bar and voila! Everything in the game. If that's not possible, then perhaps at least make it more like Gatherer, where you can limit your search by source (various books, dungeon, dragon), type (class, skill, feats, items), and other things like that without needing to type a specific search parameter. Having to search a specific thing very much cripples the database for player usability. |
| #44draconbitzJun 26, 2008 7:13:04 | The Search engine needs to be revamped a -lot-. I did a search for Come and Get It, and got nothing. Did other searches with 'Come' and 'Get' and did not turn up the text I -wanted- which was 'Come and Get It' If your search engine is unable to find the name of a power when it's entered in -verbatim- then your search engine is fail. Why not use something similiar to what you guys use for Gatherer, which actually works -very- well as a search engine? |
| #45DMapleJun 26, 2008 9:06:44 | Wow that is bad. I didn't realise it was that broken. A search for 'Fighter Attack 7' turns up no powers either. When I just did Fighter Attack, I got the attack powers and sure enough "Come and Get It" was there. But it didn't turn up in the search for 'Come and Get It' I thought perhaps the data was so old it had another name for the power, but no it doesn't find it. So I did some testing here is the power as listed. Come and Get It Fighter Attack 7 Search for Fighter Attack, finds it (and many others) search for Fighter Attack 7 doesn't find any powers. Search for opponents doesn't find it or anything else, okay perhaps searching on flavour text isn't used (good thing). Search for Each target must shift doesn't find any thing. Search for target must shift finds the Warlord class. Search for target shift finds 43 powers including CaGI. Search for target shift 2 finds 15 powers but not CaGI. What the heck is this database searching on? Into the Fray finds nothing Fray finds "Into the Fray" and "Weave Through the Fray" but search for Weave Through the Fray and you get nothing. Something is badly wrong with this database. |
| #46DMapleJun 26, 2008 9:40:22 | So bit more experimenting... Flipping through the fighter section I picked some more powers to try. Victorious Surge found no problem Giant's Wake no problem. Into the Fray doesn't find it, but a search for Fray turns it up. So I think maybe it ignores certain words that are very common. Like "Into" and "the". Sure enough a search for "into" or "the" turns up nothing at all. So I go back to Come and Get It. Come > Find Comeback Strike (in Powers), Fighter, a number of skills, when I look into it the actual entries it finds they don't have the word come, but comes or become or comeback, etc. Get > I'm thinking I'll get loads of hits because of "target" in fact I only get one power Close Quarters it has "gets", I get a handful of other entries and while they have target and in some cases even "get" they all have things like "gets" or "getting" a > turns up nothing, and yet e > seems to turn up everything? of> Nothing. But... Anvil of Doom finds Anvil of Doom so the presense of "of" doesn't seem to block the search like Into the Fray. the Fray > finds Into the Fray but into Fray doesn't. What is it doing? I think some words are ignored because they are common. In the case of some powers like "Come and Get It", and "All Bets are Off" it happens to be all of them. Hence they don't show up in a search at all. In some cases if you put in just one of these words it will find longer versions of them, like my search for come and get but it doesn't bother looking for the word itself. What I really can't understand is why into fray finds nothing when Fray does. It's like "into" is cancelling the whole search. Edit: Just confirmed "into" will cancel any search. Long Fall into Darkness finds nothing. Long Fall Darkness works, Long Fall works, but Fall into finds nothing. I hope they appreciate the testing I'm doing for them. Others... Pray for More gets nothing, but Pray finds Pray for More. |
| #47DragonReaderJun 26, 2008 9:40:38 | Monster Stat Blocks I would especially like to see the Monster Manual PC races included in this and also in the character generator and visualizers. Us Eberron fans may want to play a gnome or warforged. |
| #48malkav666Jun 26, 2008 11:15:01 | Ok here is my list. Ispent a good bit of time with the product checking it out, and this is what I could come up with. 1. Tabbed browser capable. make it so it opens in a new tab if thats available. I prefer to do all of my browsing within a single tab. 2. Make a newspage splash indicating the newest additions to the database, schedules for new additions, and feature upgrades. This should be what starts in the box each time the applet is launched. Right now you just have a grey space at the bottom. taht is a whol lot of wasted space that could be used for this feature. There should always be a current version listed that can be clicked to provide up to date information about what sources the database currently has in it, and what information or ommissions fromt hose sources the database contains. 3. Deploy keyword quick searches. For instance if I look up a feat, and it is a prerequyiste for another feat link it by keyword, where I can just click the keyword in my curent search to generate a second search. This would also apply to things like powers. If a power applies the slowed condition to a mob, then the term slowed should be hotlinked so I can click it and look it up on the fly. 4. Some drop down menus would be handy for popular searches. For instance drop downs for races, heroic tier feats, classes, then under that power lists for classes. This would allow you to optimize your database for commonly sought information. 5. Boolean searching. I would like to able to search more than a single term and have it perform a boolean search bring up items with either or preferably both of those terms listed. 6. Best guess searching. If you mispell a word, and it turns up 0 results, then the search engine should compare it alphanumerically to recent searches and provide another options. For example if I type faet instead of feat, the engine should pop up and ask me if I meant to type "feat" hotlinked of course. 7. I would like to see monsters and traps added to the database. 8. I would like your chracter generation applet to be tied to the data base in the form of hot links. If I want to know about a field ont he character sheet I should be able to click and get a compenium response. 9. Make sure as you design new bits of the DDI software and tools sweet that they all utilize the same window. (could maybe have a bar on the left side allowing you to switch between each. That is all. thanks for listening. love, malkav |
| #49rcuhljrJun 26, 2008 15:08:36 | Just confirmed "into" will cancel any search. Long Fall into Darkness finds nothing. Long Fall Darkness works, Long Fall works, but Fall into finds nothing. into is a SQL keyword, think they are filtering out injection attacks by removing anything sql related? That would remove into, for, and, not, and others. *edit nevermind, join returns elf. |
| #50EquinorJun 26, 2008 18:13:47 | 1. Please lose the pop-up window. 2. Try to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Right now it is downright unattractive, IMHO. Why not use the same themes as in the Players Handbook? 3. Search engine needs major help. Try doing a search for "second wind". A number of things come up but none of them is a description of the actual ability. $. Tabs, Tabs , Tabs please. |
| #51portermjJun 26, 2008 20:40:21 | I have been saying that for a while now, but they don't understand the problem with having something meaning multiple things in their keyworded mechanics structure. You could say it's a "Giant" problem. ~~~~ Also, get the team that worked this up to help with the Compendium: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/masterlist2page |
| #52mudbunnyJun 27, 2008 12:37:25 | Done. |
| #53wimpyJun 27, 2008 14:49:37 | hyper linking the documents would be nice. for example, if I'm reading about combat and I ready about flanking creates and attack of opportunity I should see both flanking and attack of opportunity underlined. Table of contents Objective 4: Focus On The Customer. If I'm reading about paladins I should be able to go on to the next class or have all the classes at the bottom of the page as a related link. |
| #54kyros_tachyusJun 27, 2008 15:03:42 | Because I haven't read the rest of the posts I'm just going to post on what I'd like to see added. 1. Rules for Conditions (Prone, Marked, Immobilized,Bloodied etc...) 2. Rules for Weapons 3. Character Creation Assistance 4. Explaining Saves, AC, and Modifiers 5. Explaining Mounted Combat 6. Monsters 7. Expanding the product: include some artwork, make it look like some actual thought was put into it... With the information from the 3 books my group and I could have set up a spreadsheet and webpage that has more information than the compendium does right now in approximately 3 days. However it wouldn't look nearly as good as you guys can MAKE it look with the finished product, so at least make it look like something other than a simple program. |
| #55bob_loblawJun 28, 2008 9:43:06 | I would love to see a glossary as part of this. I think it might be interesting to put the Dragon/Dungeon material in before it hits the website, maybe at the beginning of the month. Only put the titles in with a release date, but it could be a way to show what's coming up. Once the material is available, then have it be available in the Compendium as well. |
| #56valmorJun 28, 2008 14:55:14 | I think that the database feature has a great potential. If everyone tries to make it a little better I'm sure it'll be awesome. My two cents on upgrades: - When the results are displayed, it would be nice if the searched keyword appeared in BOLD (or Colour or Italics). - Everybody has a different screen resolution or even "panoramic screens" so it would be nice if the viewing experience could be "customized" (either automaticaly detected or manualy chosen and saved). I mean that the DB results are showed as a separate window in a column format, while some people have very wide screens and lose time scrolling down for nothin. In this aspect I think that the new PDF Dragon Magazine (and Dungeon too) are great in their new wide format. Thanks for your great work! |
| #57cedinJun 28, 2008 21:48:07 | The current word search interface is so basic that it's rarely useful. I believe that you should spend some time with groups of gamers in their home games to see how and when they need information from the books. For example, if I want to make a Warlock character, I need not only the class description, but also the powers, skills, feats, armor and weapons, etc. In the current Compendium, if I search for Warlock, this stuff is spread across multiple tabs -- no way to easily make a character. My suggestion is that you not permit the programmers to design the Compendium -- spend time with gamers who don't work for WoTC, and see how they use their books, and then design the Compendium to enhance that. |
| #58slunk731Jun 29, 2008 3:49:17 | Tear the whole thing out and replace it with a blank MediaWiki. Two weeks from now it'll be done. Then lock it down so it can't be edited. I mean, it's a pretty ugly solution, but judging by where things are now, I'm not exactly sanguine about the final product as things stand anyhow. |
| #59gamer_zer0Jul 07, 2008 20:23:25 | Thanks for the feedback. While I know that most of the folks on the D&Di team have already scoured this thread for feedback, I also included it in my weekly D&Di Community report for this week. (7/7/08) |
| #60raynard_the_blackJul 10, 2008 15:18:29 | How about adding rules to the compendium? - Action Point Usage - Aid Another - Basic Attack - Bull Rush etc... Add summaries of conditions such as: - Blinded - Dazed - Deafened - Dominated - Dying etc... Give us some crunch!!! ![]() |
| #61hellmuteJul 11, 2008 16:47:51 | D&D miniature monsters should be included in the compendium. Each set that has an equivalent RPG side of the statistics should be listed in the insider. The entries are already free to everyone for download in the form of printable stat cards, so any monster appearing in DDM and in a MM itself is really no secret or hidden information. All those monsters are free to people visting the WotC website. So whether MM itself will be included the free monsters included with DDM should be, and in inclusion to any MM included in the RC with a note that the monster is from DDM and has a corresponding miniature for those so inclined to care. Possibly even including the image of the mini for any mosnter listed that has one, for cross-promotion and for helping users of the RC to locate a mini for a monster to use in games where a physical mini is wanted. Any online minis should be shown as well for use in online games. |
| #62tomproffittJul 14, 2008 16:29:15 | I've read through this post before (and the FAQ), but I'm probably going to include some things in this post that already exist or are planned. In doing game prep I've come up with a few things I'd like to have in the Compendium. I realize that these things might be planned for the Character generator. * I want printable Character Powers to use as "cards." * Ditto for Monster "Stat Blocks." This would be huge as a DMing aid. * Ditto for Magic Items. * Also an itemized (& printable) turn sequence list similar to the one in the back of the DMG (p. 220) would be nice. If the right things are put in the Compendium it could be the most useful tool in D&Di. |
| #63redwulfeJul 17, 2008 12:42:30 | i would like to search for specific phrases like 5[w] to find out everything in the book that does 5[w] damage. right know I just get everything that has a 5 in it and it would be nice to just get the exact search. Wulfe |
| #64ifshnitJul 21, 2008 10:15:22 | Also, I'd like to see an actual ToC/Index added. Sometimes, one might not be sure exactly what they're looking for and having a list to run through might jar their memory. Seconded. A 'master list of feats' and similar features would be quite nice. |
