| #2TekiMar 15, 2011 17:13:54 | Can't wait to see it. Thanks in advance. |
| #3saitirMar 15, 2011 17:33:11 | Here's hoping its not the lobotomised version they showed us in the VT beta! Specifically, we need the copy and paste, and new monster's from the ground up, as well as full customisation and not just name chance and level slider! |
| #4highlandraiderMar 15, 2011 17:37:14 | So will the older version still be usable? Or will I be unable to access the database with that version once the online version goes live? I'm not really interested in creating monsters right now. More interested in being able to pull monsters and build cheat cards I need for running sessions. The current version works fine for me doing that. Of course, I know I'm in the minority and there are quite a few who want to be able to create monsters. I might on down the road, but I've just started GMing this edition and see no need to just yet. |
| #5CoarseDragonMar 15, 2011 17:49:11 | I hope we can still customize monsters, even if we have to save them locally. |
| #6Plaguescarred1Mar 15, 2011 19:18:00 | Thats good news here. I was in the BETA and got to test the Monster Builder and frankly to see that you will now be able to create new monsters or customize existing one is very satisfying, for this was lacking in the first stage of the Program we got to work with. You could only rename Monsters & Powers, and scale their =Level up & down. Also, the IMPORT Feature is a great addition and later the EXPORT will be much needed. I am glad to see it develop up to this stage finally. Plague |
| #7WickMar 15, 2011 20:28:33 | My concern is that same as it was with the Character Builder. If I create a monster that is really interesting and find it later in a Wizards publication I am going to be a bit peeved. |
| #8OsgoodMar 15, 2011 21:38:14 | If this is the same extremely limited tool that we saw in the beta I will be displeased (but not shocked). That MB is basically worthless to me, even the now broken offline version is far more useful--I adjust all monsters to the new damage guidelines, which I could not do in the beta. Given that they have been reasonably responsive to issues in the OCB, my hope is that we will see the same with the MB. Perhaps in 3-4 months we'll be able to apply templates, monster themes and alternate powers. |
| #9panicsMar 16, 2011 13:20:51 | I hope it will be more usable than the OCB! Currently I can't use the OCB because all my PCs have custom content and it doesn't import or crash when trying to open the character. Personnally, I'm not fond of this online thing and have only been disappointed. Hope this OMB will bring more joy! |
| #10Damon_TorMar 17, 2011 4:11:10 | *Grabs Popcorn* I can't wait... |
| #11AlphastreamMar 17, 2011 23:07:44 | So will the older version still be usable? Or will I be unable to access the database with that version once the online version goes live? I'm not really interested in creating monsters right now. More interested in being able to pull monsters and build cheat cards I need for running sessions. The current version works fine for me doing that. Of course, I know I'm in the minority and there are quite a few who want to be able to create monsters. I might on down the road, but I've just started GMing this edition and see no need to just yet. We should expect the old version to no longer be supported. If all you do is print out monsters, even the limited Beta version will do that just fine. For editing monsters, it is likely that we should expect functionality to come in over time. I have a thread capturing what we all want to see in the online MB, but it is far more realistic to expect a slow gain in functionality. |
| #12Damon_TorMar 22, 2011 10:59:22 | Today's the day guys! You ready? |
| #13AlphastreamMar 22, 2011 11:04:45 | Almost ready. I'm still backing up my RPGA monsters from the old CB. I forgot about the trigger issue and had to go back and add triggers and recharges to half the ones I had already done. That aside, I am really eager to get a new tool (even recognizing that it will be one that improves over time). |
| #14frothsofMar 22, 2011 11:23:57 | alas i got tricked into the last update thinking the triggers got fixed and lost all of the rpga monsters |
| #15whatamiMar 22, 2011 11:35:21 | Ok WOTC, you promised the new Monster builder today. so where is it? |
| #16frothsofMar 22, 2011 11:40:23 | the mb is just a speed bump on the highway to the vt |
| #17NanolatheMar 22, 2011 12:33:01 | It's up, and it's got exactly the same kind of functionality as the beta-online version. (ie very, very little) However, as the little red shiny button says, the original or "classic" Adventure Tools is still available to download for a limited time, but wont get new updates. Last chance to get a buggy, but feature rich (by comparison) monster creator everyone! |
| #18frothsofMar 22, 2011 12:51:25 | It's up, and it's got exactly the same kind of functionality as the beta-online version. (ie very, very little) can you export created monsters? im wondering if i can still use it with masterplan |
| #19whatamiMar 22, 2011 13:02:18 | I can't believe they manage to reduce the features of a product and still pretend its an upgrade. No ability to export Custom doesn't work at all (Save/save as copy don't acutally seem to do anything for me) Can't modify the description of a power, only the name/level Can't modify stats, damage or anything useful So it looks like I still have to manually enter monsters into the old MB so I can do something useful. At least I have have the new improved version open while I enter monsters into the useful unsupported version. Monsters are also missing, in particular I searched for the human wasteland raider who appears to be lost in the wasteland..... |
| #20frothsofMar 22, 2011 13:03:54 | ah no export, that makes it completely and utterly worthless to me and my campaign thanks for the info! |
| #21linusMar 22, 2011 13:07:15 | Wow. What a piece of non functional code. Aside from letting me rename things and scale levels (which Admittedly is pretty cool, so good on you for that) it doesn't DO anything. Don't call it the new monster builder when you can't build monsters with it. Modifying a couple of attributes is NOT building monsters. Come on guys. |
| #22theoucrewMar 22, 2011 13:13:19 | To be fair, it does list not being able to edit powers as a bug. So while we don't have that option yet, we should eventually. The question is really a matter of when "eventually" is. |
| #23twestermMar 22, 2011 13:15:49 | Wow. What a piece of non functional code. Wow, just noticed that. Yeah, that makes this tool pretty useless. I can't even create a completely custom monster. I really want to like this thing but, man, is there anyone there that even cares about their work? I could understand if this were free, or this were the first iteration of the Adventure Tools, or there was no beta, or if this were the first online application they released, but this is pretty embarrassing... |
| #24NanolatheMar 22, 2011 13:17:29 | Bug? Are you kidding me Crow? That right there is a "Missing Feature". The inability to build a creature in a tool that is supposed to take over from a tool that DOES, is not a bug. |
| #25LanethanAKMar 22, 2011 13:18:44 | I definitely like the "Level Slider" feature. By far the most interesting part of the product. Now give us the ability to create new monsters in the "Monster Builder" and we'll be good to go. |
| #26NanolatheMar 22, 2011 13:20:34 | Note: it's not actually called a "Monster Builder".... it's a Content Catalogue I thought we already had one of those... What was it called again? It began with a "C"... and ended in "ompendium" ... ohhhh it's on the tip of my tongue... |
| #27Dane_McArdyMar 22, 2011 13:22:01 | This is a complete waste of everyones time until you can customize it. We told them when they put this in the VT beta they can't release it like this. I really can't believe this. |
| #28linusMar 22, 2011 13:24:50 | How can you NOT believe it. What in the company's track record since switching to this new software model has given you reason to not expect them to release a barely functional, buggy application missing entire swaths of functionality? |
| #29Dane_McArdyMar 22, 2011 13:27:18 | How can you NOT believe it. What in the company's track record since switching to this new software model has given you reason to not expect them to release a barely functional, buggy application missing entire swaths of functionality? Because I thought they would finally get it, they can't keep going backwards with things, and hope they eventually get to where they used to be. But you are right, I shouldn't have thought anything good about this. Seriously WoTC, what's your problem of late? What? Did you think we wouldn't say something? We wouldn't call you on this? You did this on purpose. You knew how it would be received, and you still released it like this and that means you did it on purpose. You choose to say, Hey Customers, here, take this. Deny it. |
| #30selucidMar 22, 2011 13:30:51 | How can you NOT believe it. What in the company's track record since switching to this new software model has given you reason to not expect them to release a barely functional, buggy application missing entire swaths of functionality? I can import my customized monsters from the offline Adventure Tools, but I can't turn around and export them again? Why bother releasing a product that doesn't even have the same level of functionality as the old offline one? Seeing as the online CB isn't going to get custom rules until a full year after release, I guess we can see about the same turn around before they put the builder in Monster Builder. We could call it the Monster Slider. It does indeed have a level sliding tool. |
| #31NanolatheMar 22, 2011 13:34:41 | Found a bug already. Imported monsters lose their Name, Role, Group Role, and their level when you restart the program. ... lame |
| #32porpoiseMar 22, 2011 13:34:42 | This is certainly disappointing... |
| #33Dane_McArdyMar 22, 2011 13:36:22 | Can we change the title of this thread to; Get Ready for the New D&D Monster Builder Slider Coming Next Week. Followed by flames, flames, flames! |
| #34NanolatheMar 22, 2011 13:37:42 | Found a bug already. Imported monsters lose Name, Role, Group Role, and their level when you restart the program. ... Every single time you restart the program. I will go and weep into my tea now. |
| #35selucidMar 22, 2011 13:38:41 | Found a bug already. Imported monsters lose both their name, and their level when you restart the program. As do monsters you've level adjusted and saved a copy. |
| #36obrynMar 22, 2011 13:40:45 | I definitely like the "Level Slider" feature. By far the most interesting part of the product. It doesn't work right, though. All that does correctly is change defenses & attack rolls. Apparently it hasn't been programmed with the MM3 damage expressions. It's still advancing damage by +1/2 level, rather than +1/level (modified for brutes, AoEs, limited use, etc.) -O |
| #37NanolatheMar 22, 2011 13:43:41 | Could that have possibly been overlooked? Or do you think it was by choice? Taking all bets! |
| #38selucidMar 22, 2011 14:00:15 | I definitely like the "Level Slider" feature. By far the most interesting part of the product. I took a level 6 Monster Vault Ogre and scaled him up to level 20. The ogre does 17 avg damage at 6 which is correct according to the MV damage expressions. At level 6 it should do 2d6+7 x 1.25 = 17.5 avg damage At level 20 the Ogre brute should be doing 3d8+15 x 1.25 = 35.6 avg damage. The slider puts the level 20 Ogre at 2d10+11 = 22 avg damage. |
| #39melesMar 22, 2011 14:03:45 | What a joke. |
| #40selucidMar 22, 2011 14:13:16 | I tried to change the name of a trait and got the following error. "[WotC.ContentManagement.TooMuchScratchFault],The creator of this fault did not specify a Reason" It pretty much summed up my impressions of this program. |
| #41linusMar 22, 2011 14:14:30 | Too much scratch fault. I completely agree. |
| #42NanolatheMar 22, 2011 14:18:13 | That's just what I would have expected from a sloppy coder who has no interest in supporting the product. |
| #43TichrimoMar 22, 2011 14:18:43 | I hear you go blind if you scratch your fault too much... |
| #44Damon_TorMar 23, 2011 10:30:07 | *Grabs Popcorn* Munch munch munch... Been sick, slept all yesterday, waking up to read the forums today was a real treat, thanks WotC for living up to all my expectations. |
| #45iisaphdMar 23, 2011 11:10:41 | I can't believe they manage to reduce the features of a product and still pretend its an upgrade. I'm seeing the same thing. Tried something really simple: changing a monster to a minion in the offline tool, exported it, and tried to import. Got the following:
........................ FYI, I checked the exported XML and there is a section that is non-null. Wish I could attach the XML... |
| #46jwatteApr 02, 2011 16:29:01 | So, all of those problems are annoying, but even worse: Why does it resize to be NARROWER when I make the window taller? If I make the window wider, why doesn't the filter area and the monster description get wider? Why isn't there AT LEAST a minimum width for the monster description, that's wide enough to lay out the Initiative and Perception values on the same line as the labels? That's not even just broken: it's 100%, patently, have-they-even-tried-this-themselves DUMB! |
| #47lokiareApr 04, 2011 5:02:07 | As I've said before i don't belive WotC even has a quality department anymore... |
| #48DMapleApr 06, 2011 7:10:17 | What's the update schedule on this thing? If we are stuck with it I hope to see some very rapid improvements in it. |
| #49Damon_TorApr 08, 2011 4:16:00 | Thats good news here. I was in the BETA and got to test the Monster Builder and frankly to see that you will now be able to create new monsters or customize existing one is very satisfying, for this was lacking in the first stage of the Program we got to work with. You could only rename Monsters & Powers, and scale their =Level up & down. How'd that work out for you bro? This is a funny thread, because I saw all this coming. Hell, back when the "beta" was being tested, I said this would happen, that this is what the product would be like when it released. I got called out on it and now look at what happened? BOOSH! Monster looker-ater for teh insidors. Very entertaining. |
| #50lokiareApr 08, 2011 14:53:41 | Thats good news here. | #51kenjoonApr 12, 2011 12:41:16 | Yeah, you know they don't have a clue when the majority of their beta testers tell them not to release it because it ain't ready and they go ahead and do it anyway... I've seen this mantra repeated verbatim all over the forums. WotC has a business plan. That plan involves releasing VT to all subscribers in it's current "beta" (not arguing semantics of what state it's in, pick your own word if you don't like mine) state. WotC also has a tool that makes using the VT easier called the online monster ______ (whatever name you feel like calling it). Your assertion is that because they followed their business plan to open up the VT (and the tools to support it) that they therefore don't have a clue is specious at best. The fact that most of the VT beta testers told them not to do so is irrelavant. What has been proven without a shadow of a doubt is that WotC needs to fire their PR people and get some new ones. |
| #52Damon_TorApr 14, 2011 6:51:46 | That's fine Kenjoon, but why did they publicise it like a product release? That was dumb as Hell: they should have been lowering expectations this whole time. "This is just a shell for VTT functionality, don't get excited" would have been better than telling us to "get ready for the new D&D monster builder" I mean, come on, how bad is their PR department? |
| #53kenjoonApr 14, 2011 12:34:20 | That's fine Kenjoon, but why did they publicise it like a product release? That was dumb as Hell: they should have been lowering expectations this whole time. "This is just a shell for VTT functionality, don't get excited" would have been better than telling us to "get ready for the new D&D monster builder" Feels like an echo in here..... |
| #54lokiareApr 15, 2011 4:37:44 | Thats exactly what i was thinking. They should have told everyone exactly what it was; Just a beta for importing monsters into the VT and downplayed any other feature long before it came out. People are much more understanding when you communicate. Ideally they should have continued supporting the old MB with bug fixes and content updates, while at the same time bringing the OMB up to parity while releasing it as an alpha with "Want to make DDi better? Participate in the online MB alpha" at the same time... |
| #55Plaguescarred1Apr 15, 2011 6:21:31 | How'd that work out for you bro? I am having a real blast in the BETA with the OCB & OMB. But the missing Features are much needed for both of them and they are working on that. |
