What is the D&D Compendium?
The D&D Compendium is a browser-based utility that allows you to search for every rules element in the game. Use the Compendium's extensive filters to find exactly what you're looking for. Even if you're not a subscriber, use the D&D Compendium as a master index of D&D content. But if you're an Insider, you also get the complete rules text of each element

Is that statement still correct(copied from WoTC site) and its just not updated or is the compendium not going to be a rules compendium?

Well I didn't see the rules for the minions artificers can summon, ditto ranger beastmastery pets, and druid wildshapeing....its possibly I missed them but if so the search function needs some work. I noticed all that in the first hour of using it. Just wondering if the compendium is going to have all that stuff or I misread the website.

Check the keywords on the artificer power.  One of them should be something like Summoning, or Conjuration.  Look up those keywords in the compendium for details about how those powers work.

Conjuration: www.wizards.com/dndinsider/compendium/gl...

OK you guys got me on the wild shape(2 words), but using the conjuration and/or summoning keywords gets you a definition, a list of powers, a list of feats, etc. Not what the summoned creatures stats are, what actions it takes to control a summoned creature, etc and entering beast master(y) is pretty much the same thing.

Summoned creatures (and conjurations) dont have their own stats unless the power that summons them specifically give them.  The power tells you what actions you have to spend for the creature and what the action is.  Beast Mastery under the Ranger gives you information you need in terms of actions (you use your actions).  What the beast can do depends on what action you spend.  (powers that utilize the beast are generally standard actions unless it's a utility, in general you an use your move action to move th beast its speed, etc.).

The one thing the compendium doesn't have is the stats for beast companions.  Which it really should.

So where a ranger power with the beast keyword has a line like bite:standard blah blah blah it means you use your standard action not one from you companion, got it. Is that in the compendium somewhere?

So what about the artificer powers that talk about summoned minions? The few of those I looked at mention when its reduced to zero its not destroyed and you don't lose a healing surge, which I take to mean you normally do and its normally destroyed, where do I find that rule? Or is that something that isn't going to be included?

edit: Instead of talking about specific rules and the examples I used I am going to go back to my original question. Is D&DI Compendium a rules compendium or is that not what is intended?

For general game mechanics, the compendium is not a particularly useful source of info.  The book in which the rule is codified is the best place to find a rule.

The compendium is primarily a compendium of all the instantiation of rules.  So you can find all the possible familiars, but the rules that govern how familiars work might not be there.

So the clip from the description of the compendium is correct,just ..uhmm..politician correct. Makes sense they still want you to buy all the books.

Yes, under Beast Mastery which is listed under the Ranger class.  4th paragraph: "You and your beast companion work so well together that the creature is almost an extension of you. Using your actions in combat, you control your beast companion by issuing it commands."

So what about the artificer powers that talk about summoned minions? The normal rules for Summoned creatures are in the PHB2 on page 221, in them you normally lose a healing surge when a summoned creature is destroyed.  I suppose those detailed rules are not goign to be included as there isn't any detailed rules on any Keywords.

It is meant to be a rules compendium.  This may be an oversight, but then again, they also want you to buy their books.  So this may be on purpose.

Hmm... The Conjure keyword has the rules for how to generate the stats, basically use your own Defenses.

I'ms surprised summoning doesn't have more information.

You must have a better relationship with the compendium then I do. If I put in conjure as a keyword I get all sorts of items, powers, creatures, rituals etc...but no glossary entry and no rules on how its suppose to work.

its actually 'conjuration'

And I have a very loving and tender relationship with the compendium, thankyouverymuch.

The compendium is not intended to include all of the rules that are found in the Player's Handbook.

It is a collection of distinct elements like items and monsters.

You still need to own the rule books if you want to read a specific rule.

OK, that was the question I wanted answered. The bit from WoTC site is only mostly correct, but pretty much what I expected.
