I give up.

*throws hands in the air*

I thought I could at least ride out my subscription, but I can't take this any more. I'm abandoning ship.

*walks away*

Nah, ride out the remaining time, download everything you can get, and then walk away. Take it for everything you can get. Just don't use the character builder.

Uh?

If it's worth what you paid, use it.

If it's not, get your money back.

The only reason you would choose the "ride out" option is if you value the time involved highly.

Example:

  • You would pay $2/month for the content you're getting

  • You paid $5/month.

  • You have 3 months remaining.

It takes about fifteen minutes of total time to cancel.  (write an email.  Write a second email with different information).  If you value the time involved at more than $36/hour ($9 overpayment, 0.25 hours.  9/0.25 = 36), then it's not worth it to you to recover the "lost" money.  (the "cost" in time to cancel exceeds the "overpaid" amount.)  And then riding it out could be justified.

Me?  I valued the time involved at zero, because I believe it's in my long term interests to tell WotC that I do not like their current direction.  So my advice is "cancel, immediately.  That tells them more than not renewing"

What, exactly, is there to download at this point? if I had the old version of masterplan(I don't, I got the gimped version from after the C&D letter), it might be worth it, given that I could use traps, monsters, magic Items, etc. that are in the compendium, but other than that, I don't know that I see much value in keeping the subscription, other than the money is already spent....

I was referring to things like the magazines, etc. Grabbing data with Hero Labs. Whatever.

Look, I have no plan to use the character builder, at all. On the upside, the character builder debacle has made the magazines actually look like a bargain, so I might as well download what I can get.

Now, it depends. I have something like 7 months left, so I'm thinking I'll just ask for my money back. But if Cathak only had a month left or whatever, grab what there is to grab and then walk away. I don't care what other people will do, it was just a thought.

Actually, upon reflection, it was a sort of silly thing to suggest. I retract it, since I'm about to cancel myself. I was talking out of both sides of merdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">y mouth there - even as I was writing my initial comment I realized that I'm so over this whole thing that I really do want out.

i agree compleetly

and for the fakt that they stated they want to focus the next 1,5 -2 Years on the essential lines. (no new book for the core game, just magacine stuff) i realy see NO point what so ever to continu paying for some thing i have no intresst in and a service i dont use.

so as you say i grab all the artikels i find intressting and then walk away.

I'm out as well, at least until I see a product that doesn't make me feel like a fool in paying for it.

This email is to confirm that we have stopped automatic billing for your subscription.  Your subscription will continue to be active until the expiration date listed below.

At that time, you will have to manually renew or your subscription will be cancelled.

I didn't even realize how many Dungeon and Dragon articles I'd missed, until I started having to download them before my account expires this month...  I didn't realize, until I noticed that I hadn't downloaded an issue of anything in 8 months, how little value I was getting from those articles as opposed to the crunch aspect of them that ended up in the CB.

So I'm trying to download everything that comes out now so I don't miss out, even though history proves I never even look at the material.

I keep going back and forth.  $6 a month isn't bad, but I am so sick and tired of WotC's inability to commit to anything, and to screw up projects that are actually working as intended in favor of new ones, that I can't justify even that much money.

It's been 6 months or more since I downloaded a compiled issue of either magazine. I have looked at articles here and there - more often in the last couple months since there wasn't anything else to do with the subscription - but I never got much use out of them vs. their data.

So, in light of that (and as I mentioned above), about an hour ago I went ahead and requested immediate cancellation of my subscription and prorated refund. I was going to do the "ride it out and see where it goes" as I advised Cathak to do, but I realized that perhaps Cathak - like me - just didn't care where it went from here. I'd been on the fence about requestion a full refund anyway, but I guess I just realized that I actually did want to walk away, ASAP.

We'll see what they say. If they say "no," I'll probably just do what I initially planned to do.

Honestly, nothing in any recent magazines has grabbed me. the things I am most interested in--save my game, character class, etc. were available for free in 3rd edition. I have a hard time moving from that to an online, subscriber only magazine. it just isn't worth my money. Still, I think I may ride it out with my current subscription--probably a bit of sunk cost fallacy there, but probably more of a "it would take more effort than it's worth" laziness, combined with morbid curiosity.

Well, I will say this: Wizards customer service is pretty damn sharp. They processed the cancellation and refund already; it's a done thing. The D&D Insider Icon still lingers, but I am no longer an insider.

Hm. Right on the heels of the Virtual Tabletop announcement, too. Delicious irony, but whatever. Smile

Check out the announcements forum - they're doing a closed beta of the VTT starting today (very limited beta, invite-only), and then a broader beta with some D&D insiders. It's a 2D tabletop, looks a lot like MapTool or D20Pro with a custom UI skin. It's Java-based, has integrated voice chat. Does not integrate with the other tools at this point in its development.

well i like the artikels, some gave realy some new inspiration on backround and builds, that where not the ordanary min/maxed things you read in the forums.

also the short storrys where fun to read. but the buttom line is. the compandium is not all that usfull since you finde more diskription on the powers and weapons in the CB (its just not as easy to search) and for the artikels i'm not willing to pay 6$ even in the current exance of 0.93. its simply not worth it.

@saint-ch:
Some groups like to be able to continue playing even if one or more of their members have to relocate or are away from home for an extended time because of their job (or something like that). The "fun of D&D" you are describing is sometimes not possible for a group, and an online gaming table can help these people.

Good pun besides. Nothing in coming together to play is prevented by having an automated tool help you find and do almost all calculations for you, in fact it is leaving more time for intrapersonal interaction because you don't have to spend all that time staring at rules and lists or shuffling all those maps.

naturally you are right, but i wonder if the VT will be so flexibel with house rool and creativity and room for the DM to improvise. I highly doubt that.

Shure a VT can be usefull, but as for me, if i want to play a on a PC there are far better ways to play mulitplayer games.
