| #1fdlJul 08, 2009 0:14:01 | I keep having to login to DDI, because it doesn't seem to last at all. I'm sure the login doesn't even last half an hour. 9 out of 10 times I want to see some content, it seems as if the login has expired... Is this a bug? Is this normal and for security reasons? I use Firefox and I've never had this problem with any other login scheme, at all. |
| #2aliothefoolJul 08, 2009 5:54:28 | I think the log in only last 15 minutes by design, and it's not just Firefox-specific. You just have to keep logging in. I know, it's irritating, but that's the way it's programmed. |
| #3WolfStar76Jul 08, 2009 8:18:05 | I think the log in only last 15 minutes by design, and it's not just Firefox-specific. You just have to keep logging in. I know, it's irritating, but that's the way it's programmed. That was true at one time, but the login is up to (at least) two hours now - at least, by design. If people are seeing less than that I'd assume there's an old/stale/corrupted cookie, and recommend they purge all cookies and try again. Mudbunny might have more/better suggestions. |
| #4mudbunnyJul 08, 2009 8:28:12 | Nope, no more suggestions. What you might try is use a different briowser and see how long the session ID lasts with that browswer. I use FF, and my login lasts for about 2 hours. There may also be some poor interaction between any extensions that you have and the WotC website. For example, some .pdf plugins really, really don't like the way that WotC has their delivery of pdfs enabled. |
| #5aliothefoolJul 08, 2009 9:44:45 | Hmph, not the case with me. I get ~15 minutes out of a log in (I've never actually timed it.) I can read an article, then when I try to hit another I have to log in again. I've only been a subscriber for a couple months, so I wouldn't have an old cookie. I don't really let it bother me. It's not like I have to type my user name and password repeatedly. I just have to hit the button more times than I should have to, but it's just a minor irritant, nothing more than that. |
| #6mudbunnyJul 08, 2009 10:13:41 | If you are still getting a 15-minute logout, then I would contact WotC CS to get help. The limit should be 2 hours right now. I believe that, in the DDI Technical forum (or maybe digital D&D forum) that someone has written a greasemonkey script that will keep you logged into DDI. I have never used it, and am not vouching that it is safe and won't do bad things to your computer should you use it... |
| #7jeegenJul 16, 2009 23:46:16 | I use Google Chrome and i have the same problem. I login, find the article i want to read, read it & then i gotta log back in again. IT...REALLY...ANNOYS ME It would really be great if i could just STAY logged in. I subscribe to a few pay sites that have this figured out (such as safari.oreilly.com). It's not like i'm moving money around, or anything critical. I'm getting information on a roleplaying game. I don't see the need for this high level of security. -J |
| #8MuktarJul 18, 2009 11:46:37 | I usually get about 2hrs and I use FF. The only thing that annoys me is the stupid pdfs that autoload incorrectly and then I have to use the link to actually get it to work correctly. |
| #9RCanineJul 18, 2009 13:24:46 | The issue isn't so much with the timeout of the wizards.com log-in, it's that you: 1. See an article you wish to read 2. Log-in to read it 3. Log-in again because the log-in never "takes" the first time. The way the log-in is coded, it doesn't allow the browser to save credentials or auto-fill the form 4. Read the article 5. Click the discuss link to jump to the forums 6. Click the log-in link to log into the forums 7. Log in a third time 8. Post your thoughts. 9. Get distracted, come back a few hours later. Your log-in has expired, go to step 1 It's maddening. It's one of the worst user experiences I've seen for logging into a Web site. However, it's probably a huge architectural change to fix it, so I wouldn't expect anything soon. |
| #10celticmuttJul 18, 2009 18:10:48 | There is a far more serious issue with using Firefox on DDi pages than the login time length - having Bork! text installed screws up the login page so you can't log in period. I have to disable Bork text to be able to log in. ![]() . . . . . . . . . . Ok, it's a minor issue, but still. :P |
| #11fdlJul 19, 2009 2:32:09 | The issue isn't so much with the timeout of the wizards.com log-in, it's that you: Yes, it's definitely VERY annoying the way it's been setup. I've never had this kind of complications with any other community before... :s It seriously makes me think twice before I access to the content I paid for if it' for minor things... IT'S THAT BAD. In any given browsing visit to the WotC site, including DDI, I will end up punching my login around 3 times... And, I might be wrong, but I do think that entering your login a lot of times can be more of a security risk than making the cookies last way more. |
| #12PinkRoseJul 19, 2009 10:30:13 | Same problem here. It never stays logged in using Firefox. And right now, I can't even log in using Firefox. (Have to use IE to post that I can't use FireFox) |
| #13MuktarJul 19, 2009 12:14:22 | What addons are you using in FF? Except for the double login on the main page, I haven't had any problems with staying logged in. |
| #14lokiareJul 19, 2009 19:10:41 | Just like to chime in that I have the same problem. I can be logged in one one tab, then right-click a link and say "open in another tab" and it shows me being logged out. |
| #15fdlJul 31, 2009 0:29:28 | This is getting ridiculous. I went to download both magazines, logged in to get one, and after I saved it, I went back to the link to get me the other, and I had to enter my login again... Majorly annoyed. |
| #16MuktarJul 31, 2009 15:22:04 | This is getting ridiculous. I went to download both magazines, logged in to get one, and after I saved it, I went back to the link to get me the other, and I had to enter my login again... Majorly annoyed. There is something wrong with your FF then or one of the addons with your FF. I have yet to see the problems that you have. |
| #17lokiareAug 01, 2009 15:29:09 | Actually I have the same problem. Here are my list of plug-ins: 2007 Microsoft Office system Adobe Acrobat BitTorrent DNA Plug-in GameTap Web Player GameTap Web Updater IE Tab Plug-in Java(TM) Platform SE 6 u12 (binary) Java(TM) Platform SE 6 u13 (binary) Java(TM) Platform SE 6 u13 (netscape DLL helper) Microsoft Office Live Plug-in for firefox Microsoft Windows media Player Firefox Plugin Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin support Mozilla Default plug-in Quicktime plug-in 6.0 RealPlayer Version Plugin RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-in(32-bit) Shockwave Flash Shockwave for Direct Silverlight Plug-in Turner Media Plugin 1.0.0.10 TVU Web Player for Firefox Windows Live(r) Photo Gallery Windows Presentation Foundation !Yahoo Application State Plugin (disabled) Does anyone else having problems logging in have any of these plug-ins? |
| #18BarmpAug 02, 2009 1:28:21 | Actually I have the same problem. I've never seen so many plugins... I would not be surprised if something in there was giving you grief. Listing your extensions could also help a great deal. For instance I can't even browse the main site with noscript blocking the wizards domain - there are surely some greasemonkey scripts that will interfere with your ability to browse the site as well. Lastly, tho I doubt this will be a big issue, check your privacy settings (Options>Privacy) to see if you've set Firefox to not remember your history (or possibly not accept cookies with a custom history setting). |
| #19lokiareAug 02, 2009 17:29:38 | I've never seen so many plugins... I would not be surprised if something in there was giving you grief. I've already done that. Its not a history or privacy setting issue. I've also cleared my cache and cookies. I'll list my other stuff: Extensions: AVG Safe Search 8.5 DNA 1.0.0.1 (disabled) GameTap 4.0.80.158 IE Tab 1.5.20090525 Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.1 Skype extension for Firefox 2.2.0.87 TVU Web Player 2,4,6,1 Themes: Aquatint Black Gloss 3.0.2 Default 3.0.12 That's about everything I can tell you except I'm using Firefox Version 3.012 on Vista Ultimate. |
| #20Calestin_KethalAug 02, 2009 19:12:53 | Normally I don't have any problems at all. But today, I can't stay logged in with Firefox or IE 8. Only basic addons for IE8. Firefox has Adbock, Micrsoft Net framework assistant, no script. Edit: NM, fixt! |
| #21Sans_SerifAug 02, 2009 19:24:47 | have to admit, I have the same problem. Only add-ons are foxytunes, forecastfox enhanced, and gmail manager. Same problem before I installed add-ons, too. |
| #22lokiareAug 02, 2009 23:16:46 | have to admit, I have the same problem. Only add-ons are foxytunes, forecastfox enhanced, and gmail manager. What about extensions? do you have any of the same extensions? |
| #23BarmpAug 03, 2009 12:15:10 | add a -p to the very end of your shortcut for Firefox, and try creating a new profile to see if you have the same issues. It's likely your plugins will all still be installed, but your addons and preferences will have changed. See if you have the same issues with staying logged in. Or try a different browser, chrome or IE lets say, and see if you have the same issues. If you have the same issues for all browsers, it's likely a network problem of some sort. Either you're NAT'd by your provider (Wireless providers do this sometimes), you get a new IP address frequently (dialup? Odd broadband provider), perhaps you're using a proxy or annonymizer... |
| #24lokiareAug 03, 2009 13:14:52 | add a -p to the very end of your shortcut for Firefox, and try creating a new profile to see if you have the same issues. It's likely your plugins will all still be installed, but your addons and preferences will have changed. See if you have the same issues with staying logged in. I have a router between me and my provider, but the other stuff doesn't matter. It does it in IE 8 also. I also only have problems with this website. Yahoo, hotmail, and any other site keeps me logged in. It is purely the WotC website that has the problem. |
| #25BarmpAug 04, 2009 7:43:30 | The vbul sessions system works for (literally) millions of people. Those with issues are the vocal minority, and it stands to reason that the issue resides on their end. Here's an example: This forum logs me out more frequently than some, because I tend to browse both from work and at home (and a number of mobile locations) on multiple machines. Obviously the issue isn't with vbul, it's with my utilization of the forums. "Yahoo, Hotmail, many other sites" do not use the same type of sessions system as vbul, in many cases they are far less secure but easier on the users. Heck, I frequent some sites that authenticate me via cookie and never, ever log me out regardless of which computer/location I use. I don't pretend that's better, only slightly less annoying. And NAT'd by your provider is not the same as using a router. Any slightly modern router on default configuration will not give you any issues, tho a misconfigured router will give you plenty. |
| #26lokiareAug 04, 2009 11:00:07 | The vbul sessions system works for (literally) millions of people. Those with issues are the vocal minority, and it stands to reason that the issue resides on their end. How would I go about seeing if my provider is NATing me? How do I go about telling them to quit because a single website has problems with it? |
| #27BarmpAug 04, 2009 18:50:14 | How would I go about seeing if my provider is NATing me? How do I go about telling them to quit because a single website has problems with it? If you're provider NATs you you're routers wan address should be a local only range. Like 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, 172.168.x.x or something of that nature. It's to condense many potential internet connections down to a few available addresses and is used all the time in local networks simply because not every machine NEEDS an internet routeable IP address - which also happen to be in short supply. You can't ask them to stop, if you signed up for their service and this is what they provide you either move to another or deal with it. NAT'ing clients is the only feasible way to provide access to some areas. I've heard of a number of providers doing this, mostly wireless providers in my experience, but it's a possibility until you rule it out. It's more likely that you're address is quite dynamic, with short and often changing IP leases, to be honest - you can also find that information in your routers detailed WAN address report. If you really want to get to the root of the issue, and eliminate your machine as a possibility download an Ubuntu live cd (a linux distribution) and boot with that. A live cd won't install anything on your computer, and you can't really harm anything if you read what you're doing (from your previous posts, I'll just warn you to be careful), but it will run a completely different OS and fresh installation you can use to connect to the site. If you can replicate the issue under those conditions (without rebooting) it's obviously not your configuration and is something most likely outside of your machine. If you can't replicate the condition, it's obviously your configuration. |
| #28aliothefoolAug 04, 2009 19:51:02 | Does the main site use the same VBulletin log in software as the forums? I wasn't aware of that. That would actually make it more intriguing, considering I never have the logged out problem on the forums (just the standard log-in every two weeks per machine) whereas the problem is intermittent on the main site. |
| #29fdlAug 04, 2009 22:43:07 | Does the main site use the same VBulletin log in software as the forums? I wasn't aware of that. Actually yes, there's no problem for me either with the forums, just with the page and the DDI login. |
| #30artoomisAug 05, 2009 10:08:37 | Actually yes, there's no problem for me either with the forums, just with the page and the DDI login. I can no longer log in at all to D&Di on my PC with IE8 (in either IE8 or compatibility mode), but my other PC with IE6 logs in just fine. Also, I can log in to the forums with either PC. Very odd... |
| #31BarmpAug 05, 2009 12:17:07 | No, vbul is running on the gleemax domain. It's a seperate login system entirely, which has been a complaint of other threads actually ;). They are unlinked by design, and being that they are spanned over different domains it would be (TMK) impossible to maintain the session between the main site and forums anyway. Also, the main DDI site will not keep you logged in for long - also by design - but some people were talking about 2-3 minute login durations which is an issue. IIRC it will log you out after 15-30 minutes. |
| #32mudbunnyAug 05, 2009 12:23:27 | The current logout timer for the DDI site is, IIRC, 1 or 2 hours. |
| #33fdlAug 05, 2009 14:06:23 | Okay, so no one know for sure. Could we get some straight technical facts about this, maybe? |
| #34lokiareAug 05, 2009 14:43:34 | I wonder if anyone has actually reported this to the technical support people? When they do the redesign I'm hoping that they will put the whole website back on one server and use a single log-in for chat, message boards, and DDI. That way they can deal with it easier. |
| #35BarmpAug 05, 2009 22:56:08 | The current logout timer for the DDI site is, IIRC, 1 or 2 hours. I stand corrected. |
| #36aliothefoolAug 06, 2009 5:28:53 | I haven't reported anything. I get nowhere near 1 to 2 hours on a login, but I don't worry about it. It's not a big deal to me to just hit the login button again (my user name and password stay in the boxes, so I don't have to retype.) It's a minor annoyance, not anything that gets under my skin. |
