Actually, it's via a remote desktop app. You're not actually running them on your ipad, you're running them on your computer and streaming the results to the ipad. After experimenting with one of them (I'm a little hesitant to give an endorsement without more testing) I've been pretty impressed. The Virtual Table was completely functional, in all capabilities. I haven't specifically tested the Builder yet, but I can't imagine it would be any different. One interesting feature is the ability to connect to your computer via the internet. That alone gives me some pause as far as security concerns, but if it can be done securely then you'd be able to use an ipad at the table for the Builder even if you're not at home. All in all it's promising, and is a decent enough workaround that gets me what I want (tools on ipad) without waiting for a dedicated app to be developed by WotC. Potential applications I'm considering is using it as a DM screen for my local game, with one computer connected to the ipad as DM on the VT, and one of my friends connected through another computer that's hooked up to my TV to serve as the tabletop. Use of the actual character import and VT features is optional - even if it were just moving around tokens with no stats, it would provide a convenient means to hide/reveal monsters and areas without having to deal with a stack of map printouts as we're currently doing. Alternatively, I'm considering using a VT session not connected to anyone as a character sheet, using it for power/hitpoint/condition tracking, dice rolls, etc. I'm definitely intrigued, and I think the potential for this to be awesome is rather high. |
