May 30, 2009 22:08:24 Hey guys, I'm considering getting a subscription for the betterment of my game group. Just had a few questions for ya:

Character Builder:
1) Can I download and use it on multiple computers? I have a laptop and a desktop.
2) Do I have to be logged in to use the Character Builder?
3) If I end my subscription, will I still have access to the CB with the last updates that I'd downloaded?
4) Can I send levelled up characters to people without a subscription so that they can print their own characters out? Or do I have to suck up the ink bill on that?

1. Each month, you can download up to 5 updates, so you can install on up to 5 machines.

2. You have to log in to get updates, but general usage can be done offline.

3. A current subscription is needed to update, but there's no time bomb that disables the program once your subscription expires.

4. I don't know if the character sheet viewer demo program can open higher level characters or not, so maybe. That said, you can always print to pdf via cutepdf or another pdf printer (or ask your group for ink money). Then the pdfs cn be emailed.

Yep. You can download and install the Character Builder with all updates as many as five times per month with a subscription.

Nope. You only need to be logged in to download updates to the Character Builder.

Yes.
4) Can I send levelled up characters to people without a subscription so that they can print their own characters out? Or do I have to suck up the ink bill on that?

I'm not sure whether you can view leveled-up characters on a demo version of the Character Builder.

But what you absolutely can do is convert those leveled-up characters into PDF files (using a PDF printer plug-in like CutePDF and send those to your friends to print out. It works just as well, and better since they don't need the Character Builder demo to view and print them.

There is no objection to have on desk top and laptop. Does anyone still have a desk top, I have had towers for a few years and not on my desk?

There was also a post that if 5 downloads did not work per month a request for more updates could be made of CustServ. I have never seen any complain about not getting more downloads, however it strikes me as unlikely any would require 5 download updates to install on two boxes.

May 31, 2009 11:40:54 Excellent guys. Thanks for the answers. I was tempted to get a year's subscription to Insider for access to the CB. But it probably makes more sense, as some have seen, to simply get monthly access whenever useful updates are released. I have little to no interest in Dungeon/Dragon, and the Compendium at large. But I really like the CB. Seems two to three updates a year should be more than sufficient to cover my needs.

You would think that...but in my own case, I have four computers that I use for game-related purposes. Among those, one of those is a dual boot with different Windows versions, which makes it count as two separate systems as far as CB is concerned (I suppose I could see if I can do something about that, but I never got around to it). So in other words, to have the freedom to use Character Builder like I need to, that's five installations (truth be told I am only using four of these, but I will be installing on the other computer eventually).

For most people, a single install is fine. But some of us will eat right through licenses...
