DDI worth a shot?

Jan 08, 2012 23:07:34 I have been wanting to get into D&D for a while now and can't find people in my area to play. I was told something about a DDI Tabletop thing where you could supposedly find games. Can someone point me to more info about this?
Is DDI the way to go for someone on a budget and can't afford a ton of books?

Jan 09, 2012 8:43:09 I haven't got a lot of experience with the VTT, so I can't speak to that part of your question.

With DDI you rent access to the rules elements from the books, rather than owning them. This means that it is generally cheaper overall to be able to access rules elements such as classes, monsters, etc. However, DDI does not provide you with the "fluff" from the books so if you are wanting story elements and such you may need to invest in some of the books.

Generally, my approach has been to use DDI for the class/character options and spend book money on DM and setting related books.

One thing you should be aware of is that WotC just announced that they are developing a new edition of D&D. It is unclear at this time what this means to the future availability of any of the content that you are "renting" through DDI and whether it will continue to be available down the road. If you care about being able to access in the future some of the content you have access to now, then you might consider waiting to see how things shake out before signing up for the long haul.

the vt is a good way to play and yes it is good for players w a budget but with them annoucing 5e i cant really sit here and tell you it will continue to be a good deal for a 4e player bc we dont know. they claim the tools will stay up but its wait and see as for how long

i don't want to commit beyond a month for now till i find out if i can find games and such
