DDI: Why am I forced to take a refund, when I want an extension?

Cheers to whom it may concern,

September was a month I paid for DDI service, and didn't receive that service. I'd like my account to be extended by that month. I don't want a refund.

If refund is the only option, refund my full year. Yes, that is extreme, it's not what I want.

I don't want a refund, I'd like the month of service I paid for please. Why isn't this possible?

Thank you,

CaBaNa

Keep in mind that you still got your previous month of service.  The magazines, access to the compendium, etc.

There's more to DDI than just updates to the CB.

I *absolutely* agree that extensions should be an option, but it's not a path WotC is prepared to offer - for whatever reason (technical?  policy-based?  Don't know.)

The compendium wasn't updated (won't be until 12th), the CB wasn't updated (won't be until the 12th), Dragon/Dungeon is only a portion of what I pay for, and the smallest portion at that.

I paid for a service, a large portion of that service was not received.

End of story.

I'd like the month of service to be added to my account.

If that isn't possible, I want to know why.

You may want to ask customer service why they can't do an extension.
If you get an answer, please do let us know.

For now, the best guess we've heard is that the billing is done by a third-party, who doesn't offer an extension option, so Wizards is limited by what the third-party can do.

And the EULA states that updates may not happen

You still had access to the Compendium - and just as you say those tools are only a portion of what you pay for, so too is the CB/MB.

It may well be that WotC doesn't want extend people a full month, when only a portion of their service wasn't updated (again, with an update that isn't guaranteed, per the small print).

I can only speculate.

If I were to guess - I'd assume that it's a technical issue somewhere that's keeping them from being able to extend subscriptions.  Probably an issue with Digital River and their own accounting system.  But again - that's PURE speculation.

What you pay for is what WoTC agrees to give you, in the fine print you scrolled through and clicked "I Agree" to before ever giving them money. It says that you are not guaranteed updates to the Character Builder, Compendium, or anything else for that matter.

In the end, you got exactly what you agreed upon and payed for. There's no reason you should receive an extension. If they wanted to, they could say that you're not even getting a refund, and there's nothing you can do about it because you agreed to those terms.

The way I see it, you've got two options: Take what they give you and be happy you got anything, or cancel your subscription and stop paying for something you're not guaranteed to receive.

No matter what you do, I'd suggest carefully reading the fine print for every agreement you enter into. The twenty minutes it takes to comb through it all before paying will save you hours of arguing with customer service representatives later.

@WolfStar76, Your answer is frustrating, and disappointing.

@AsmodeusLore, I will ask customer service, when is the best time to call?

@Johny0, Your answer is frustrating, and disappointing.

If this is really what is going on, I am canceling my service.

I well and truly have no idea.  I always just use email, so I don't have to wait on hold.

I actually have done this, going through the proper channels. I'm waiting for the bad news, which I hope I don't get.

Wolfstar76 and Johny0, you're just repeating "policy" and making excuses for them. That does not help anyone. I'm sure as heck not going to stand idle and watch my money disappear without a fight. Much less say nothing at all. Some of us are hoping that WotC does the right thing, it has happened before. Other companies do the right thing all the time, and the right thing is giving us what we paid for, giving us our money back or some kind of consolation. All those "other things" like access to Dragon and Dungeon material are what is considered Value Added Services. That leaves the Compendium, Monster Builder and Character Builder - which are all OUTDATED or BROKEN. Those things are the meat of the DDi subscription and something a lot of us feel cheated about.

So what the original poster is asking for should be something easier than a refund, an extension. Which is what I want too.

And apparently its too much work to let the autorenewal extend? Or to just buy another month? A refund of your money is better because you can decide if you want the service or to take you money. Ok I will agree the choice of an extension would be nice but with it missing is there some major inconvenience occurring?

Lightening up on the VOLUNTEER community managers guys sheesh. Its not like they can barge into the CEO of Hasbro's office and demand answers.

This thread is frustrating and disappointing.

CaBaNa: please let us know their answer once you get it. I'm also quite interested, even if my subscription ends next year.

Again maybe we can talk the powers that be into offering coupons that would make the difference from what is refunded to a monthly subscription?

I know when I pay for a year there is a place to put a coupon code in...

If my account ended in September and I need to pay for the update I should have gotten in September does that mean I pay the monthly break down that I had when I subscribed (and is what they will refund me) or do I pay full price for a month?

If I have to pay full price for whenever they decide that they'll do an update, do I have the right to grumble that I have to shell out the extra cash for one month? Or should I just do what I'm told like a happy little prole?

What's easier? Fighting for a refund or requesting an extension? The burden is on me, regardless. So, as the victim here, I'm expressing my concerns and voicing my opinion, period. I'm the one being cheated, not WotC. So when someone, volunteer or not,  defends them I will bark back. It's not personal, and a well trained employee or volunteer should understand that.

I'm frustrated and upset. And if WotC did the right thing in the first place none of this would be happening. Mistakes happen, I understand that, and I have been patient. But there has been ample time to fix the problem, TWO MONTHS. And with two more books due in TWO WEEKS, the problems are only piling up.

I don't want my money back, I just want what I payed for.

But thats not how it is. The refund is already there as the OP stated. There is no fighting the good fight for the victims and orphans of the world. How in the world are you being cheated? Cheating would be if they did nothing at all to fix the problem. They are giving your money back for a failed delivery. They cannot go back in time and give you the September update. its October!
You describe yourself as a victim of course its personal.

You paid for a service that you did not receive and you were given back what you paid. At that point you have no actual damages done. It would be great if wotc could actually meet their deadlines I certainly am no defender of that. But barring that they did the next best thing. They gave people their money back.

Just be polite.

Something as simple as this would probably do.

"I'm upset by the lack of an update in September. I know refunds are being offered, but I would prefer an extension to my subscription instead.  Is there some reason why I cannot have an extension?

Sincerely,
(your name)"

I'll get back to you when I either 1. Get a refund. 2. Get what I payed for. 3. Get an extension.

So far I have nothing. NOTHING. That's why I feel cheated. If I can't express my disappointment on this discussion forum, then where should I do it? I've already made my request with customer service. I HAVE been civil, for several months now. Now I'm angry. In regards to taking things personal, I was talking about the post where I addressed Johny0 and Wolfstar76 personally. THEY shouldn't take my frustration personally, because it isn't their fault. But I did address them by name, so I can see if they did. You, Rhianni32, who I'm addressing by name now are the one who told us to "lightening up (sic)" on them, and that's what I'm referring too.

I'm not trying to attack any individuals on this forum when I address them by name, but I am pointing out the individuals who say something in particular that I disagree with instead of blanket statements that can get taken out of context.

I can tell that I'm coming off as the a-hole here, I apologize.  I'm done, I'm sorry if I crossed any lines. I needed to say my piece. Since that's done, I'm out.

Our customer service spoke to us about this and this what they had to say:

"Our security system that verifies if you should be able to access DDI stuff doesn’t communicate with the system that handles money and subscription timelines in such a way that it allows for subscription extensions.  Refunds are the best we can do."

Hopefully that clears things up.

Is it possible for the system to issue vouchers, coupons or credit, that are the equivalent to a 1-month subscription ($9.95). Because a refund of $5.95 (or $7.95) per month isn't going to cover it. For example, I'm requesting 2 months because that's how many months the updates are delayed and I've already payed for them. My subscription runs out in 2 weeks, but I would like to stick around until those updates come around. But I don't want to pay the addition $4 per month that I will have to in order to do that. And I'm sure as heLL not going to subscribe for another 3, much-less a year to find out. I think it's a fair request, and seeing that when you order a subscription, of any length, you're issued a code that is redeemed to your account.

If the system is so strict (which I don't see why it is) then how about a refund in the form of a 3-month subscription? Since that is one of the options.

I am not sure. I know nothing about the system and was just passing off the information given to me. Again, I would call our customer service to get your answers.

Definitely get upset RD. I know I would be pissed if I was still a subscriber. Just keep in mind who is responsible and deserves it.

@Microbless, thanks for the news, even if that news is frustrating and disappointing.

@Rhianni32, this thread is frustrating and disappointing, you are correct.

@AsmodeusLore, thanks for the suggested wording, I think you're spot on with it. However at this point, I've spoken with many customer service agents, and devoted more of my RL time to this than I'd like. I'm taking Microbless' answer and calling this done.

I won't be applying for a refund, I pay with gift cards, so the auto-renew option doesn't overdraft my accounts. I buy the gift card for the exact amount of a year subscription, and then after payment confirmation, shred the card. Have done this since day 1 of DDI.

So a refund does absolutely nothing for me, and I still feel like I've been bait and switched. Yes, the fine print said this and that, but the company tempted me with much more. Tools that never arrived, updates that stopped arriving, tools that keep being announced and never arrive...

Not that it matters, as the card is empty and it couldn't auto-renew anyway, but I turned my auto-renew off.  The reason being, I'd like the accounting at WoTC to notice the lack of auto-renewal for my account.

From here on out, if some update is amazing and worth the money, I'll buy 1 month.

Thanks to all the volunteers and others who helped me come to this resolution! I know I'm not the most pleasant to deal with, so your patience is much appreciated.
