| #1Talaeden_DenthiirJul 07, 2011 14:04:09 | Here's a letter I sent to WotC months ago with nary a reply:
Dear WotC, Please Help me out here. I've been a loyal customer since DDi began and a member since 06/28/03. I've helped to introduce hundreds of people to D&D over the years from NY to PA to WI to Arkansas to Spain through Game Days, Delve Nights, LFR, and Encounters as well as Home Games. I've constantly defended your company and the people that I've met over the years that work for your company. All I ask is that you deliver what you say you are going to deliver when you are gonna deliver it and a little bit of respect. I haven't gotten either from you since August. It's getting to the point of absurdity including but not limited to: 1) No Dungeon Adventures in january from Dungeon Magazine. 2) Hardly any paid subscriber Dragon material in Dragon Magazine. 3) And this is a big one, the aburdity of the "Monster Builder" case in point you first sent me this email: Dear D&D Insider™ Subscriber, On March 22, Wizards of the Coast will begin rolling out the new web-based Adventure Tools for D&D Insider, starting with the launch of the brand new D&D Monster Builder. Creating new monsters, customizing existing ones and building your adventures will be easier than ever before. On launch day, just log in to your D&D Insider account, click on the Adventure Tools button and give the new Monster Builder a try.
Here are some additional highlights:
· New Design: Completely redesigned, the new Monster Builder will debut with 3,700 monsters - including Dark Sun Creature Catalog and Monster Vault entries. · No Download: The Monster Builder is served from the D&D site · PC and Mac Compatible: Requires an Internet connection and Silverlight plug-in · Import Function: You can easily import your content created in the previous version to the new version · Save Functionality: All content you create is saved to our database and is accessible through your D&D Insider account then you sent me this email after Adventure Tools went live: Dear D&D Insider™ Subscriber, Today , Wizards of the Coast launched the brand new D&D Monster Builder as part of the new web-based Adventure Tools suite for D&D Insider.
You can check out the new tool right now and explore all the latest monsters. Just log in to your D&D Insider account, click on the Adventure Tools button and get started! Here are some additional highlights:

Friendship is based on trust, so after this fiasco, now you have to earn it. What will it take? Well for a start: 1) A full refund of the months of: Jan, Feb, March. 2) WotC as a Comapny 'Walking the Talk'. IE, you say something, especially when you promise something, you do it. 3) Acceptance into the VT Beta. Please Help me to renew my trust in you, Sincerely, "Teo" Timoteo James Delgado AKA Talaeden_Denthiir on the WotC Message Boards
Well, months later, no reply from WoTc or any refunds and all i get is invited to the VTT beta which isn't anything special 'cuz everyone who wasn't invited before got invited when i did. Then as a further slap in the face it seems like the WoTC haters got invited to appease them. Still no marketable improvement. i mean, yeah CB is updated but is usually late due to their latest excuse and when they add something they usually mess something up. VTT Beta is a joke because I see NO changes since I joined or any indication that are comments are valued. The anniversary issue of Dragon was a joke because it seems like all we payed for was Designer comments of nostalgia. Dungeon doesn't have a lick of content. Nostalgia articles served to bring home that fact that adventures used to be at least 1 each of Heroic/Paragon/Epic. Speaking of Dragon/Dungeon be sure to tell Chris Thomasson/Chris Youngs a big thank you for my Adventure being in a state of email tag limbo since 3e FR and dead silence since Steve Winter got his job.
Maybe if I whinned instead of supporting you I wouldn't be typing this, yeah that's encouraging! Well if it's the only thing that works, I.E. you respond graciously to negative comments instead of positive ones, then hear our cries!!!!!!
PLEASE for the love of all that is good in this world and all others make this up to par with the offline tools a reality sooner rather than later!
As it looks now, my players and i from 3 states, 6 game stores and 5 home games are letting their subs run out this month and the next two.
We love the idea but not the implementation. None of us likes paying for less content or for BETA Testing.
We have FAITH in you WotC.
Please let our faith be JUSTIFIED.
Because as of now it's goodbye until you get your act together from all of us.

| #3obrynJul 07, 2011 14:10:15 | That's odd. I think WotC has been on an upswing since December/January. Certainly the DDI content has improved.
I also like the beta test stuff.
Sorry to hear that you're not happy with it at the moment, though.

| #4AwesomologistJul 07, 2011 14:46:03 | DDI hasn't been worth it since last September when they didn't bother updating their new campaign world release (Dark Sun), switched to the online CB (great idea, horrible implementation), and the articles mostly sucked as content dried up. Folks who complained got their refunds back then, not sure why you wouldn't now if they still aren't meeting expecations. |

Well, it really couldn't get much worse. It's very entertaining that people are singing the praises of a month that included exactly four articles with any game content. A year ago, we got that much content in one week.

I will add that I was not a subscriber back then, but since I have started subscribing the material has gotten better. |

Dungeon and Dragon have improved marginally. One good month does not a pattern make, though.
Unfortunately, the other offerings are still kind a meh. The CB is, at best adequate for its task, though it could stand many, many improvements to even reach where it was before it went online.
And don't even get me started on the Monster Slider. Four months later and not a single step closer to being a useful too. Bupkiss.
I like the VT and its what's really keeping me as a subscriber. However, even it seems stuck in a rut. No real improvements in a long time and no sign of ever getting out of beta.

Yeah, I'm not sure what people want for $7 a month either. I mean lets review here. I started playing in like 1975 or so. My Dragon subscription started with #11. The magazine at that time was 36 pages, bi-monthly, and a subscription cost IIRC $36 (in 197x dollars no less, that would be like $150 bucks today). There were no other bennies with that. After a couple years they expanded to I think around 80 pages monthly. Now, 30 years later for effectively 1/20th of that cost I get 2 online magazines (no need to rummage through boxes of slowly deteriorating back issues and if I happen to lapse my sub for a while I get all the 'back issues' when I come back). I also get CB, MB, and VTT on top of that, plus the awesome online Compendium. It is true that the online MB doesn't do a lot, but I also have one that runs on windows that does all that I want. The CB is great, 1000's of times better than any other similar program I've ever used (heck, for AD&D I had to write my own in basic for a C64 and make it print a decent sheet on a daisywheel printer, no small feat). I normally use Maptool, so I haven't paid too much attention to the VTT as it still lacks some features I consider fairly necessary to my needs, but it is quite usable in general and in any case I don't NEED it and didn't subscribe to get it in the first place.
So, is DDI utterly beyond nitpicking? No. There have been months where the mag content wasn't that interesting or was somewhat poor, and there have been other months when it was downright awesome. Are there things that could be added to the online CB? Absolutely! Do I scratch my head about them withdrawing the offline 'old' CB before the new one was really finished? Yeah, but I just kept using the old one for a couple months and the new one works fine now. Honestly, I think people really should consider how darned good they have it with DDI. There's no equivalent support online for any other RPG, not even close. Really, go look. I rarely fork out money for things I don't need, but I am totally happy to pay for this and the price is excellent for what I'm getting.
I don't mean to be be super critical to the OP, but reality is that no product will satisfy everyone. The vendor can only put out as good a product/service as they can afford to do at the price point people are willing to pay. I'm sure WotC would happily hire another 10 guys and throw them on the DDI team, if all the customers are willing to pay 2 or 3 times more for it. My guess is they did their market research and they're selling subscriptions at what they believe to be the optimum between price and quality. I'm sure they're like any organization and don't do a perfect job at all moments, but DDI is virtually 100% reliable, cheap, and the content is professional, useful, and quite varied. I'm sure it doesn't please them to hear people are displeased, but equally I am pretty sure they know they won't please everyone. Writing them and politely explaining what you want is definitely a good thing, keep it up. Just remember the people there are doing a job and you'll be doing a good thing to keep it polite and as positive as you can.

2.) Content has slowed down and taken a turn for the less useful for many players, especially those that do not embrace Essentials. Nobody feels like there is a reliable content release schedule anymore. Would anyone bet their house that the July materials will be released 'on time'?
3.) Gamers are flush with material. A D&D player that plays 4 encounters a week could play 4E for 40 years without repeating classes if he played the PC from level 1 to 30 and then switched to a new class (while playing in a game that moved at the recommended rates from the DMGs). We have far more official 4E material after 3 years than we had 3e or 3.5 material after 8 years.
I left Insider because:
1.) I didn't want to pay WotC while they recreated the wheel by rebuilding the CB and MB. 2.) I didn't need new content from Insider as I have more than enough great stuff already to run great games for decades. 3.) The new stuff I was getting wasn't making much of an improvement in my enjoyment of the game.
None of that seems to have changed. I don't think it will change anytime soon. |

| #15HoundstoothJul 07, 2011 15:45:32 | First off Id like to say It has been feast and famin in DDI recently, Themes are Great! and I love that they are coming out all over the place these days. I love the online builder as I am on a mac and bootcamp and other methods of running windows is a pain, not to mention I don't want to buy windows or steal just to run the character builder, so bravo.
The Bad, well issue 400 was usless to me as I joinged the game in 2008 with 4e so I have no nestalga. I don't want to see old art and here the staff talk about the good ol days. Dungeon is useless. As a DM I do not run pre made adventures and thus the subscription to dungeon is simply a waste for me. The monster builder, is well, its a lie. I want an encounter builder. Let me select the monsters I want, show me the xp buget for my party, and suggest other monsters just like the MM1 did at the end of a monster entry and let me hit print.
But all that is an aside becasue I don't think the issue is content. Thats right, I would be fine with all of that if they just told me Why there is no monster builder, and took the link away until its ready to try out. Just tell when content will be late, its not like they don't know, and Id rather know not to check the site for 3 days, then always be loading the page to find nothing but disapointment.
Communicaiton is what I think the OP really wanted, and I think good communication is what we all need to keep the faith.
That and fix monster tokens the new nametag tokens suck. |

Four articles with player content, maybe. And frankly, last month's player content, between the Multiclass/Hybrid article and the Battle Cleric, was the best I've seen this year.
I don't know how much more I could ask for, for $7/month. I think it's a bargain.

I know how much: Functional offline CB and MB that get timely and regular updates, and 200% increase in crunch in Dragon. That's what we used to get. I make it a principle to not pay for reduced service at the same price. |

| #22MyztekJul 07, 2011 18:33:25 | Just to point it out, we're not in the 70's. The cost structure back then was different, and the target audience was different. Apples and oranges.
What matters now is this: What do I get for my $7 a month? Is it worth $7?
For me, the answer is 'not much' and 'no'.
I am not aware of much new content that isn't just a stand in for something I already have. In other words, it would be stuff I'd generally have to use in place of other stuff I already own. As there is a lot of great stuff out there that I have not yet had a chance to use, I don't need the new stuff. If I do buy it and use it, the 'value' to me is really the difference in pleasure I'd get from the new stuff compared to the stuff I already own - and there have been VERY few things in the past 2 years that are substantially better than options we had in 2008 and early 2009.
This is the first time since the late 70s that I have not been buying new D&D stuff when it is released. I'm not saying I subscribed to Dragon and Dungeon the entire time, but I have been a subscriber and I did buy a heck of a lot of books - and this is the first time I've ever realized that I was being asked to pay far more for things than I was getting in return.
We've bouht an edition's worth of materials in 2.5 years - everything else tey make these days is unnecessary. |
| #23AbdulAlhazredJul 07, 2011 18:55:15 | Yeah, obviously nobody can tell you what you should expect for $7, especially since there is no other product like DDI to compare to. Still, money now and money 30 years ago ain't that different. Back in the early 80's I was making 1/3 the money that I hire new hires for now right out of school and I'm paying rather low rates compared to a lot of places, and that 1/3 was more than any other graduate from my class was making, by a good chunk. Money is DEFINITELY worth a lot less, so really I have to say DDI is cheap. I mean my business could never sell a service for $7 a head and provide a good product, yet they do a pretty reasonable job of it.
Anyway, I agree, there's a metric boatload of content out there for 4e already. I don't NEED a lot more, but I can always use ideas. I can have 100 books full of items and still if some new one hits the need I have today, it is still worth having. In any case, as much as people keep griping about the tools I'd pay the $7 a month for nothing more than CB and Compendium flat out and not bat an eye. Those 2 things alone save me a LOT of prep time. |
| #24hunterian7Jul 07, 2011 22:52:25 | The main gripe I have with my DDI subscription is the Monster Builder. Everything else has been of consistent quality. |
| #25Jev_RoalJul 07, 2011 23:31:45 | What do I get for my $7 a month? Is it worth $7?
A gallon of milk costs 5 to 6 dollars. A subway sandwhich that I spend 15 minutes eating while gaming is 6 dollars. 7 dollars sounds like a bargain. |
| #26AhrimonJul 08, 2011 0:25:03 | We've bouht an edition's worth of materials in 2.5 years - everything else tey make these days is unnecessary.
I think this is a big part of the problem. They pushed too much crunch too fast. And they've realized it. Now they have to dial it back in order to keep 4e going. Otherwise it's 5e several years early, or several years of very little material. So by slowing things down they're extending the life of 4e. It's a good thing in the end in my oppinion.
Plus there's enough crunch to out now where I'll probably never even use 20% of it. I want more fluff. Articles like the Barony of the Emerald Blade are what I want to see. Tell me more about awesome locations to spark my creativity. Throw in a crunchy bit or two to go along with it and I'll be a happy camper.

I don't know where you live but a gallon of milk where I live is 1.89
And lets compare it to other online services, not tangible goods that disappear after you use them. Netflix is $9' hulu is $10. DDI is no where near the value of those 2. The value should be more in line with 4 or 5 a month on a month to month basis. Look, the content in the mags see days is most likely content that was already there from all the cancelled print books.
The value is not there for a lot of people, because it was a better product 1 and 1/2 years ago. I make it a policy to not support something that gives me less, for more money.

We usually don't disagree on our posts Electricbee (and I love youricon to boot ) so i apologize if my delivery was a bit off. The house almost burned down the day I posted this so maybe it was the smoke inhalation talking... That being said, i didn't expect a personalized response from me writing them a letter, just a refund like everyone else. Also, I was talking about all of the NEW PLAYERS I brought in for D&D. All the hours of my free time devoted to game days, encounters, tournaments etc., that are fed up with the implementation so that they no longer come.
It's not that I in my hubris said, because u did this to me so I'm no longer brining in new players, it's that new players after liking one of the games are like, "that was awesome, how can i get more?" i direct them to DDI, then they are pissed that things that were advertised as them getting for the price they didn't get and when they got new content, it ruined some of the old content.
it's not about WotC doing me a favor, it's about me doing them a favor which I don't expect to be rewarded for but when others crap on WotC and get rewarded for it, yeah, it does feal like a slap in the face.

A gallon of milk costs 5 to 6 dollars. A subway sandwhich that I spend 15 minutes eating while gaming is 6 dollars. 7 dollars sounds like a bargain.
I don't know where you live but a gallon of milk where I live is 1.89 And lets compare it to other online services, not tangible goods that disappear after you use them. I make it a policy to support something that gives me less, for more money.
Yep, netflix and hulu are a fairer comparison. Otherwise, it's like comaparing the value of a +5 Holy Avenger to Gloves to a One Use Wetstone
Milk would be considered a consumable by LFR standards, Netflix, Hulu, and DDi, would be considered permanent magical item.

| #34Talaeden_DenthiirJul 08, 2011 11:21:15 | As far as all of theese food analogies go, someone posted one about paying 5-6 $ for a subway sandwich to eat while they played D&D. I couldn't find the post to quote it but this is my take on it.
I'm not disparaging the fact that DDi is a decent price. To use the above posters subway anaolgy it's like this:
For the past two years I'v beeen paying around 5-6 $ for my Black Forest Ham footlong from subway. It's my favorite sandwich with all of the fixins. Succent ham, Real wisconsin cheese, tangy pickles, smooth mayonaise, crunchy veggies, toasted to perfection on a delicious italian roll...
Playing D&d with my friends and brining many new players to encounters, tournaments, gameday, etc as i happily munch away.
Then WotC promises a bag 'o delicious granny smith cookies with my sub at no additional cost citing that the adventure tools is finally rolling out.
Months go by and i salivate eating my sandwich anticipating how cool it's gonna be.
Excuse after excuse as to why no cookies.
But that's ok cuz my sub (sub sandwich = subscription, how apt) still tastes delicious for the amazing price.
Then all of a sudden I'm still being charged 5 - 6 $ but alll I get is a few pickles on a bun with the mayonaise squirted all over my face!
Plus, all my friends and new friends who've joinded D&D are yelling at me because I would brag about this awesome Sub and when they finally bought it all they get is a bun with a few pickles and random shots of Mayonaise squirted all over them!
I'm not posting any of this for the sake of compalining. I'm complaining about how the complainers get rewarded while people who've defended WotC since 2003 not just on these anonymous boards (note that I actually left nmy real name in the email cuz i'm not hiding beyond anoynimity [not suggestion anyone else is]) but in real life at official WotC venues.
I'm typing this because wotC is loosing many new faces do to what they are doing.
I'm typing this because when most people Beta a video game they don't pay for the Beta and if they do pay for the Game in Beta (ala Minecraft for example) it's at 1/2 off and constantly has SUBSTANTIAL updates!
Do you die hard 'slay them on the crusade' because they are not foaming at the mouth supporters not understand that I was pretty much one of you until recently?
Do u understand that I'm not the only one?
Do u understand when people like Dane McArty and I post things like this (read his excellent locked post, "It's simple WotC). That for die-hards like us to do a 180 there must be A VALID REASON?!
Do you not understand that i still said I have faith in WoTC and i want them to do better in my 1st post?
I DON'T want WotC to fail. I have good friends that work for WotC. Peter Lee and Chris Tulach and Chris Sims are some of the best people you could hope to meet and hang out withy in real life let alone be game designers.
i want WotC to succeed! It's just that sometimes everyone, no matter how important they are, needs a wake up call! Wotc this is your wake up call!

| #35MyztekJul 08, 2011 11:31:45 | Money is not universal. Spending $100 in New York City is different than spending $100 in South Piddide Arkansas is different than spending $100 online.
Some people spent less money feeding their family of 4 between 200 and 2010 than I spent on gaming.
What is $7? For you it might be a gallon of milk, a Subway sandwich, or a paperback book. For others, it might be food for 2 days.
In my case, although I live comfortably, $7 is not an amount I'd just toss away. Considering the minimal actual benefit I'd derive from Insider, paying for it would be pretty much a waste. |
| #36frothsofJul 08, 2011 11:46:33 | I've been happy - between the themes, the hybrid rules, and the STR cleric I am happy with the last couple of months content.
also, I didn't think you needed to do anything special to get into the VT beta - I mean shoot I'm in it.
What i meant is that many people who got into the VTT early did so because they were rabid complainers of Wotc not supporters . It's akin to thanking the person who shot you instead of the one who stops you from bleeding to death.

no, you made that up, or rather, someone made it up and you are repeating it. we both know who that someone is. the vast majority of original invites were from the blogging community and game shop owners. this is a nice FABLE to tell yourself though, the moral of course being you dont know what the hell youre talking about |

Class as usual Frothy. I remember a lot of the more vocal critics of the "new" DDi (and several non-DDi subscribers) got early invites to the VTT Beta. Is sure seemed like you, personally, got in after complaining. Dane, too. I don't think it's a fable at all. That said, I didn't have any trouble getting an invite, once I applied. (shrug)... must be a matter of perception. |

Yep, perception is indeed reality. Some people need to display a little more perspective and empathy. |

How one feels about DDI, and whether it is worth it for what they pay is completely, 100% subjective, and I would like everyone to keep that in mind when they are discussing the OP. *To me* it is worth the value, to the OP it is not. I have no more right to tell him that he is wrong than I do to tell someone who likes pie that they are wrong. The OPs feelings on DDI have no impact on the value of DDI to me, nor should they have an impact on the value of DDI to you.
I, for one, appreciate the OP for taking the time to write a well thought out and well-written letter to WotC, as it makes it pretty much a no-brainer to include it in my weekly report to WotC. |

True, and I'm probably one of those people. Sorry, I try.

LOL. I wasn't pointing fingers. Everyone on this planet could stand to practice a little more tolerance.

I'm going to offer a different perspective: Some of us may have felt that such an arrangement was untenable long term. It seems we were right. |

I wasn't implying that was you at all. I'm truely SORRY if it came across that way. And yes, u are right, I heard most of these complaints from the boards and was just taking them at their word that people were being honest about this. i forget their names but i wasn't thinking of you at all. Not only do we agree on many board topics, but i let u quote me as your sig and requested to join ur VTT game. Since I'm not possed by Acererak i wouldn't do that .

Thank You Mudbunny,
but just for clarification's sake, the coast of my sub isn't the problem, it's
For the past two years I'v beeen paying around 5-6 $ for my Black Forest Ham footlong from subway. It's my favorite sandwich with all of the fixins. Succent ham, Real wisconsin cheese, tangy pickles, smooth mayonaise, crunchy veggies, toasted to perfection on a delicious italian roll...

Plus, FYI to everyone, i sent the email out more than once 3-4 months ago, not a few days ago. Part of my dissatisfaction is the fact that their has been no reply to said email. The reason i didn't post about the letter until now is because of my faith in WotC do generally do a good job (remember, I was a vehement supporter until recently since 2003 ;) )
Thank you MudBunny for considering my letter well written and thought out and for incluiding it in your report.

In terms of man-hours/income efficiency, content glut, or both?
