Compendium: Yes CB: No While the Compendium is easily done on iPad or iPhone, Character Builder requires Microsoft Silverlight. I have not yet found a way to get Silverlight on either as of yet.
#3 Mand12 Nov 07, 2011 15:26:03	While there is no current app to run the CB or VT yet, I have had great success using a remote desktop app on my ipad.  My computer can run the CB or VT and I can control it remotely using the ipad.  Result:  CB and VT on the ipad, but requires an active computer to connect to. The particular app that I use does have the ability to do remote desktop via an internet connection, as well.  I haven't had a need to do that since my group meets at my home, and my local wireless network is more than enough.  But the capability is there.

#5 Mand12 Nov 07, 2011 20:21:46	Honestly, remote desktop is pretty damn close.  Keep your computer at home and connected to the internet, and you've got pretty much full control via the ipad.  Of course, it requires having another computer, but I have a desktop for gaming purposes so it's not an investment for me.  I have the desktop and the ipad and that meets all of my needs. I really only think that a laptop is worth it for people who are making it their only computer.
#6 macleanbrad Nov 07, 2011 20:37:35	Splashtop - for access to the home PC it runs it perfectly and resizes to fit screen correctly, works amazing, anything my PC can do my IPad can. i4e - I still use this for character sheets though, it's got an upload website for dnd4e files and I prefer it to regular sheets or the regulr character builder viewer Compendium App - for access to the Compendium; works well and is better for a touch screen then the regular website. I also download relevant PDFs and images/maps, I use native apps to view and 4 finger swipe between the programs. I've been strongly considering building a personal use class book, race book, feat book and item book to have easy use at the table.

How is the reaction time?  Just depends, on my local wifi the lag from the online character builder is longer then the lag of the mirroring to the IPad, which is to say it's a a quarter of a second to the CBs 2 or 3 seconds. So enough to know it's there but not long enough to be a pain. At my store it's a second or 2 at most but he's got a good connection. 4 hours away at my in-laws it feels the same as my store. I think I'm lucky though and have had rock solid wifi connections over 3g I think it would choke badly.

#10 Mand12 Nov 08, 2011 12:08:03	Not through that specific mechanism, but there are numerous apps that will take an exported .dnd4e file and read it into a sheet.  i4e, iplay4e, there are probably dozens at this point.

I think IPlay4e needs a connection, i4e uses a secondary website to upload your dnd4e file and then you import it from the program. The problem with i4e is that you really need to check it against the Character Builder because it can make mistake. It always sets my Paladins AC like he's not holding a shield. I use i4e and really like it.
#13 szthesquid Nov 08, 2011 12:48:47	It'll be a bit of a wait, but Windows 8 tablets will be running the Metro interface on top of classic Windows, meaning that in addition to all those apps you can also install standard programs and use desktop web interfaces.
