Download Problems with July Issues (Dragon & Dungeon)

Nov 09, 2008 13:39:05 Hello all, I just subscribed to the insider yesterday, and one of my first order's of business was to download the Dragon and Dungeon issues I have missed. I was able to download them all fine with the exception of the JULY issues of BOTH publications (Dragon #365 and Dungeon #156), is there a known problem with this month or some reason someone can give me that is not allowing the download to succeed?

All of the others downloaded quickly and with no problems, when I try to download these, it at first looks like it is going to take, but then after a few minutes I get an error message that reads "A file I/O error has occurred" (same error on both of those issues)

Can anyone provide me with an alternative link, or direct link or some other way to obtain these full issues at this time?

On a side note, I know a lot of people have some negative things to say about the whole online deal, but I thought the price was fair and if this is something that is going to do what is being planned, it could be a valuable resource for playing D&D, I have some friends from my old gaming group, who all live in a different state now, and once the whole thing is up and running we'll be planning an online D&D game together! How cool is that!

Nov 09, 2008 14:39:45 Well I just downloaded Dragon 365, so the server side isn't completely broken. I'm not completely sure why you are having these problems, but I have a feeling that whatever the problem is, it is related to the fact that the July issues are something like twice the size of all the other issues because they tried a different way to compile the issues that month.

Anyways, I'm afraid there is nothing I can do to help you other then tell you that it is possible to download them, so you should try every so often until it works.

Nov 09, 2008 14:57:04 Ok, thanks, I will try again later and see if I have any luck, I download large files all the time for work, so I don't think there is a problem with the size, perhaps it has something to do with Acrobat, since when I click on the link it loads the in acrobat (from there I save them), maybe I need to figure out how to download them direction and bypass Acrobat?

Thanks for letting me know they worked ok for you though.

Nov 09, 2008 16:44:22 I don't think it is opening in Acrobat that is the problem, but here is a work around from another thread for a seperate problem that might be worth a try.

My browser is Internet Explorer 6 and my Adobe Reader is 6. Just for clarity, what's yours? It can make a difference.

Here's the work-around I've been using (maybe it will help, who knows ):

Right click on "See it now" link. Then, click on "Save Target As", until an option to save the file with an "html" extension presents itself. Close the box. Now, right click on "See it now" link (yes, again), then right click on "Save Target As" (again); there will now be an option to save the file with a "text" extension. Save the file. Once saved, it opens as a PDF (if not, see below). The idea is to save with a "text" file extension, not "html" (it doesn't work).

If for some reason it doesn't open as a PDF (just as often, it opens in WordPad, translated as gibberish), then open Acrobat Reader. Click on the "Open" folder icon. Make sure "all files" (not just "Adobe PDF files") can be viewed. Then, double click on the saved file (it has a WordPad icon), opening it from within the Reader, then save as a proper PDF file. Lastly, erase the now worthless text file.

Just to clarify: WotC is aware of problems with downloads, even going so far as to admit that the problem is on their end, not ours. See the Digital Insider news items.

Once again, the problem this was in response to was different(the person's download was gibberish), but there is a chance that the source of the problem is the same and that the same work around could fix it.

Ok, I wanted to post an update in the hope that if someone else has my problem with the July issues, they'll find this thread and solve it.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, and was using Adobe Acrobat 8.1x (don't recall the specific version of 8), in any case, I uninstalled Acrobat 8 and downloaded the new version 9 and tried it again, it worked fine that way.

So apparently the combination of Vista and Acrobat 8 was not allowing a download of those larger two issues from July.
