Downloadable character builder demo question.

Dec 29, 2010 8:39:39 Sorry if this has been posted before but I wasn't able to find any results.

I have had the downloaded demo version of character builder for awhile now and only recently signed up for D&D paid subscription. Have tried to update the builder and wanting to unlock it so it goes further than level 3, but the updater seems to fill up and just stall endlessly. Are updates for this program no longer supported? Is there any way I can unlock it "as-is" and make characters higher than level 3? (yes I know I would be missing out on new content and powers/feats)

Any positive imput would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Dec 29, 2010 9:20:30 The downloadable builder is no longer supported. If the update server is still online, you might be able to get the October update, but you won't be able to get any further than that. The CB was moved to an online-only model recently, and the unfortunate news is that it's bug-riddled and poorly designed.

If you see an available update when you open the builder, you should be able to get the latest update - but the October release was/is notoriously difficult to install - the only reliable solution seems to be to leave the CB connected for as long as it takes to finish the update, which has been anything up to three days for some people.

Sorry the news isn't better.

Dec 29, 2010 9:24:53 Thanks for the information and tips. I will try to keep it connected long as I can here, currently the update screen displays patch notes for December 2010 Update... books HotFK and DM kit along with a few online magazines.

Dec 29, 2010 9:48:29 That's the update for the Compendium, not the builder. The downloadable CB inherits a single set of Patch notes, it doesn't/didn't have its own.

Dec 31, 2010 21:49:35 Actually when you do run the old character builder it does say that the last update was in Dec. I think it just links to the same update info that is for the OCB

Jan 03, 2011 12:49:50 I let the downloader run over the entire weekend and beyond, it never did finish or update.
The screen simply mentioned something about servers being down for "maintence".

I wish I had downloaded the stand alone program as an entire product rather than just the demo, very disappointing to be stuck like this, but at least I can make/print out a little and in the format I like much Much better than both those available on the online builder.

Would most definately sign on for repeating payments if the stand alone CB were brought back...

Sadly I have the same issue and have had no success getting the builder to update.

It used to work perfectly on my netbook. The first install and update was flawless as of 4 months ago. But I had to reinstall after my hard drive failed and I lost everything. Ever since the new builder has been launched I have been unable to update the offline builder. I can't help but think there is something wrong with their server or it is deliberately down. It used to work just fine.
