Yes, when they are ready for download there will be information about how to download them. Make sure your computer meets the requirements for the visualizer and game table listed on the current DDI pages.

It'd be really nice if there was actually some info about downloading on the webpages themselves. Even if it just said "Download Coming Soon!"

I am at the point where I just hope they are ready before 5th edition releases.

Are you going to be able to use the character generator offline? I loved the E-Tools and the ability to install it on your computer and make your character up and then pull it up during gaming night and do a print preview to see your character sheet and use it while you play. The place I play does not have internet access, so this new character generator would have to be offline use as well as online use. Does anybody know if it can be used offline?

When you are offline, there will be limited functionalites. For example, you can't level up a character offline, but you can print a character sheet from a character file created with the Character Builder application.
When you are online, and a D&DI subscriber, you will get the full benefit of the application (leveling up your character, as well as printing your character's detailed power cards).

*Blink* So you can only get DM awarded ex. pts. when you are online and if on a guest pass have to spend time leveling up as part of your online experience?
In some ways it makes sense that DM needs to verify leveling up. This just sounds awkward to me if DM assigns ex. pts. end of game play and then has to deal with each player leveling up in next game session before play can even start. Also this is not Table Top where a DM can deal with players on an individual contact base between game sessions.
I know the passes might be for 24 hours so my concern clearly would not effect many. I also know that some people play over 24 hours straight and losing online gaming to level up would likely be another factor on marketing side of this matter.

Why advertise the ability to create your character and visualize them online if the actual tools aren't ready when the new version is released? This pisses me off... bad planning on Wizard's part, but like that is any surprise.

Becoming too much like WoW/Blizzard.

I think WotC_DM is meaning to imply that while offline you are (essentially) limited to viewing your characters and their character sheets (read only copies).

When you're online (and with an active subscription or 24-hour pass) you can then "level up" and otherwise make changes to your character.

That's how I read it anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if the *downloads* are free.

But to get any use out of the tools one would likely need to be logged in and have an active subscription/pass/trial.

yeh, i have been flicking through the dnd insider looking for a way to dowlaod, it is frustrating and nothing tells you its not ready. It does say that it is coming out the same time as the players handbook, yesterday. obviously its not working and you cant download and no info to say when it will be ready. so will be ready by the time the 5th edition is out. useless........

I just spent quite awhile trying to figure out where to download the new tools. I thought "surely if they have released the books the downloads must be on here somewhere?"

Ok, so it seems that the tools will be 98% useless offline. That is stupid. I want it to be able to take the program offline, edit my character, make changes to it as the gaming session takes place. The characters I make for offline use will probably never be used online. I don't care to constantly print out my character every time I make a small change. If I wanted to do that, I'd just use a blank character sheet and a pencil and do it the old fashioned way.

Some of the tools like encounter building and map making might be usable offline, I certainly hope so.
I do see some logic behind not leveling up online because Game Table can be customized for House rules (or at least so has been planned). If the DM rules Fireball is not a spell that can be used, the download character also needs to have downloaded Rules, including House rules when leveling up to be sure a non permitted ability, spell, weapon, feat, etc. is not selected during the level up process.

I am not happy to hear this aspect however can see at least one reason leveling up should be done online. There very well can be many others.
