| #1mudbunnyFeb 12, 2009 23:14:42 | Dragon 372 - Secrets of the City Entombed by Matt Sernett Necromancy -- the magic of death and the undead -- is feared and viewed with horror by most. But some who practice this blackest of arts know that power of any sort, when wielded by a just and wise hand, can be bent to serve any master for good or evil. In "Secrets of the City Entombed," explore lost Rahesh, the city destroyed by fire and ash where the study of necromancy once achieved immense power. * See it now! (560 kb PDF) Evil and necromancy seem to go hand in skeletal hand. The parasitic presence of a vampire, the cold intellect of a lich, the unstoppable rage of the death knight -- these products of necromancy rightfully earn the magic its reputation for malevolence. Yet an axe can be used to cut wood or to hew men. Surely necromancy can be put to good purpose. This is the dream of those who seek necromantic knowledge in taboo Rahesh, the City Entombed, and these Scholars of Sin will share their secrets with those who dare to learn them. This article supports Open Grave: Secrets of the Undead. The book provides a feast of great ideas and game material for Dungeon Masters, and players will find its magic items and rituals useful. The powers presented in this article offer players more ways to add an air of necromancy to their characters, and the setting for the discovery of those powers gives DMs a great place to reveal material from Open Grave. In addition, this article features material for classes from Player's Handbook 2, out in March, 2009. Discuss this article here. |
| #2beej_silverFeb 12, 2009 23:42:52 | Two words: Animate. Dead. That wizard 9th level power alone makes me happy. :D EDIT: Holy. Sealing Death's Door (Cleric utility 22) feels too strong. I'm not sure, as I've never played in epic myself, but a zone where none of you or your allies can fall unconscious or die? What...the... |
| #3jimthegrayFeb 13, 2009 0:11:09 | Two words: Animate. Dead. That wizard 9th level power alone makes me happy. :D To be fair at epic levels is when dying becomes more an inconvenance then a huge issue :P |
| #4mattbertFeb 13, 2009 0:22:34 |
"In 1999, while working for Men’s Health Magazine, he nar- rowly avoided being a wardrobe tracker in the male fashion industry."
How awful! :OMG! That Sealing Death's Door only lasts until the Cleric's next turn, at which point if they are below 0hp they fall unconcious. So it's just a delay the inevitable tactic. I don't think that's overpowered at 22nd level, but I too haven't played epic. |
| #5cid309Feb 13, 2009 0:33:36 | It has sustain minor, so that's not really an issue, unless the Cleric is somehow disabled. In my opinion, except for the Shaman utility that grants an extra surge to the entire party , Sealing Death's Door, and the Cleric summon, most of the powers are underpowered, especially the warlock and bard ones. Mostly cool flavor, but I wouldn't pick them unless they were upgrated. |
| #6jimthegrayFeb 13, 2009 0:52:41 | It has sustain minor, so that's not really an issue, unless the Cleric is somehow disabled. animate dead has uses .. I am really curious what tome of binding class feature is going to give wizards |
| #7Lord_VentnorFeb 13, 2009 1:20:39 | I'm curious as to why they based an Infernal Pact power off of Charisma... But I'm happy with the Swordmage powers. They look awesome!!! |
| #8Lone_Wolf_02Feb 13, 2009 1:55:24 | Well, after a lousy night at work, I must say this is certainly a pleasant surprise. Here I was expecting, at most, an article with a bunch of fluff and perhaps a few monster stats, and instead I get a veritable cornucopia of necromancy-themed spells, prayers, and evocations. And a few of them are even summons, giving people more time to test drive that particular mechanic before Arcane Power shows up in April. Also, was very surprised and pleased to see some powers from the Avenger, Bard, and Shaman in the mix. Makes me look forward to the PHB2 even more than I already was. |
| #9BantamFeb 13, 2009 1:57:58 | This article is so freakin awesome! Gems like these makes me so happy and confident of 4e ![]() |
| #10LordDreadmanFeb 13, 2009 2:14:59 | Thank goodness for those Wizard Spells! These "Targets Enemies in Burst" effects are exactly what the Wizard needs! I really hope that R&D goes back and "updates" the Wizard Spells in the PHB in a similar way. The Wizard really needs to stop being a hazard to his or her own team. In this way, fun at the table can increase. I'm so happy that there are signs of WotC preparing to fix the Wizard. That would be an extremely responsible thing to do ... maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up. No, I will anyway. Yours, Lord Dreadman |
| #11CailteFeb 13, 2009 4:39:48 | I liked the Article, and I'm pleased to see an alternative to Stinking Cloud emerge for the Wizard at level 5 before Arcane Power arrives. (Even more pleased that the compiled issue will arrive in time for my LFR Wizard to choose it for a test drive.) I'm also curious about the "Each month, the Scholars of Sin delve deeper into.." Looks like a column in the making.... |
| #12rhianni32Feb 13, 2009 7:31:09 | nvm |
| #13AlasFeb 13, 2009 7:33:44 | Woohoo! The article gives a shout out to Cappadocia! I used to live in Turkey, and visited the underground "cities" twice. I'll tell you this-- if that were the model for D&D dungeons, squeezing would be the default movement type, not walking. PS: Wizard spells! ![]() |
| #14chimeratechnologyFeb 13, 2009 7:47:22 | FINALLY! Necromancy is back on track! |
| #15johnthedm7000Feb 13, 2009 12:09:05 | So, how long does animate dead last, and how many zombies/skeletons can it make? Could you perhaps give us non-subscribers a few minor details about the necromantic goodness? |
| #16malisteenFeb 13, 2009 12:25:44 | Animate dead is a 9th level daily wizard power with the summoning keyword. The creature's size is equal to the targeted dead enemy. It's other characteristics are set by the summoning keyword and the power description (ie, it does not use the stats or attacks of the creature itself). It does not have its own actions - the wizard must expend actions to make it more or attack as normal for the summoning keyword. As a daily spell it can only be cast once per day under normal circumstances, and as a power with the summoning keyword the creature lasts until the end of the encounter, so you won't be building up any undead armies with this version of Animate dead, nor will you be able to shop the monster manual for new toys. Of course, I wouldn't expect either of those aspects of older edition necromancers to appear in 4e, even for a dedicated 'necromancer' class. If you want to lead an undead army, that's more likely to see print in some sort of 'mass battles' expansion a la 3.5's Heroes of Battle. Overall, 'Animate Dead' is pretty cool, but not really as strong as other wizard dailies of that level. However, Arcane power will be out in a few months, and will introduce the summoning keyword in print form along with a new wizard class feature variant (either a new implement focus, or something to take instead of implement focus, I'm not entirely clear on it) for summoning focused wizards that might make the animate dead power a bit more attractive. |
| #17incenjucarFeb 13, 2009 13:15:22 | The trick with Animate Dead is to gather up the bones of creatures of different sizes that have extra reach rather than relying on whatever you find in the battlefield. Just toss the bones into your Bag of Holding and dump out what you need when you need it. The flavor of bone-collecting is, of course, a good enough reason in itself. |
| #18AlasFeb 13, 2009 13:30:18 | If you want to lead an undead army... Hmm... Higher level summoning spell, Large or Huge "creature" with swarm resistances and aura X to represent its horde-ishness... /brainstorm |
| #19vebrandssonFeb 13, 2009 13:50:14 | Hmm so we see necromancy powers for existing classes. What, I wonder, does this mean for the possibility of an actual necromancer class? I honestly care nothing of what source they'd give such a class, but I do want to see a necromancer. |
| #20vebrandssonFeb 13, 2009 13:51:05 | Hmm... I've been suggesting this for a while. It seems the easiest way to do an "undead army" |
| #21jwtFeb 13, 2009 14:11:17 | Beyond the coolness of this article itself I noticed something else. They used links! Links, in a on-line article. I loved it. I really think they are starting to get this on-line publishing thing. Now I just need some Hi-res large sized player safe maps with my Dungeon articles, and I will be happy. |
| #22malisteenFeb 13, 2009 15:37:15 | Hmm so we see necromancy powers for existing classes. What, I wonder, does this mean for the possibility of an actual necromancer class? I honestly care nothing of what source they'd give such a class, but I do want to see a necromancer. It leaves a necromancer class in the same 'unconfirmed speculation' bin that it already was in. While a necromancer class is highly likely, given the popularity of the concept both among players and designers, it's likely so far out as to not even be on the radar yet. What is guessed is that it will be part of the Shadow power source (as undead and necrotic damage are strongly associated with such in the fluff). Power source is a matter of wild speculation, as a necromancer class could very easily be designed to fit any of them, and even if the designers had begun contemplating the matter, they still have more then enough time to change their minds. As for when it would be out - well, that would be either PHBIII or PHBIV, along with the Shadow power source, or in a campaign player's guide released after the Shadow power source was introduced. We know it's not in the PHBII. It's chances of being in the PHBIII are slightly reduced by the confirmation of the monk, and thus the Ki power source, in that book, leaving one less potential power source slot that Necromancy might occupy in that book. My personal suspicion is that we won't see the Shadow Powersource or a necromancer class until PHBIV. While I have reasons to believe that, however, it is still only speculation. |
| #23vebrandssonFeb 13, 2009 16:07:11 | My personal suspicion is that we won't see the Shadow Powersource or a necromancer class until PHBIV. While I have reasons to believe that, however, it is still only speculation. I'm not sure, looking at the PH1 and PH2 by themselves you have 4 power sources (divine, arcane, martial, and primal) each with four classes. Admittedly Arcane has 5 if you include the FRPG but for the sake of argument we'll ignore it. If they follow the same 4/2/2 pattern with classes per source we will see all the base PH classes (for the first 8 sources) in the next 2 PH suppliments. I am going to assume useing the 4/2/2 pattern the PH3 and 4 respectively will be Ki/Shadow/Psionic and Elemental/Shadow/Psionic. As the Necromancer is a staple of fantasy I'm hoping it makes it into 3 personally, but the fact that they bumpped my favorite class the bard from the PH1 to the PH2 in favor of the warlock, who knows. Still I wonder if we will see other articles like this with more necromantic powers, or a variation with enchanter powers or conjurer powers, or even illusionist powers. They would be interesting to see I think. |
| #24oneirosFeb 13, 2009 17:54:28 | The trick with Animate Dead is to gather up the bones of creatures of different sizes that have extra reach rather than relying on whatever you find in the battlefield. Just toss the bones into your Bag of Holding and dump out what you need when you need it. The power refers to a fallen enemy's corpse. A skeleton might not be considered a corpse. A bag of holding only holds up to 200 lbs., so one won't be lugging around a large size dead body in it either. Also, even if a skeleton counts as a corpse, I'd say that each use of a power "uses up" the body it's cast on once the summoned creature is slain or the power expires. In the Guild Wars MMORPG, necromancers "exploit" corpses, leaving a blackened husk which cannot be targeted by other powers. I'm thinking of running 4E necromantic powers that use corpses the same way (and possibly adding a few more powers based on Guild Wars necromancers ) |
| #25DragolothFeb 13, 2009 21:54:38 | I'd love to see a GW style curse necromancer in 4th ed. |
| #26marius4Feb 14, 2009 2:22:39 | I was quite shocked to see the hyperlinks in the article as well. It felt very...online! ![]() In regards to the necromancy powers and a possible future necromancer class, I noticed that none of the powers were tied to the Shadow power source at all. Granted, that power source isn't out yet but most speculation has presumed a future necromancer would be tied to Shadow. Perhaps "Necromancer" will end up a PP requiring necrotic powers or something? Cool article. It's neat that they gave the powers a setting context via Rahesh. I remember one of their artwork goals for 4e was to provide actual scenery and background. This idea seems to be echoed by the written content of the article. |
| #27serphetFeb 14, 2009 9:16:09 | I really think necromancer should just be a Paragon Path. |
| #28Aaron_HighcolorFeb 14, 2009 9:33:38 | I really think necromancer should just be a Paragon Path. I agree. The power smattering is a nice start, but it should be a Paragon Path, not a base class. Something any arcane/divine class should be able to move into and work towards. |
| #29Xaielao2Feb 14, 2009 15:14:15 | OMG I want Accursed Souls. Not sure what Utility I'll switch out for it next lvl but I'm absolutely going to pick it up. I can see now.. attacked by a horde of Minions, find the one in the middle, Curse it, use this, then blast it. It blows up and so does every one around it buahaha! As to the Infernal attack using charisma, that is odd. Though perhaps the fact that its a Domination power in certain circumstances is why. |
| #30shaych0488Feb 17, 2009 18:36:14 | Animate Dead makes me squee...it also makes me carry around corpses. I'm not morbid at all |
| #31beej_silverFeb 26, 2009 23:28:29 | Animate Dead targets Reflex as of the compiled version. :D And the summoned creature has the undead keyword to boot. Now it's even better. XD |
| #32dcfMar 06, 2009 11:37:30 | Thank goodness for those Wizard Spells! It's too bad this didn't make it into the recent character builder update, or I would have already picked up the level 5 one. If this keeps up (and it should) I think I'm not going to have any PHB powers left on my wizard. Goodbye web and hello grasp of the grave ![]() |
| #33chanter_houndNov 06, 2009 9:53:54 | Well at least someone mentioned grasp of the grave. I know i'm necromancing this older thread, but we got a wizard who swears by GotG. And i can easily see why. |
