I wonder why there are so many broken brokedeadeddead links each week? As Julius Sumner-Miller would have said, "Why is this so?"

No one in Washington is at work, so this likely won't be fixed for another couple hours.  Still, I've got it on my list of items to have corrected as soon as someone walks in the door, and I can ambush them.

I wonder how much the authors of your CMS would charge to add some sort of "publish the PDF and the article at the same time" functionality... that way the system could prevent the article from going live if the PDF wasn't in place.

Any news on the wandering Tiefling article while we're at it?

I think it's sloppy to provide a title page and link for something that obviously isn't gonna be posted for hours yet.  I say obviously because this isn't the only time this sorta thing has happened.  I'm disappointed; this is confusing and sloppy.

I concur. Please put some more effort into DDI. We are paying customers, after all.

Yeah, apparently "soon" = more than an hour from now.  I guess a few more hours doesn't matter since it is already three days later than the article was orignally supposed to be published.

Was really looking forward to this one also.  Seriously I've done web design it's not this hard to fix a link.  I'm starting to think it's the table top gods conspiring against the computer age.

I was able to dl  the article a few seconds ago.

Edit:  Misprint in the very first sentence.  Check this out:

The invoker stands along among the divine champions described in the Player’s Handbook® sourcebooks. Where clerics, avengers, and paladins embrace the gods through holy rites, indoctrination, and investiture, the invoker transcends mortal limitations and
forges a compact with the god directly.

The word is apparently s'posed to be 'alone'.  Grreat work (yes, I intentionally spelled great that way ;)).

I noticed that too... I don't understand how they can pay artists and writers but can't afford an editor.

Um, perhaps because they can't afford an editor?  Also in this case, there's some yelling about the article being late.  So they may have ripped it out of the editors hands and published it.  I hope they'll fix the editing issues in the compiled version, once they have a chance to.

Well, I guess what I mean is that I would have emailed them those corrections I just posted for $10, since it took me all of 10 minutes to read through it.  They probably paid way more for that illustration of the invoker.  Maybe proofreaders get paid much more than I think they do... I might be in the wrong business. ;)

Angelic Harrier - "A fiery angel swoops catches your enemy"
Heaven's Bountiful Reward - Missing period at the end of fluff.
Radiant Cordon - Says "Frequency" instead of "Encounter" for type.
Summon Celestial Lion - No attack roll under "Opportunity Attack", has "Thunder" as a keyword but doesn't deal any thunder damage.
Altar of Defense - Says "Frequency" instead of "Daily"
Omen of Damnation - Capitalize "One Enemy", has the "Fire" keyword but only deals radiant damage.
Cast the First Stone - Grammar sort of wrong in the fluff.  ("One stone.... as they" should be "as its" or change the structure of the sentence)
Angelic Messenger - "You conjure" should be "You summon" (or Summoning should be Conjuration)

You are going to submit these to the Errata thread, right?

Some comments:

* Hand of Fate.  They mention that you can't use it until 4th level (I'm nto sure that this has ever been confirmed elsewhere... last I heard, there was conflicting language and arguments on both sides of the discussion of whether the Invoker could use it at levels 1 through 3).  However, they don't provide good examples of how it could be used in interesting ways.  This is an ability of the invoker that can break a game if a DM doesn't understand it, or can be ignored by PCs who don't get it.  I consider it a pretty important part of the invoker class and was disappointed to see it handled with such a light hand.

* Silent maledicition is the only power in the game (last I checked) that stuns (save ends) at 1st level.  That is a huge factor to consider when selecting powers.

* I'd have spent a little more time discussing options for using powers that daze the invoker.  Perhaps some reminders of what the penalties for being dazed include?  Perhaps some discussion of what other powers you might not want to take if you have multiple poweers that daze you (such as immediate powers).

* I would have added a bit more on the domains.  There are a few interesting things that a player can do with some of these domains.  Certain domain powers fit really well with the invoker concept.  My dwarven invoker of Kord really enjoys his access to Power of Storm (combined with Echoes of Thunder and Resounding Thunder).

* I like the new summons, but I would have likes to have seen the level 1 and level 5 summons attack as a minor action for less damage.  I really wish there were a few wummon choices available at all levels where you get daily powers.

* The article has new powers at first level.  Why didn't the article include these in its discussion of first level powers?

* Why does Summon Celestial Lion have the Thunder keyword?

* Angelic Messenger is interesting as a Utility.  It can restore an average of 175 hps without using any surges if used between combats (powers last for 5 minutes outside of combats - that gives it 50 rounds to heal PCs).  That is an insane amount of non-surge healing at 10th level, and a pretty decent amount of healing at 30th level.  It can also allow the PCs to fly past obstacles.  It also gives the PCs that 'mine detector' summoned creature.  Of all the new powers, this is the one that I think my invoker will be retooling to use immediately just because I like the summoning aspect of invokers (I really wish they did an entire article just on Invoker summoning - perhaps Summoner Invokers will be a build in Divine Power II).

* Altar of Confinement may also be worthwhile due to unlimited range and dealing damage multiple times with only 1 minor action.  It seems like a great way to eliminate skirmisher or artillery minions.  At second level it is only good for 3 or 6 damage (roughly).  At 20th level you might be dealing a lot more damage with it.  As such, I think this is a power you might retrain into once you hit early to middle paragon levels.  It will be interesting if we ever get an invoker power that can be used multiple times.  It seems to work with utility powers (daily and encounter ones, at least).  This is also a candidate for other classes to take with multiclassing.  An Avenger would get to deal this damage every time it used Oath of Enmity... A cleric could use it every time it used Holy Word.  Autodamage against enemy controllers, skirmishers, artillery, etc... with unlimited range is pretty cool.

* Angelic Harrier - A second role just to knock an enemy prone is a bit of a waste of time.  This power wouldn't have been too strong if it damaged, pushed and knocked prone all on one roll.

I have learned three things from this thread:

  1. Wizards still hasn't worked out how to get the article links right despite the issue of broken links being around since DDi started. It's a fairly basic issue and one that Wizards should put some effort into getting right.

  2. The editors are still off their game. There is no excuse for the number of minor errors in such short documents. If Wizards cannot afford to pay for more staff then create a pool of fans under NDAs to proof-read the articles before they're published.

  3. Rules should be playtested. If they can't be playtested "in house" (actually, they shouldn't be because of the risk of "groupthink"), contract it out to the main posters on the CharOp boards. Many of them have a far better grasp of the mechanics than the professionals so get them involved. They're a resource!

Actually, I knew these three things before. Honestly, if I was running the Wizards business I would fix these things post-haste. It's all about quality. So, Bill, rather than Ampersand articles telling us about cool new stuff (and, thank God, they're no longer about telling us how important you are) why not tell us how, as the Director of RPGs, you have gone and fixed the basics.

Wow, that made me chuckle. Then cry a little bit.

I guess Wizards doesn't have to pay editors because us subscribers will do the work and then they can make the corrections before the final compiled versions of the articles come out.

Makes me a little reluctant to buy books though. If I send them my Player's Handbook II with red circles and margin notes, will they send me a new corrected one?

cheers,
Meshon
