| #1IxidorRSOct 13, 2011 15:23:20 | wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/dra/2... Both themes presented, Hordelands Nomad (re: Mongul) and Sohei (Samarui) are quite interesting and flavorful. I see myself using that Hordelands Nomad theme on a close range archer. I think it could be quite fun. |

I've been wanting to build one for some time. I think I'm going Archer Ranger, this theme, and when I can afford it I'll mount a Direwolf, but in the meantime a horse will do adequately. |
| #4Mand12Oct 13, 2011 15:33:44 | Have you guys seen the Pixie Ranger|Sorcerer riding its raptor beast companion over in CharOp? It's brilliant, and the theme is perfect for it. Edit: Oh...oh my. Sohei on a melee ranger. Well, push up the encounter and daily nova records! |

You just made me barf on my keyboard. But yeah, that's going to be SICK! Now I have two more characters on my working block. |
| #6Mad_JackOct 13, 2011 15:42:32 | Yeah... Both of these themes are pretty spiffy - I finished reading the Nomad and said to myself, "Well, damn..." So far, some of the themes have been underwhelming, some have been merely flavorful while not being impressive and some were nice, but lately they've been getting really sweet. |
| #7Mand12Oct 13, 2011 16:30:40 | I wouldn't say least, but yeah now that I think about it they do have a fair selection of minor action attacks. |
| #8Mand12Oct 13, 2011 16:52:59 | Well, I meant classes with weapon attacks. A lot of them don't have the sort of multiattack damage stacking available to the Ranger, especially on an attack that lacks a power source keyword. Hexblade as an example gets pretty boned, especially if you just took your implement's expertise and didn't get the weapon's expertise as well. |
| #9DavidArgallOct 14, 2011 16:28:29 | Ditto here. Although in my entire 4e gaming life, I have never seen anyone build a rider. My experience is obviously limited to me. I ran into 2 during 3.5 days. They were quite powerful when they could be used. The problem was that they so often could not be used. The first one I DMed was determined to be used and squeezed his mount thru narrow passages. Had there been the wrong type of encounter waiting in the next room... And then we hit an even narrower passage where he just had to give up. The other was lucky enough to get open countryside and seriously hurt monsters with ease. I recall the comments of others that more or less confirm this experience. The rider was quite powerful when he got favorable terrain, but more often he didn't and was thus an inferior choice. 4e rules may seriously changed that, but I have not seen any 4e riders and so I would assume any change has been to make riders worse. |
| #10mcmillanOct 14, 2011 18:30:36 | I played a character for a little while that was built around being a mounted archer in a heavy house ruled 3.5 game, and fit pretty much what DavidArgall said. We started out in wide open terrain where I was effective. After a few adventures we went looking for a Macguffin where my horse had difficulty following, and I was pretty much useless. If I hadn't moved away around that time I'd probably had looked for ways to rebuild to be more flexible. I like the theme for if you want to build a rider, though it definitely seems like rider character require being in a campaign where they work |
| #11EnglishLanguageOct 14, 2011 20:11:12 | Yeah, problem with mounted combat is only one class really gets decent scaleing mounts, and the class itself kinda sucks. |
