Dragon 409
Talking the Talk
by Alana Joli Abbott

Thieves’ cant has long been a staple of the game table and of fantasy literature, but bringing it into a campaign can be a challenge. Few people have the patience or the inclination to learn the full language, a mishmash of slang and grammar based on old Romany. But knowing a few phrases of the secret tongue could turn the heads of your fellow players—and make clear just how different thieves’ cant is from Common or other languages.

Talk about this article here.

This is a great article because it adds a cool element to the game world. Not only does it bring flavor to the game table it contributes to the world building process. I haven't thought about Thieves' Cant in a long time but I can't resist reintroducing it to my game now. I think my players are going to love it too.

Yeah flavorful and helpful. Ever since i saw Thieve's Cant in the AD&D 2nd edition Complete Thief's Handbook i always liked the idea of having a solid reference work on argot.  We worked something out on argot in the 90's. This article expanded on this just fine !

Love the artwork too. A greasy sly rogue.....

This was a great one, and I think that an excellent companion would be an article on another classic form of cant -- rhyming slang. Why rhyming slang? Because it's a part of the inspiration for Planescape's Cant, if I recognized the terms correctly way back when.

Fantastic article - reminds of the kind of thing that regularly appeared in the Dragon during the AD&D era. This kind of article find it's way into my 'keeper' file while yet another article full of feats or prestige classes will not.

I'm having the opposite reaction.  I'm not about to memorize this list so I know what my player is saying, and I don't want to waste the time asking him to repeat what he said in plain English.

Alana Joli Abbott is awesome.

Call me old fashioned, but I normally don't game with a laptop in front of me. However, after reading this article, I'm awfully tempted to have it upon the laptop and off to the side so I can sprinkle in little phrases here and there while the players deal with NPC merchants and the like, just to see if they catch anything.

Great article. I like how Abbott covered all the gaming bases in the article, but really appreciated the sidebar on the history of Thieves' cant in the D&D game. The list of words and phrases at the end of the article is impressive and imminently useful.

Although the article mentions hand signals on page 3, if there had been more room in the aritcle I'd have liked to see talk about drow sign language.

Great job and please use Alana again.

Nice job on this article. Well researched and easy to drop into a game. I like it.
