Apr 28, 2011 18:55:40 So, a friend found a ritual in a dragon magazine called Comrade's Succor which lets you rearrange healing surges amongst your party. However, our DM says that since the article is about Vistani Caravans, that this ritual is unavailable to the party. Is this accurate? Or are items, spells, rituals, etc from Dragon Magazines things that are available to all. It IS available on the character generator.

It's available to all. Dragon content is player content. No reason to think otherwise. Just because the Vistani use something, doesn't mean noone else can.

It's available to all. Dragon content is player content. No reason to think otherwise. Just because the Vistani use something, doesn't mean noone else can.

On the other hand, it is an expensive (for level 1) Ritual, which could reflect its rarity or how jealously the Vistani guard it. If his campaign does not have the Vistani or an equivalent people in it, then the ritual could very well have been developed by someone else, so it should be obtainable by some means.

The Ritual has been balanced for PC use, and there is no reason for your DM to forbid it entirely. If you want it, and he doesn't want you to simply buy it at the local grocer's, he should make it available to you in some other way (either as a scroll found during the course of an adventure, or a side quest). I do this quite a bit, even before Item Rarity was introduced into the rules, stores where you can buy magic items, scrolls and ritual components are rare.

While Dragon content is 4E content like everything else, a DM might still put restrictions on it, like they can with any material. I recommend initiating a dialogue (talking). Ask him if it would be possible for your character to gain the ritual through role playing plot related activities with Vistani (or his world's version of them). Because while DMs can make restrictions, the Players are part of the game too. If someone wants something, they should work together to come up with a solution.

Would granting you access to this ritual (and thus enabling you to rearrange healing surges around your party) make your group overpowered in any way? I'm totally unfamiliar with this ritual, so I am not fit to comment on whether it would be overpowered or not; I'm just suggesting that perhaps your group gaining this benefit would result in the game being a bit too easy (and therefore dull and uninteresting) for you and your party.

Perhaps your DM is worried that he'll have to rewrite many of his planned encounters to up the difficulty?

I think it would help you if you understood the *core* of his concern, not just the stated word. See if you can get him to tell you what he's *really* worried about. Maybe you'll find out that his concern is valid, and you and your group should forgo the ritual in order to enjoy the game more.

Or...maybe he's just being a jerk.

Apr 28, 2011 19:46:04 I think that ritual is awesome ... I like to flavor it as "Blood bonding" = I picture it involving the old cut your palm/spit and join hands visualization. Very fun.. I am thinking of a Dhampyr who might make it involve streamers of blood between the participants... cool stuff.
