The Gauntlgrym Gambit

by Daniel Marthaler

Whispered rumors and fenced artifacts lead the heroes through the trackless wilderness in search of the legendary lost dwarven realm of Gauntlgrym, where they face not only the Ashmadai cultists who uncovered a portion of the city but also the monstrous denizens of its lightless expanse and the strange oozes that threaten to subsume it entirely.

Talk about this article here.

I quite enjoyed this adventure. One Realms dive in a long time. It launches from Neverwinter and is providing some support to the Neverwinter Campaign Guide since it didn't get any Heroic  adventure for it. It offers a descent into the Lost City Gauntlgrym in the ancient Dwarven Kingdom of Delzoun in the Savage North, which is really my favorite place on Toril.

The maps are well done with many sink holes and plateform. My favorite is the one with a bridge shaped like a resting Dwarven warrior which is in fact a giant broken statue ! It offers challenging encounters and challenges and offer with clashes with beasties and wicked denizens from the underdark that can be very brutal. I love the Theme Tie In reference offerred. It end with an Aftermath of open possibilities where delvers could spend quite some times exploring all the side passages and unexplored chambers to deal with their guardians, traps and other horrors as well as their long forgotten treasures !

Merci

Cookie to Daniel Marthaler for this cool adventure
And Adam Paquette, Jim Nelson, Eric Belisle and Jaron Blando for the artwork and carthography.

Same author as Lord of the White Field, which earns an automatic thumbs up!

WOW!  Great adventure. More awesomeness from this writer. WotC, you should be immediately soliciting more adventures from Mr. Marthaler. Why this adventure has so few comments on here is a mystery. I think some people may have missed it because it was released right at the end of the month. If you havn't read this adventure yet, you really should because it is top notch stuff.

There are some really great encounters here that I'm sure would go done as some of the most memorable for many players. My favorites are "The Clanking Lift" and "The sea of slime". I love the hand drawn maps that go with both of these and plan on using them in a future adventure. The story is fun and I like the tie-ins to the Neverwinter campaign guide. Overall, a solid fun adventure with some very memorable encounters.

Finally, the new adventure format is really showcased by this style of adventure. Having seen a few in this style, I'm now a major fan and I hope WotC never looks back on the old style.
