Everyone here at some point or another has come across the edition wars right? Well now that the dust has settled I think it's all starting to peter out so everyone can breath a great sigh of relief right? Not me...........not at all. Hey call me crazy but I love reading everyone at each others throats defending their edition......its very entertaining.

Im an AD&D 2e player of 19 years but guess what? The thing about editon wars is everyone covers every aspect about what is so great about their "pet" edition and rips apart what they think is stupid about the other persons editon, that Ive actually learned a lot more about each system and Im gonna make the plunge and try 4e. You learn a hell of a lot more from editon wars than you learn from say a thread like "Help with magic item creation". We have one guy in our group that can only play every other week so I figure ill run 2 different edition games every other sunday. We play a gritty realistic game so 4e being called "Gamey" by so many people insulting it made me think.........we could use a "gamey" game to just have fun with. Its dumbed down? Even better, so my players should pick it up quick. We like hanging out so instead of playing Risk on our off week we will play 4e.

One more thing before I forget. I really can't stand the people that think it is worth their time to write during an edition war thread "Why dont you guys stop fighting and just play the edition you like". Shut up pleez!!! If you dont like a topic or thread .............DONT READ THE DAMN THING!! Edition war threads are sometimes funny and always informative............tell me why 2e sucks. Whats great about 3.0 and why does 3.5 blow. You love 4e, lets hear why. If 1e is broken let me know where before I find out for myself in game and its too late. So people pleez, Can't we all just fight?

P.S.- Ill start things off. Which edition is best and why does 3.5 suck and why are you a moron for playing it?

huff, kinda glad i found this forum. i REALLY want to get into d&d but am clueless thus far. obviously i need to start with a starter pack but i have concerns before i start playing. first one is, if there are so many editions out, in your exp, what are some of the pro's and cons? another is whether or not i can play with myself at times? when i do start will i need more than this starter pack? dude, i blow enough money on dumb ****, so i'm really trying to tread careful with this...

Let me just say this right away, the only books you really "need" in any edition are the 3 core books which are the DM's guide, players handbook and the monster manual. You can have a completely fufilling game with just these 3, anything else could be considered splat books (books that are not required). Ive played some 1e, little bit of 3.5 and AD&D 2e. All good systems, you cant really go wrong. That being said Id start with a book called "Dungeons and Dragons rules cyclopedia". It tells you how to play, has all the classes and rules for building castles, mass combat, all the spells and magic items, paths to immortality, the monster manual, basically everything you need all in 1 book. It doesnt have as many character options as the other editions but if you have never played you will not notice. Its on Ebay right now used for 43 bucks. Its ending in a few minutes but if you keep checking im sure you could probably get another one for cheaper with some persistance. I also just saw an AD&D players handbook for 3.99. My point is get it on ebay you will save money just dont get hosed on the shipping. Be patient.

TSR published some 1 player solo adventures for 1E and I actually saw 1 of them at my local hobbyshop a month ago so I know you can still get them with some searching. It was beat up but readable and only 5 bucks.

Im not really qualified to tell you the pro's and cons of each system as I have played 2e for most of the last 20 years. I hated 3.5 but Ive since rethought that because I love the idea of feats and I dont think I gave it a fair chance (3 sessions). Thats why I love edition wars, you end up hearing about all of it by people who have played a lot of different editions. I think im going for 4e as I am ready to try something different but thats just me. Hope this helps.
