End of the World - Tuanarath

I noticed some interesting information in the Dragon article on Tuanarath that gives some clues to the Epic ending of the adventure path, and thought we could chat about it.

So in that article, they set up that this takes place some 20 years after an adventure in Dungeon 100 - Lich Queen's Beloved, in which a group of PCs is tricked into killing the 1000 year-old leader of the Githyanki by a rebel, thereby removing the cap on Githyanki levels as well. It looks like an awesome plot. We have half-githyanki/half-dragons, and now Tiamat is involved. She has apparently rewritten her original deal with Gith which granted them access to the Red Dragons, as a result of the Lich Queen's death. She is now using the githyanki as slaves.

It looks like a showdown with Tiamat is coming - but likely a few exarchs along the way, including Gith. There is also the thought that the city is the husk of a dead god, and some connection to Nerull that could result in his return.

Did anyone else see any tidbits that they think are worth pointing out? Based on this, I have to assume that the Githyanki Incursion did occur 20 years ago, stopped by the PCs in LQB. I can add this info to the history checks when the Githyanki appear in my campaign (very soon), but it looks like the Lich Queen's death is still a secret, so don't give away the farm.

Jul 17, 2009 8:58:58 Bahamut most likely made an appearance in the Lost Mines module; he was previously described in Deities & Demigods as occasionally travelling in the form of an old hermit, surrounded by his seven great wyrm bodyguards disguised as canaries.

Jul 17, 2009 13:33:49 Perfect - yes....In Lost Mines though? I missed that reference. I am running Lost Mines now and don't want to miss a chance to bring Bahamut in. I was thinking that the Lost Mines are where the platinum for the sword was mined.

Good thought! Anything to make Lost Mines more relevant to the campaign is sorely needed. There still has been no info on where Amyria came from or why she was in the shape of a sword, right? I'd hate to throw that tidbit in there, and then in mid-Epic they reveal a whole origin story for her that is completely fundamental to the plot.

As I mentioned in another thread, I had the ceremonial sword immediately harden into a functional +2 bastard sword when handled by a follower of Bahamut at the end of RaR, so I've also been stewing over how to have the hermit interact with that character. Certainly he should express some interest or recognition, but I don't want to give the game away.

Jul 17, 2009 20:03:42 Also, re: Bahamut in Lost Mines, the hermit is referred to in the text as "The Birdman" in a sidebar on page 70, and I agree, he is almost certainly meant to be Bahamut. It's some pretty early fore-shadowing, given that it STILL has yet to be followed up on, but it does help to give this quest some purpose.

Jul 18, 2009 20:27:33 Cool - thanks for the pointer. I am skimming all the mods, but only reading details as they become necessary, and I hadn't gotten to the Birdman yet. I think he seemed inconsequential in a quick look. But no - he is clearly Bahamut. Good catch there. Definitely want to make that connection for later. I need to have a good character ready for him, something memorable.

Nice of those dragons to warn the party later on, isn't it?

Jul 21, 2009 9:07:56 Wow; good thing I read this thread. I was going to skip the Lost Mines module altogether and do a rewrite. If the Birdman character is that essential, I'll have to leave it in...

Jul 21, 2009 11:12:44 It is just a rumor so far... we've had some references to Tiamat and her interactions with the Githyanki following the death of the Githyanki leader, and there have been some paladins of Bahamut, and we think the Birdman was Bahamut, and that's about it.
