In the Character Builder tool there are Weapons Focus feats available to Essentials characters to gain a bonus in these three weapons. Is there a Weapons Proficiency for them? Could I even acquire one in the Essentials marketplace if I wanted too?

I am assuming there is some race/class/feat combination that activates these as a valid choice, but I haven't come across it.

You get proficiency in those weapons via multiclassing feats; Blowgun Training, Garrote Training, Whip Training.  They're in Dragon Magazine; how that interfaces with Essentials, I don't know.

Salla, I understand the basic principle, I am just not seeing those options when building an Essentials character in the Character Builder. I am assuming I am just missing something obvious.

The likely answer is that those feats are not available for Essentials-only characters.  Try using the Custom option and selecting an Essentials class from there.

To reiterate:

NEVER, EVER, EVER (seriously, NEVER EVER) USE THE "NEW" BUTTON!!!!

It will limit you to what is found in Heroes of the Fallen Lands and Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms and maybe 3 Dragon magazine articles published since September of 2010, AND NOTHING ELSE.

So, the not so obvious, but, sadly, very true thing that you have missed is that Whips, Blowguns and Garrotes are not in HotFL or HotFK, so you will never be able to use them with a character that was created after clicking the "NEW" button.

Always use "Custom," and join the movement to have the "New" button removed from the builder as it causes WAAAAAAAAAAAAY more problems than it could ever cure.

MalakLightfoot, A-Ha! So there's the answer. As a test I created a NEW Essentials character, saved it,
and then reopened the character but was still limited to the magic items and feats as originally offered
via the NEW button. I then used the CUSTOM button and Home Campaign, created an Essentials character and all of the feats and weapons I was questioning are indeed there.

Of course, of the 47 class choices none of them specified that they were Essentials only characters, so you absolutely have to know what you are looking for before you go in there. But that, like the elimination of the NEW button, is an argument for another day.

Thanks for the help!

Well, that's the trick, really. There really is no such thing as an "Essentials only" class. Most of the Essentials classes benefit greatly from options found in other sources, and many of the classses that fall outside of the "Essentials" definition can put "Essentials" options to very good use. For example, every Fighter build, except possibly a Fighter (Slayer), should seriously consider taking Glowering Threat, a Fighter (Knight) Utility power. It really is just that good.

Even Encounters isn't "Essentials only", but Essentials + whatever is the newest player crunch book. The current season of Encounters is Essentials + Heroes of the Elemental Chaos and the next season of Encounters will be Essentials + the Dungeon Survival Guide (Go Kobolds!).
